‎BELLE ÉDITION ILLUSTRÉE de ce texte dont l'édition originale a paru en 1908. Elle contient un PORTRAIT de l'auteur en couverture, repris en frontispice, une vignette de titre, 12 PLANCHES hors-texte en deux états, et 12 têtes de chapitre et culs-de-lampe d'Auguste BROUET. Tirage limité à 162 EXEMPLAIRES, celui-ci un des 110 numérotés sur vélin blanc d'Arches (n°74). Exemplaire enrichi d'un MAGNIFIQUE DESSIN ORIGINAL à l'encre noire et à l'aquarelle, à pleine page, signé par Auguste Brouet. Un petit MOT AUTOGRAPHE signé par l'auteur, daté du « 4 mars 1919 » et adressé à l'éditeur Van Bever, a été contrecollé sur le second feuillet blanc. Auguste BROUET (1872-1841) est un graveur peu connu du grand public mais très recherché par les amateurs, et dont Gustave Geffroy disait qu'il était «illustre dans la pénombre», expression qui mettait l'accent, en outre, sur ce clair obscur qu'il pratiquait selon la leçon de Rembrandt. ‎14 Briefe an seinen Malerfreund Ernst Henseler (1852-1940) in Berlin aus den Jahren 1873 bis 1879 aus Hamburg, Düsseldorf und Eisenach. Versehen mit zahlreichen Illustrationen.‎

‎o.J. Feder in Grau oder Braun, auf Bütten oder Velin, sämtlich bezeichnet signiert und datiert. Ein 3seitiger mit besonders reizvollen Illustrationen geschmückter Brief ist mit ?St. Gehrts? unterschrieben und datiert ?Bergedorf. d. 10ten Sptbr. 1873.? Bei dem Schreiber handelt es sich hier vermutlich um den jüngeren Bruder von Carl Gehrts, Johannes Gehrts (1855-1921), der ebenfalls Maler war und erst 1873 von Hamburg nach Weimar wechselte. Bergedorf liegt in der Nähe von Hamburg.‎

‎Nach einem Besuch der Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg ging Gehrts 1871 nach Weimar und studierte an der Kunstschule bei K. Gussow (1843-1907) und A. Baur (1835-1906). Diesem folgte er 1876 nach Düsseldorf, 1889 ist eine Studienreise nach Italien und Griechenland belegt. Er war vielseitig begabt und in seiner dekorativen Manier den Zeitstil treffend, war er ein begehrter Künstler, der mit Aufträgen überhäuft wurde. Gehrts und Henseler hatten sich in Weimar an der 1871 gegründeten Kunstschule kennengelernt.‎

‎Ponte Nomentano in der Römischen Campagna mit Staffagen links auf dem Weg.‎

‎o.J. Bleistift und Pinsel in Dunkelbraun, auf cremefarbenem Velin. Ca. 15,5:25 cm. Verso zwei Entwurfskizzen südlicher Landschaften, rechts unten datiert ?9/5 66.?. Am Oberrand auf Untersatz montiert. Provenienz: Sammlung Joseph Heilmair (1843-1923). Rechts und unten ungleich beschnitten.‎

‎Die frei und flott gemalte Entwurfzeichnung stammt sicher aus einem Skizzenbuch. In der Städtischen Galerie Würzburg befindet sich eine Bleistiftzeichnung von 1866, die ebenfalls den Ponte Nomentano und die Römische Campagna zeigt, nur vom näheren Standpunkt aus (vgl. Ausst. Katalog: August Wilhelm Geist (1835-1868), Städtische Galerie Würzburg, Würzburg 1985, Abb. 38, S. 52 und S. 67). Aus einer Künstlerfamilie stammend, nahm Geist zunächst Unterricht bei seinem Vater, dem Würzburger Maler A. Geist (1803-1860). 1848-1850 setzte er an der Städtischen Gewerbeschule und 1850-1853 am Polytechnischen Zentralverein seine Ausbildung fort und beendete sie 1853 in München bei dem Landschaftsmaler F. Bamberger (1814-1873). 1854 unternahm er zum Landschaftsstudium eine Rhönreise, da er vom Würzburger Polytechnischen Verein den Auftrag erhalten hatte, Landschaftsveduten aus der Gegend anzufertigen. 1855 kehrte er nach München zurück. Es folgten Motive aus der fränkischen Schweiz und vom Starnberger See. Starken Einfluß übte die Malerei J.W. Schirmers (1807-1863) auf ihn aus, dessen Werke er 1859 in Karlsruhe studierte. 1861 unternahm er eine Rheinreise. In dieser Zeit schloß er Freundschaft mit H. von Marées (1837-1887), den er 1861 auf dem Weg nach Köln und Antwerpen in Koblenz besuchte und mit dem er die Reise nach Köln fortsetzte. Eine schwere Erkrankung brachte 1864/1865 eine Reise nach Reichenhall. Obwohl der Aufenthalt keine wirkliche Besserung bewirkt hatte, ging er im darauffolgenden Jahr nach Rom. Dort unterhielt er gemeinsam mit F. Preller d.J. (1838-1901) ein Atelier. 1867 kehrte er nach München zurück. Geist zählt sicher zu den bedeutendsten Landschaftsmalern Mainfrankens, wenn auch sein früher Tod im Alter von 33 Jahren als Folge einer wohl langjährigen Tuberkulose die vielversprechende Malerlaufbahn jäh beendete.‎

‎Die Malerin und Graphikerin studierte ab 1919 an der Karlsruher Kunstakademie. 1932 heiratete sie den Arzt und Avantgarde-Sammler Albert Rohrbach, dem sie nach Ludwigshafen folgte. Hier trat sie in Kontakt mit K. Schwitters (1887-1948) und H. Arp (1886-1966). Während der nationalsozialistischen Zeit versteckte und rettete sie gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann zahlreiche Werke der als ?entartet? diffamierten Avantgardekünstler. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes 1956 siedelte sie nach Italien um, ab 1960 lebte sie auf Sizilien, 1970 kehrte sie nach Ludwigshafen zurück. 1958 schuf sie einen Zyklus von großformatigen Gemälden zum Wiederaufbau der Stadt Ludwigshafen. Ihre Hauptthemen waren Landschaften, Bildnisse und Stilleben.‎
