The Arcana collection : exceptional illuminated manuscripts and incunabula part I. Christie's auction catalogue sale date: 7 July 2010
Christie's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 7th July 2010. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 30 cm. 144 pp ills some colour. 48 lots. From the introduction: "The Arcana collection is characterised by the exceptional quality of its copies. Here is a 13th-century Bible; not a typical example but arguably the most richly illuminated copy in private hands. Here are numerous Books of Hours; not routine versions of what was after all the most popular text of the Middle Ages but books illuminated by the best artists of their day such as Simon Bening and commissioned for Francois I King of France Anne of Brittany Queen to two Kings of France and other royal and noble patrons. Even a printed Book of Hours is exceptional in having been illuminated for an Italian of Magna Graeca and later presented to Caroline Buonaparte Queen of Naples and sister of Napoleon. Here is Jerome's Letters; an important edition in itself the Arcana copy is printed on vellum fully illuminated and decorated by Mainz artists its contemporary binding in exceptional condition. Very Good. Christie's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 7th July 2010 unknown
