‎Groupe d'acrobates pré-vaudevilliens fondé au début des années 1840, les Hanlon-Lees étaient des praticiens de renommée mondiale du culbutage, de la jonglerie et d'une forme ancienne de comédie à couper le souffle. La troupe était composée des six frères Hanlon et de leur mentor, le professeur acrobate établi John Lees. Ils ont fait des tournées aux États-Unis et en Europe, produisant des «pantomimes» construites avec des «intrigues» folkloriques et de contes de fées autour desquelles tisser leurs merveilles techniques et acrobatiques. Ils électrisèrent la France, apparaissant initialement à l'Exposition internationale de 1867. Lors de tournées ultérieures, ils apparurent au Théâtre du Châtelet, au Théâtre des Variétés et aux Folies Bergère, inspirant théâtralement de nombreux adeptes. Ce volume commence avec la troupe se remémorant leurs expériences au cours de leurs voyages dans le monde, tandis que la seconde moitié enregistre diverses performances de pantomime vues en France, décrivant la musique, les accessoires et la progression de l'action.‎

Writing to MP at the Evening News London. ‘There has sic been quite a few remarks passed by critics of the “paucity†of Acts in the Variety profession. My Act which comprises good clean comedy and expert musicianship is one of the most successful Acts from “an audience point of view†in the business to-day and obviously what audiences want.’ MP could ‘ascertain the truth’ of this statement by visiting the forthcoming show at Collins’ Musical Hall. ‎PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA PA. Very Good. 1970. On offer is an original huge archive of handwritten and typescript communication and orders sent to a bookseller for books related to the circus clowns performing animals and carnivals. Circa 1970s - 1980s this archive includes many items on circus or clown letterhead business cards from circus operators and performers and postal covers with stamps from all over the USA Canada UK and Australia. While some of the letters are lists of book orders relating to the circus others are correspondence directly from the circus performers themselves many contain illustrated circus advertising as well as autographs from performers and operators. There is a sensational mix of material here.Most of the letters are addressed to Frank Barry whose book selling business was located in Philadelphia. There are 230 individual letters/postal covers with most containing several pages of enclosures with an estimated 500 pages of circus material for the collector to sort through. All of the material is in very good to fine condition with most of the envelopes/covers opened with a letter opener neatly on one end.
