Lo stravagante" è un percorso leggero della penna in mezzo ai ricordi della vita dell'Artista, gli incubi, gli aneddoti e le curiosità, gli inattesi rivolgimenti, le inimmaginabili sorprese, tra i tonfi e i trionfi in società, le tante avventure amorose vissute audacemente nell'al di qua e i tanti divertenti incontri e ritrovamenti nell'al di là. Il tutto narrato con spensieratezza e creatività, alla maniera di un cahier d'esquisses, vale a dire un taccuino d'appunti stipato di musica, memorie, reminiscenze e souvenirs, assieme al Maestro con cura elaborato, mangiando, amando, cantando e digerendo perché: "Mangiare, amare, cantare e digerire sono i quattro atti di quell'opera comica che è la vita e che svanisce come la schiuma d'una bottiglia di champagne. Chi la lascia fuggire senza averne goduto è un pazzo", come costui ben predicava sulla terra.

br. Che cosa non è questo libro? Non è una recensione, con 109 anni di ritardo, del "Fantôme de l'Opéra" di Gaston Leroux. Siamo spiacenti, ma è tutt'altro. Che cosa è questo libro? Dopo più di settant'anni di didattica nell'ambito della drammaturgia musicale e di impegno professionale con ruoli decisivi al servizio del Teatro alla Scala, Quirino Principe vuole condividere con chi non tema di leggerlo una sua antica certezza, oggi ingigantita e travolgente: che musica da un lato, teatro dall'altro, siano due realtà miracolose che l'Occidente ha saputo conquistare per sé, al confronto con altre nobili e valorose ma diverse culture. Un prodigio della Natura, nato da energia cosmica, e un prodigio della Storia, ispirato da virtù la cui radice prima è nella forma simbolica di civiltà in cui l'Occidente deve riconoscersi, se vuole esistere. Anzi: se vuole essere. Il libro cerca una possibile definizione di che cosa sia veramente il Teatro d'Opera (il suo meraviglioso «fantasma»), e di come esso possa rivelarsi come strumento dell'antico «conosci te stesso», di misteriosa origine, e del pindarico «divieni ciò che sei». Sarebbe massima ragione di felicità, per l'autore, convincere il lettore che se perdiamo il Teatro d'Opera, se lasciamo che ci sfugga dalle mani, siamo perduti. Sì, certo, questo libro è anche un'arringa, un atto di accusa. Ma per svilupparlo, per sollevare il lettore al giusto grado d'indignazione e alla giusta temperatura dell'ira non più repressa, l'autore suggerisce anche qualche ascensione ad alta quota, di quelle che avvicinano alle costellazioni.
