American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. He completed the 2002 trip in 13 days 8 hours and 33 minutes and set records for both the Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon and Fastest Balloon Flight Around the World. Fosset was also one of sailing's most prolific distance record holders set the Absolute World Speed Record for airships with a Zeppelin NT in 2004. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including aviation's highest award the Gold Medal of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale FAI which he was awarded in 2002. Marbled paper over boards backed in red sheep gilt-stamped lettering in spine compartments; 311 x 230 mm; contains 70 double-page pen-and-ink drawings open they measure 311 x 445 mm some enhanced with ink wash or watercolor each with the artist's name and the professor's signatures 4 signatures in all. Boards and spine rubbed and scuffed; top corner of front board lacking. Contents are very near fine -- just some light foxing and a few small spots of soiling. <br/><br/>Highly skilled technical drawings by Michel Clement a student at the �cole Imp�riale d'Arts et M�tiers d'Aix. The period of training was set at three years with the first year devoted to arithmetic geometry and drawing; the second year to descriptive geometry trigonometry and mechanical drawing of both stationary and moving parts; and the third year to industrial mechanics and advanced drafting techniques. This album affords a fascinating glimpse into the type and extent of the skills required of graduates of French technical schools in the mid-19th century. With a series of 44 gouache drawings on laid paper each showing a single carnation on a black flower-shaped background in three series designated with letters and numbers. Mid-19th-century half tanned sheepskin.
A-G I-XX 1-17 ll.A curious set of carnation drawings with each flower about 2½ to 3½ cm wide and 5 to 6½ cm tall and shown on a black flower-shaped background 6 to 10 petals nearly all with serrated edges probably intended to reflect the carnation form. Each carnation is drawn on the recto of a single leaf with a roman capital letter or roman or arabic numeral at the at the head and an indication of the colour category at the foot both lettered in a style similar to late 18th-century roman printing types. They are arranged in three categories: 7 "uni color" A-G 20 "bi color" I-XX and 17 "tri color" 1-17. The book may have served as a practical collector's guide.The drawings are uniform in style and drawn on a single paper stock watermarked: fleur-de-lis on a crowned shield above "4" "WR" and "C & I Honig". We date the drawings ca. 1790 based primarily on the style of the lettering and numbers in the drawings and partly on the style of the watermark. The paper was certainly made in North Holland and the marbled paper used for the later binding is most common in Germany but the labels "uni color" etc. are in English so it remains unclear where the drawings were made.In very good condition. The marbled paper of the binding is rubbed but the binding is otherwise very good. A series of 44 colour gouache drawings of carnations. unknown

Aix-en-Provence probably 1857-1860. Hardcover. Near Fine. Marbled paper over boards backed in red sheep gilt-stamped lettering in spine compartments; 311 x 230 mm; contains 70 double-page pen-and-ink drawings open they measure 311 x 445 mm some enhanced with ink wash or watercolor each with the artist's name and the professor's signatures 4 signatures in all. Boards and spine rubbed and scuffed; top corner of front board lacking. Contents are very near fine -- just some light foxing and a few small spots of soiling. <br/><br/>Highly skilled technical drawings by Michel Clement a student at the École Impériale d'Arts et Métiers d'Aix. The period of training was set at three years with the first year devoted to arithmetic geometry and drawing; the second year to descriptive geometry trigonometry and mechanical drawing of both stationary and moving parts; and the third year to industrial mechanics and advanced drafting techniques. This album affords a fascinating glimpse into the type and extent of the skills required of graduates of French technical schools in the mid-19th century. The course in design cours de dessins is structured and presented here in 4 sections: Troisieme division premiere annee; deuxieme division these drawings dated 1858-1859; deuxieme annee; and premiere division.
