First edition of this exceedingly scarce promotional pamphlet for the hermaphrodite sideshow featuring “Aileen†who was born in California in 1907 raised as a girl until puberty when only one side developed a female breast and other side developed as man and appears to have dressed primarily as a man although on occasion as a woman for his/her amusement. Later she would often appear with another “hermaphrodite†in the Lauther sideshows who appeared under the name Claude. After World War II the Lauther b. 1888 sideshows would become the staple acts for the Cetlin-Wilson Circus whose winter quarters were in Petersburg VA. Generally the “hermaphrodites†were female impersonators often with deformed genitalia such as prolonged clitoris or misshapen penis creating the illusion of a double-sex and these acts proved notably popular and profitable. CIRCUS SUFFRAGE. TIEMANN Hermann Newell Photographer.
Excellent silver gelatin photograph of Madison Square Garden in New York City featuring the Barnum & Bailey Circus which presented their elaborate Cleopatra-themed show during their run in 1912. This was also the site of the circus suffrage event organized by the women performers of the Barnum & Bailey circus led by Jodie De Mott and Zella Florence.
New York: H.N. Tiemann Co. 4 East 30th St. March 1912. One silver gelatin photo. 7.5 x 8.5 in. w/ embossed photographer’s stamp at lower left corner pencil annotations on verso of photo 1 corner w/ very slight loss still VG image with bright strong contrast. This image depicts the famed Renaissance Revival structure based on the Moorish Giralda Tower in Spain at Fifth & Madison Ave. in March 1912. Designed by Stanford White for McKim Mead & White this historic venue included the largest amphitheater in America equipped with a tank for aquatic shows a rooftop theatre cabaret restaurant and concert hall. The Cleopatra spectacle featured 1500 performers including the African-American minstrel troop organized by James Wolfscale featuring his three sons and the rest of the musicians mounted on camels playing their instruments. The show which ran from March 23 - April 22 1912 is perhaps best remembered for the widely reported suffrage rally held by 75 women circus performers of the world’s first “Circus Suffrage Society†and notably snubbed by the socialite Suffrage Movement leaders including Harriet Stanton Blatch. Led by Josie De Mott a bareback trick rider acrobat Zella Florence and included women animal trainers wire walkers hand balancers dancers acrobats and the renowned female Hercules -- Katie Sandwina. This Madison Square Garden was demolished in 1924 after the New York Life Insurance Co. which held the mortgage built their landmark Cass Gilbert-designed New York Life Building and another Madison Square Garden venue was opened on 8th Ave. between 49th and 50th. Tall 8vo. 7.25 x 11.25 in. 24 pp unpaginated. thick cardstock w/ die-cut window slots for photos framed in green paper w/ 47 photos inserted sized from 3.25 x 4.75 in up to 4 x 5 in. a few mounted some w/ stamps on versos a few w/ pencil annotations some tipped-in a few mounted on sheets and inserted typed price list and ordering instructions on front pastedown listing many of the photos. Green linen white lettering stamped on front cover slightly shaken some rubbing edgewear still VG exemplar. Very rare photo sample catalogue assembled probably in the 1940s by Bob Parkinson noted circus collector and former director of the Circus World Museum Library and Research Center. The typed price list details the sets of images for sale such as the four photos from glass plate negatives of the Forepaugh Sells Bros. 1898 parade including images of steam calliope and 4 horse team bandwagon and 20 horse team elephant line-up followed by 2 blocks of close order units and more. In addition there are many images of 1908 and 1910 Ringling Bros. circus parades including views of the “Swan†Bandwagon and entire 24 horse team “Persia†tableau and 24 pony team side view “Egypt†tableau with the 16 camel team the entire elephant line-up riders and more. In addition there are added photos of wagons from the Al G. Barnes Circus Cole Bros. Circus later absorbed by Bailey and then Ringling Bros. as well as 101 Ranch Wild West Shows later circus parades in the 1920s the unloading of circus wagons off the Wisconsin Central Railroad flatbed cars loading docks and more. Parkinson explains that his sets for sale from $ 1.35 to $ 6.00 for all of them are taken directly from original glass plate negatives and that he is not charging much more than the printing costs and only trying to recoup his original considerable expense in purchasing the original negatives. Parkinson 1923-1991 began collecting as early as 1936 when he purchased his first Ringling-Barnum Bros. program and followed every circus show within striking distance of Decatur IL. After starting work as an insurance adjustor in 1946 he continued to chase buy & occasionally sell Circus related material assembling a massive collection of field show newspaper ads and was hired as the director of the Circus World Museum Library and Research Center in Baraboo WI from 1965 until his death. Outstanding archive of 291 original photographic negatives of S. Seline’s Troupe of Imperial Russian Kuban Cossacks trick riders and dancers who performed for the Al G. Barnes and Cole Bros. Circuses from the 1920s through the 1940s including an appearance at the 1939 World’s Fair.
Baldwin Park CA; Coal Bluff & Brazil IN: Seline Troupe ca. 1926-1965. Archive of 291 original film negatives w/ 151 in black & white postcard format 140 in black & white and some colour 120 126 and 127 film formats and all preserved in archival mylar film sleeves all including positive copy prints of all negatives all printed on Ilford photo paper stock a couple w/ double-exposure a few out of focus and some w/ minor damage still an excellent archive with bright strong contrast images. This exceptional archive of photographic negatives document the circus and trick riding act known as S. Seline’s Troupe of Imperial Russian Kuban Cossacks who performed for the Al G. Barnes Circus Ringling Bros. Cole Brothers and other touring groups. Cossacks had become popular attractions for Circuses Wild West Rodeos and trick riding shows in the 19th century and after the Russian Revolution large groups of Cossacks left the Soviet Union sometimes with dire results for relatives left behind. This Cossack diaspora introduced many of the trick riding techniques still used in rodeos and equestrian shows today as well as the art of Shashka or Cossack Saber fencing and dance. These extraordinary images focus primarily on the Troupe’s career with the Al G. Barnes Circus with photos of the troupe in full costume on horseback racing the horses demonstrating trick riding techniques circus posters for The Cossacks touring the world 1926-1927 with 101 Ranch Ringling Bros. & Barnes; riders in costume trick riding often in front of Barnes Circus wagons; riding under the big top elephants camels and zebras lined up; parading through an unnamed town; performing at the 1939 New York World’s Fair; as well as showing off their native Cossack dances. Many of the images of trick riding training and bit top tents show the Al G. Barnes winter quarters in the San Gabriel Valley between Baldwin Park and El Monte with aerial views of the Big Tops set up distant views of the surrounding mountains as well as additional images of the Seline Troupe automobiles trucks and transport trailers. Many of the images focus on the trick riding and equestrian abilities of Valerie Seline often showing her in variations of the several Kuban Cossack traditional dress costumes -- often required by circus contracts to be worn all the time; Valerie on a variety of horses holding riding crop rearing horses kneeling horses along with an image of her atop Steve Seline and fellow rider at the 1939 World’s Fair; as well as her clowning around with a camel and together with her “husband†Steve in front of their Ford touring sedan fitted with Seline Troupe signage on the spare wheel and in street clothes. Many of the later photos show Valerie astride her horse in front of the Seline barn in the 1960s together with images of an unidentified family friend wearing and receiving Seline’s Cossack uniforms costumes swords saddles and regalia. Seline 1900-1990 was a Zaporozhian Kuban Cossack from the Ukraine who served as a Captain protecting the Tsar until his assassination fought with the White Russians during the Russian Revolution and later escaped to France. After the defeat of the White Russian forces in 1920 France recruited Seline and thousands of other Cossacks to fight in North Africa with the French Foreign Legion. He was wounded went back to Paris and immigrated to the United States on the SS France arriving in May 1926. He began performing with Veliko Kvitaishvili in a Cossack circus troupe with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show appearing on their 1927 roster before it folded. A few of the images show Veliko Kvitaishvili and Barbale Imnadze one of the first female riders of the Cossack-style riding troupe for Ringling Bros. Seline then performed in the 1928 John Gilbert silent film The Cossacks and by 1929 or so had formed his own Troupe which performed for Ringling Bros. and Al G. Barnes and then later based out of Indiana he performed with the Cole Brothers Circus buying his own farm after retiring in 1948 near Coal Bluff IN. Wife Valerie Evelyn Price Seline 1897-1967 was apparently a fascinating woman although a native born Indiana American she eventually became an accomplished Cossack-style horsewoman and trick rider. She married for the first time in 1919 then again in 1920 followed in 1921 by marriage to Harry Piper who died in a Circus trucka accident in 1924. She is then listed as Seline’s wife for a decade in assorted phone books including Baldwin Park CA Winter quarters for Al G. Barnes but “officially†marries Stiphen Steve Seline in 1942. A few years after her death Steve Seline sold the farm near Coal Bluff and moved to Brazil IN where he remained until his death. Hand-calligraphed Certificate of Appreciation to a Circus Orchestra Director
Petrograd 1923. Very good. Single sheet of heavy wove paper 13 by 18 inches with blue red green and gold calligraphy congratulating the circus orchestral director on twenty years of service. Addressed to Dear Colleague Stanislav Martinovich Novitsky from the Guild Collective of Circus Workers and signed by what appears to be all of the performers and workers of the circus. The St. Petersburg Circus was founded by an Italian immigrant Gaetano Cinzelli Chinzelli in 1877. Even though Cinzelli died in 1881 his family continued to manage the circus until the October Revolution of 1917. It is still performing today. We are unable to decipher the names of the performers except for one which appears on the left margin near the bottom: G. Chinzelli probably a grandson possibly the son of the founder. There are three horizontal folds in the certificate a little roughness around the edges and some light soil and offsetting from the gold but this is a very good example of post-Revolutionary Cyrillic calligraphy. Original carte-de-visite photograph of Charles Sherwood Stratton better known by his stage name "General Tom Thumb" a dwarf who achieved great fame as a performer under circus pioneer P. T. Barnum here photographed with his wife Lavinia Warren AUTOGRAPHED in Stratton's handwriting on verso <i>"Genl Tom Thumb & Mrs Tom Thumb - 1863 August"</i>. The couple were married in February 1863 for which it is said President Lincoln hosted them with a reception at the White House. <br /><p>Born in Bridgeport 1838 to parents who were of medium height Charles was a relatively large baby weighing 9 pounds 8 ounces 4.3 kg at birth. He developed and grew normally for the first six months of his life at which point he was 25 inches 64 cm tall and weighed 15 pounds 6.8 kg. Then he suddenly stopped growing. By late 1842 4 years old Stratton had grown only one inch additional though his body was proportionate and functional. The showman Phineas T. Barnum heard about Stratton and after making arrangements with his parents taught the boy how to sing dance mime and impersonate famous people. He toured America and Europe in 1845 during which time his performances marked a turning point in the history of freak show entertainment. Prior to Stratton's debut the presentation of "human curiosities" for the purpose of entertainment was deemed dishonorable and seen as an unpleasing carnival attraction. However after viewers were introduced to Stratton and performances he was able to change the perception people held toward freak shows. Stratton's lively entertainments made these types of carnival shows one of the most favored forms of theatre in the United States.</p><p>His marriage to Lavinia Warren also a little person became front-page news. The wedding took place at Grace Episcopal Church and the wedding reception was held at New York City's Metropolitan Hotel. The couple stood atop a grand piano at the reception to greet some 10000 guests. Rare to find a vintage picture of the couple dated and inscribed so early in their marriage.<br /></p>

Russian text only. Quite rare glimpse of a nomadic circus's construction and layout for its tour of the provinces during this sluggish period in Soviet history.
