Ballets Russes] Opera Privé de Paris1929 Premiere Saison ProgramProfusely illustrated 1929 program for the Opera Privé de Paris production of “Prince Igor” by Borodine. 9.5 x 12.5 inches. 28 pp. Nine tipped-in color plates, including a portrait of its star singer, Maria Kousnetzoff; and, by Konstantin Korovine, six character costumes and two stage sets. The color cover is by J. Bilibine. Also included are full-page portraits of Madame Alexandra Balachova and of baritone Michel Benois, as well as many smaller photographs of other participants such as orchestra director Emil Cooper and choreographer-dancer Michel Fokine (who, a few years later, developed the famous Ballet based on Prince Igor). Started after the death of Diaghilev in 1929, the Opéra Privé de Paris was another continuation of the Ballets Russes. Co-directed by Maria Kousnezoff-Massenet, they performed Russian operas and ballets in Paris, Barcelona and London in the late 1920s and 1930s.The painter Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939) began designing stage sets for the Mamontov opera house in 1885, and increasingly did work for the theatre, moving to the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg at the beginning of the century. In 1923 he moved to Paris and spent most of the rest of his life designing stage sets for major theatres around the world. The Russian artist, illustrator of books, set and costume designer Ivan Bilibin (1876-1942) did much work for the Ballets Russes. His work was strongly influenced by Russian folk and medieval art. Boris Bilinsky (1900-1948) was commissioned in 1927 to produce the graphic designs for the French release of Fritz Lang’s film Metropolis. A decorative border encases the title at the top and a dark illustration depicting a stage and packed seats is to the top right. The first play Agatha Christie's Ten Little Niggers is to take place on March 26th for one week no perfomance Good Friday and is accompanied by the subtitle "nine victims- and one unknown killer- marooned on a desert island.". The play was first published by Christie in 1939. The book was named after a popular nursery rhyme of the same name. The American edition was "Ten Little Indians". The name was later adapted to the last line of the rhyme "And Then There Were None". "The Happiest Days of Your Life" the second play on the broadside by John Dighton and produced by Leslie Phillips was to take place April 2nd for one week as a special Easter Holiday Attraction. It is described as "A wildly funny farce about a boys' school and a girls' school- on the same premise! The most hilarious evening of your life!". Fine. <br><br />The recto with: eight measures written and signed by the French composer Charles Lecocq from his wildly successful "La fille de Madame Angot" which when premiered in Paris in 1873 was performed for more than 400 nights consecutively. Inscribed to Ugalde and dated 20 May 1873; an unidentified inscription; a heartfelt inscription from Rossini's friend and biographer Alexis Azevedo dated 17 July 1870. <br><br />The verso with: a three-measure 1869 quotation by Fauré celebrated French baritone and composer creator of important roles by Massé Thomas Meyerbeer Verdi and others who has penned a selection from his own Sacred Song for Voice and Piano "Les Rameaux" with a trimmed albumen photograph of him affixed beneath; a heartfelt 1869 inscription by Capoul the great French tenor creator of Offenbach's Vert-Vert and Masse's Paul et Virginie who writes that he is "so happy of your return to us that I embrace you as strongly as I admire you"; an 1870 inscription from Dejazet important French actress who writes that her "voice remains always charming even when it is speaking it is your great heart which sings" and with a trimmed albumen photograph of her affixed beneath; with one additional unidentifed inscription lower left dated 1873. <br><br />Ugalde "studied in Paris with Cinti-Damoreau and made her début in 1848 at the Opéra-Comique as Angèle in Auber's Le domino noir a role created by her teacher. In 1851 she sang at Her Majesty's Theatre London as Delilah in Auber's L'enfant prodigue. In 1858 she sang Leonora Il trovatore at the Paris Opéra and was then engaged at the Théâtre Lyrique. Four leaves in one are torn with slight loss; one front wrapper is torn; three lack the rear wrapper and a further five lack both wrappers; overall they are in excellent condition. A later duplicate typescript index is bound in: contents include 'Lohengrin' 'Il Trovatore' thrice 'Aida' 'Norma' and 'Le Nozze di Figaro'. With the bookplate and signature of and bound by F.W. This ballet based on that of Marius Petipa and Serguei Khoudekov was choregraphed by Rudolf Noureev or Nureyev in 1992 and is the first three-act as opposed to four-act rendition. Although the plot synopsis one page is rendered in German and English as well as French the rest of the playbill is entirely in French. It's quite a long playbill 125 pages plus endmatter advertising and has photos from the production in both b&w and color.
