Claudine Fran�oise Mignot commonly called Marie 20 January 1624 - 30 November 1711 French adventuress was born near Grenoble at Meylan. At the age of sixteen she attracted the notice of the secretary of Pierre des Portes d'Amblerieux treasurer of the province of Dauphin� and Amblerieux promised to promote their marriage. He married the girl himself however and left her his fortune. His will was disputed by his family and Claudine went to Paris in 1653 to secure its fulfilment. She sought the protection of Fran�ois de l'H�pital marshal of France then a man of seventy-five. He married her within a week of their first meeting and after seven years of marriage died leaving her part of his estate. They had one son c. 1654 - c. 1657. By a third and morganatic marriage in 1672 with John Casimir ex-king of Poland a few weeks before his death she received a third fortune. Immediately on her marriage with Amblerieux she had begun to educate herself and her wealth and talents assured her a welcome in Paris. They had one daughter Marie Catherine 1670 - after 1672. She retired in her old age to a Carmelite convent in the city where she died on 30 November 1711. Her history very much modified was the subject of a play by Bayard and Paul Duport Marie Mignot 1829. Princess Maria Teresa of Savoy-Carignan Marie Th�r�se 8 September 1749 - 3 September 1792 was a member of a cadet branch of the House of Savoy. She was married at the age of 17 to Louis Alexandre de Bourbon-Penthi�vre Prince de Lamballe the heir to the greatest fortune in France. After her marriage which lasted a year she went to court and became the confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette. She was killed in the massacres of September 1792 during the French Revolution. Marie Th�r�se was born in Turin. Her father was Louis Victor Prince of Carignano a maternal grandson of Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia and his mistress Jeanne d'Albert de Luynes. Her mother Landgravine Christine of Hesse-Rheinfels-Rotenburg was the daughter of Ernest Leopold Landgrave of Hesse-Rotenburg. Her aunts included Polyxena of Hesse-Rheinfels-Rotenburg the wife of Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia Victor Amadeus III was her first cousin and Caroline Princess of Cond� and wife of Louis Henri Duke of Bourbon. Louis Joseph Prince of Cond� was another first cousin who was at the French court. On 31 January 1767 she married by proxy Louis Alexandre de Bourbon-Penthi�vre prince de Lamballe grandson of Louis XIV's legitimised son Louis Alexandre de Bourbon comte de Toulouse and the only surviving son of Louis de Bourbon-Toulouse Duke of Penthi�vre who had arranged the marriage. In 1768 at the age of nineteen Marie Th�r�se became a widow when her husband died of a venereal diseasecitation needed at the Ch�teau de Louveciennes. She inherited her husband's considerable fortune making her wealthy in her own right. She lived at the H�tel de Toulouse in Paris and at the Ch�teau de Rambouillet. On 4 January 1769 there was an announcement of the marriage of Marie Th�r�se's sister-in-law Mademoiselle de Penthi�vre heiress to the greatest fortune in France to the young Philippe d'Orl�ans duc de Chartres an old friend of the late prince de Lamballe. The princesse de Lamballe was present at every ceremony and the new Dauphine to whom she was presented was charmed with her and overwhelmed her with attentions which the spectators did not fail to notice. More than one saw even then the dawn of an intimacy which later was to give so much trouble to the two friends. The "Gazette de France" mentions Madame de Lamballe's presence in the chapel at high mass on Holy Thursday at which the king was present accompanied by the royal family the Dukes of Bourbon and Penthi�vre. In May she went to Fontainebleau and was there presented by the king to her cousin the future Countess of Provence attending the supper after. She was present at the birth of the future Louis-Philippe of France in Paris in October 1773. In September following the accession of her husband to the throne in May 1774 Queen Marie Antoinette appointed Marie Th�r�se "Superintendent of the Queen's Household" the highest rank possible for a lady-in-waiting at Versailles. Her pre-eminence in courtly high society would eventually be eclipsed by that of Yolande de Polastron duchesse de Polignac who arrived at Versailles in 1775. Marie Th�r�se was by nature reserved and there was never any gossip about her private life. However in popular anti-monarchist propaganda of the time she was regularly portrayed in pornographic pamphlets showing her as the queen's lesbian lover to undermine the public image of the monarchy. Marie Antoinette; baptised Maria Antonia Josepha or Josephina Johanna; 2 November 1755 - 16 October 1793 born an Archduchess of Austria was Dauphine of France from 1770 to 1774 and Queen of France and Navarre from 1774 to 1792. She was the fifteenth and penultimate child of Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I. In April 1770 upon her marriage to Louis-Auguste Dauphin of France she became Dauphine of France. She assumed the title Queen of France and of Navarre when her husband ascended the throne as Louis XVI upon the death of his grandfather Louis XV in May 1774. After seven years of marriage she gave birth to a daughter Marie-Th�r�se Charlotte the first of her four children. Initially charmed by her personality and beauty the French people eventually came to dislike her accusing "L'Autrichienne" which literally means the Austrian woman but also suggests the French word "chienne" meaning bitch of being profligate promiscuous and of harbouring sympathies for France's enemies particularly Austria her country of origin. The Diamond Necklace incident damaged her reputation further although she was completely innocent in this affair. She later became known as Madame D�ficit because France's financial crisis was blamed on her lavish spending. The royal family's flight to Varennes had disastrous effects on French popular opinion: Louis XVI was deposed and the monarchy abolished on 21 September 1792; the royal family was subsequently imprisoned at the Temple Prison. Eight months after her husband's execution Marie Antoinette was herself tried convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal of treason to the principles of the revolution and executed by guillotine on 16 October 1793. Long after her death Marie Antoinette is often considered to be a part of popular culture and a major historical figure being the subject of several books films and other forms of media. Some academics and scholars have deemed her frivolous and superficial and have attributed the start of the French Revolution to her; however others have claimed that she was treated unjustly and that views of her should be more sympathetic. Fran�ois-Ren� vicomte de Chateaubriand; 4 September 1768 - 4 July 1848 was a French writer politician diplomat and historian. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition and in an age when a significant part of the intelligentsia was turning against the Church authored the G�nie du christianisme in defence of the Catholic faith. It is his autobiography M�moires d'outre-tombe "Memoirs from Beyond the Grave'" published posthumously 1848-1850 however that is nowadays generally considered his most accomplished work. Born in Saint-Malo the last of ten children Chateaubriand grew up in his family's castle in Combourg Brittany. His father Ren� de Chateaubriand 1718-86 was a former sea captain turned ship owner and slave trader. His mother's maiden name was Apolline de Bed�e. Chateaubriand's father was a morose uncommunicative man and the young Chateaubriand grew up in an atmosphere of gloomy solitude only broken by long walks in the Breton countryside and an intense friendship with his sister Lucile. Chateaubriand was educated in Dol Rennes and Dinan. For a time he could not make up his mind whether he wanted to be a naval officer or a priest but at the age of seventeen he decided on a military career and gained a commission as a second lieutenant in the French Army based at Navarre. Within two years he had been promoted to the rank of captain. He visited Paris in 1788 where he made the acquaintance of Jean-Fran�ois de La Harpe Andr� Ch�nier Louis-Marcelin de Fontanes and other leading writers of the time. When the French Revolution broke out Chateaubriand was initially sympathetic but as events in Paris became more violent he decided to journey to North America in 1791. This experience would provide the setting for his exotic novels Les Natchez written between 1793 and 1799 but published only in 1826 Atala 1801 and Ren� 1802. His vivid captivating descriptions of nature in the sparsely settled American Deep South were written in a style that was very innovative for the time and spearheaded what would later become the Romantic movement in France. Later scholarship has cast doubt on Chateaubriand's claim that he had been granted an interview with George Washington or whether he actually lived for a time with the Native Americans he wrote about. Chateaubriand returned to France in 1792 and subsequently joined the army of Royalist �migr�s in Coblenz under the leadership of Louis Joseph de Bourbon Prince de Cond�. Under strong pressure from his family he married a young aristocratic woman also from Saint-Malo whom he had never previously met C�leste Buisson de la Vigne. In later life Chateaubriand would be notoriously unfaithful to her having a series of love affairs. His military career came to an end when he was wounded at the siege of Thionville a major clash between Royalist troops and the French Revolutionary Army. Half-dead he was taken to Jersey and exile in England leaving his wife behind. Chateaubriand spent most of his exile in extreme poverty in London scraping a living offering French lessons and doing translation work but a stay in Suffolk was more idyllic. Here Chateaubriand fell in love with a young English woman Charlotte Ives but the romance ended when he was forced to reveal he was already married. During his time in Britain Chateaubriand also became familiar with English literature. This reading particularly of John Milton's Paradise Lost which he later translated into French prose would have a deep influence on his own literary work. His exile forced Chateaubriand to examine the causes of the French Revolution which had cost the lives of many of his family and friends; these reflections inspired his first work Essai sur les R�volutions 1797. An attempt in 18th Century style to explain the French Revolution it predated his subsequent romantic style of writing and was largely ignored. A major turning point in Chateaubriand's life was his conversion back to the Catholic faith of his childhood around 1798. KEYWORDS:france/photo unknown
