Auf den Rückseiten der Zeichnungen befinden sich jeweils weitere, jedoch sehr flüchtige Skizzen. Zu drei Seiten hin - rechts, links und unten - ist das Papier vergilbt. Mit dem oberen Rand waren die Blätter in das Skizzenbuch geheftet.

Liebling found much to admire in the Windy City's people and culture�its colorful language its political sophistication its sense of its own history and specialness but Liebling offended that city's image of itself when he discussed its entertainments its built landscapes and its mental isolation from the world's affairs. Liebling a writer and editor for the New Yorker lived in Chicago for nearly a year. While he found a home among its colorful inhabitants he couldn't help comparing Chicago with some other cities he had seen and loved notably Paris London and especially New York. His magazine columns brought down on him a storm of protests and denials from Chicago's defenders and he gently and humorously answers their charges and acknowledges his errors in a foreword written especially for the book edition. Liebling describes the restaurants saloons and striptease joints; the newspapers cocktail parties and political wards; the university; and the defining event in Chicago's mythic past the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. Illustrated by Steinberg Chicago is a loving if chiding portrait of a great American metropolis. A. J. Liebling 1904-63 was a longtime contributor and columnist for the New Yorker. He wrote The Sweet Science and nineteen other books of nonfiction including Mollie and Other War Pieces also available in a Bison Books edition. Listen! the Wind INSCRIBED - Possible Association Copy
New York: Harcourt Brace and Co. 1938. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. Inscribed by Authors. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall. Red cloth spine panel lettered and front cover airplane device in gilt. Text block edges a bit dulled by age otherwise essentially as issued though lacking dust jacket. Stated first edition. xii275 pp. illus. w/ maps. Signed on half-title "For The Morgans / Anne" and while the signature bears a passing resemblance to that of Anne Morrow Lindbergh who frequently inscribed copies to personal friends simply as "Anne" we have doubts that this example is genuine. More often than not Listen! the Wind was inscribed by both Lindberghs given that Charles executed the map illustrations and this example is written on a slant rather than the author's typical horizontal inscription. However the inscription is intriguing insofar as it is "For the Morgans" which would most likely be Anne's sister Constance and her husband Aubrey Morgan who had married in 1937 the year before publication three years after the death of Aubrey's first wife Elisabeth who was also Anne and Con's older sister.
