Music / Opera. Stevens Rise b . 1913
PUBLICITY PHOTOGRAPH
New York City: Metropolitan Opera Co. INSCRIBED by Ms Stevens. Faint dimple in lower left corner. Very Good. 9-7/8" x 8" <br/><br/>"One of the great voices of the Metropolitan Opera New York-born mezzo-soprano Rise Stevens made her debut with the company in 1939 as Octavian in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier". Her other notable roles in 21 years with the company included the two characterizations most associated with her the title role in Bizet's "Carmen" and Dalila in Saint-Saens's "Samson et Dalila." Furthermore Ms Stevens is known for literally saving the entire 1961 season. After the company had canceled its entire 1961-62 schedule due to stalled labor negotiations a persuasive telegram from Rise Stevens convinced President Kennedy to intervene and he ordered the Secretary of Labor to arbitrate the dispute. Just three weeks later the entire season was reinstated on schedule demonstrating notables such as President Kennedy were not immune to the entreaties of the Met's attractive reigning mezzo-soprano. A great beauty as well as a great singer she also enjoyed one of the more successful careers of the many opera singers who made films most notably in "The Chocolate Soldier" opposite Nelson Eddy and "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby & Barry Fitzgerald. She was also something of a fixture on early TV appearing frequently on such programs as "The Bell Telephone Hour" & "The Voice of Firestone" where she sang both operatic arias & popular songs. She also appeared on one of the first telecasts from the Met in 1954 singing her favored role of Carmen opposite one of her most frequent Don Joses Richard Tucker." IMDb. MUSIR IBRAHIM EDHEM PASHA, (1819-1893), (Turkish marshall, Ottoman statesman and Grand Vizier of Sultan Abdulhamid II).
[Business card of Ibrahim Edhem Pasha -Müsir-].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original business card. Slightly chipped left bottom corner. In Ottoman script. Ibrahim Edhem Pasha, (1819-1893) was an Ottoman statesman, who held the office of Grand Vizier in the beginning of Abdul Hamid II's reign between 5 February 1877 and 11 January 1878. He served numerous administrative positions in the Ottoman Empire including minister of foreign affairs in 1856, then ambassador to Berlin in 1876, and to Vienna from 1879 to 1882. He also served as a military engineer and as Minister of Interior from 1883 to 1885. In 1876-1877, he represented the Ottoman Government at the Constantinople Conference. Ibrahim Edhem Pasha was the father of Osman Hamdi Bey, a well-known archaeologist and painter, as well the founder of the Istanbul Archaeology Museum and the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Another son, Halil Edhem Eldem took up the archaeology museum after Osman Hamdi Bey's death and has been a deputy for ten years under the newly founded Turkish Republic. Yet another son, Ismail Galib Bey, is considered as the founder of numismatics as a scientific discipline in Turkey. Later generations of the family also produced illustrious names. The architect Sedat Hakki Eldem, a cousin, is one of the pillars of the search for modern architectural styles adopted by the Republic of Turkey (called the Republican style in the Turkish context) in its early years and which marks many important buildings dating from the period of the 1920s and the 1930s. A great-grandson, Burak Eldem, is a writer while another, Edhem Eldem, is a renowned historian. More names include Erol Eldem, Tiana Eldem, Levent Eldem and Ercan Eldem, an architect.
