Boldly signed "Francis Robinson". The top left corner of the letter is slightly creased. Near fine. <p>Robinson writes to Bruce Kellner of Hartwick College Oneonta NY arranging a time when they can meet at the Met. "It will be a pleasure to talk to you about Mr. Van Vechten. Saturday is actually a better day for me than Friday because Friday we have a dress rehearsal of ADRIANA LECOUVREUR." Kellner was a Van Vechten scholar the author of "Carl Van Vechten and the Irreverent Decades" 1968.<p>Francis Robinson 1910-1980 who was photographed by Carl Van Vechten was the longtime assistant manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. It opened on May 17 1792 under the name La Fenice - the phoenix. As optimistic a name it may have been it was to bode ill for the Gran Teatro. In the night from December 12 - 13 1836 the interior of the opera house was completely gutted by fire. In less than a year La Fenice had risen from the ashes once again to become a leading institution in the world of music for more than a century and a half. Then in 1996 during the nights of January 29-30 catastrophe struck once more and within a short time La Fenice was all but razed. This publication charts two centuries of musical history at the Gran Teatro La Fenice from the great operas of the nineteenth century to contemporary music and modern dance from Rossini and Verdi to Ligeti and Pina Bausch. It is the first complete chronicle of all the operas concerts and festivals held at the Gran Teatro and also includes a detailed architectural history with many illustrations plans sketches and period engravings. It pays homage not only to the past but above all to the spirit of hope infusing the current reconstruction on what is surely one of the world's most beautiful opera houses. Printed on heavy paper. The book and jacket are new but due to the weight the jacket has sustained a few tears. There is a small fold with two tiny tears at the bottom back; a 1" tear at the spine top and the corners are lightly worn. In a protective cover this book is over 5 1/2 lbs.; Folio - over 12 - 15" tall . Evergreen hardcover
