It opened on May 17 1792 under the name La Fenice - the phoenix. As optimistic a name it may have been it was to bode ill for the Gran Teatro. In the night from December 12 - 13 1836 the interior of the opera house was completely gutted by fire. In less than a year La Fenice had risen from the ashes once again to become a leading institution in the world of music for more than a century and a half. Then in 1996 during the nights of January 29-30 catastrophe struck once more and within a short time La Fenice was all but razed. This publication charts two centuries of musical history at the Gran Teatro La Fenice from the great operas of the nineteenth century to contemporary music and modern dance from Rossini and Verdi to Ligeti and Pina Bausch. It is the first complete chronicle of all the operas concerts and festivals held at the Gran Teatro and also includes a detailed architectural history with many illustrations plans sketches and period engravings. It pays homage not only to the past but above all to the spirit of hope infusing the current reconstruction on what is surely one of the world's most beautiful opera houses. Printed on heavy paper. Qualche normale segno d'uso e del tempo alla copertina, in particolare, piccoli, leggeri segni d'umido e, alla prima di copertina, firma d'appartenenza e data scritte da mano coeva; vignetta al frontespizio. Pochi, lievi aloni d'umido alle pagine, leggero segno di piegatura longitudinale, per il resto ben conservato. Musica del maestro Vincenzo Bellini. La première dell'opera era andata in scena al Teatro alla Scala di Milano il 14 febbraio 1829. Personaggi: Alaide (la Straniera): Annetta Finch Lohr; Il signore di Montolino: N. N.; Isoletta, di lui figlia: Adelaide Villani; Arturo, conte di Ravenstel: Leandro Valencia; Il barone di Valdeburgo: Paolo Barroilhet; Il priore degli Spedalieri: Giuseppe Soldini; Osburgo, confidente di Arturo: Domenico Saini; Cori e Comparse: Cavalieri, Gondolieri, e Pescatori, Cacciatori, Guardie, Vassalli di Montolino.
