En introduction, narration de leur étonnant périple, par Jonathan STONE, ami de l'artiste: destinés à être publiés avec un texte d'Eugenio d'Ors, ils furent "perdus" pendant la guerre, le livre ne fut jamais publié, et l'artiste ne put les retrouver qu'en 1965; texte traduit par Denise et Robert MARRAST. Exemplaire bien complet de sa jaquette.‎

‎Friedemann von Stockhausen studierte zunächst in Köln Kunstgeschichte, Ethnologie und Soziologie, bevor er dann in London an der Slade School mit dem Kunststudium begann. Und vielleicht ist ja das erste Interesse für diese Wissenschaften, speziell die Ethnologie, schon ein Hinweis auf das, was das Besondere auch an seiner Kunst geworden ist. Der berühmte belgische Anthropologe Claude Levi-Strauss hat gesagt, die Ethnologie sei für die Sozialwissenschaften ungefähr das, was die Astronomie für die Physik in ihren Anfängen gewesen sei und schloss daraus: "Die Gesellschaften, die wir untersuchen, sind gleichsam räumlich und zeitlich sehr weit von uns entfernte Gegenstände. Daher können wir nur ihre Haupteigenschaften erkennen. Je mehr wir Gesellschaften auf diese Weise von weitem untersuchen, desto besser werden wir, glaube ich, bestimmte Grundmerkmale der menschlichen Gesellschaft überhaupt ausmachen können." ‎Stohl, der seine Ausbildung an der Wiener Kunstakademie absolvierte, war gerade in den 50er und 60er Jahren als Porträtmaler geschätzt und erhielt insbesondere vom Adel und höfischen Kreisen zahlreiche Porträtaufträge. Eine Romreise brachte ihm die Bekanntschaft der russischen Großfürstin Maria Nicolajewna, die seine Berufung als Hofmaler nach St. Petersburg veranlaßte. Im Auftrag des russischen Hofes fertigte er über 800 Kopien in Aquarell nach Gemälden Alter Meister an. Rudolf Lehmann (1819 Ottensen b. Hamburg - Bournemede bei Bushe/England 1905) lebte 1835-1837 in Paris und besuchte die École des Beaux-Arts. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus Frankreich lebte er zunächst in München, wo er 1838/39 Schüler von P. von Cornelius (1783-1867) und W. von Kaulbach (1805-1874) war. 1838 reiste er nach Rom und blieb dort ansässig bis 1846. 1850 siedelte er nach London um. Erneute Aufenthalte in Rom sind für die Jahre 1850, 1855, 1863 und 1864 zu belegen. Lehmanns künstlerischer Schwerpunkt lag auf Genrethemen, Schilderungen vom täglichen Leben in Rom und seiner Umgebung, aber auch auf der Porträtmalerei, die ihm große Bekanntheit einbrachte.‎
