‎Gutes Exemplar; Einband stw. leicht berieben. - Englisch. - The Chinese works of art in the collection of Walter and Phyllis Shorenstein are spectacular in their beauty, their technical excellence and their historical importance. They include examples of Chinese glass, imperial porcelain and jade of particular distinction. The Shorenstein's impressively comprehensive collection of glass is one of the most admired and important in America. ? One of the beneficiaries of their financial and personal support was the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Phyllis Shorenstein was one of the founders of the museum, which opened in Golden Gate Park in 1966, serving as a board member for many years, and being a commissioner right up to the time of her death m 1994. Over a 20-year period the Shorenstein family donated many fine examples of art from China,Japan, Korea, India, and other Asian countries, to the museum. In recognition of all the Shorensteins had done for the Asian Art Museum, m May 1994 one of its galleries was named in honour of the family ? Phyllis Shorenstein was a passionate collector of Chinese glass, and amassed a superb collection, which provides a spectacular visual history of Chinese glass from the Han dynasty to the Qing dynasty. The collection includes some very-interesting early pieces of Chinese glass, including a Han dynasty translucent aqua glass cup (lot 2902), which represents a rare early Chinese example ot blown glass. However, it was the glass from the Qing dynasty which particularly appealed to the Shorensteins. and there are some exceptional pieces in their collection. They are exceptional for the clarity and brilliance of their colours, the skill inherent in their manufacture, and innovation of their designs. ? One vessel which provides an interesting link with other, earlier, materials, is a small 1 Nth century bluish-green tripod censer (lot 2919). The censer combines the 13 th century Longquan ceramic glazes. The Shorenstein Collection includes a number of beautiful vessels decorated in the 'cameo' style, which became popular in the i8th century. One which exhibits particular refinement is an opaque white vase with a red overlay that has been carved to produce a charming; design of birds perching on and flying above blossoming primus branches (lot 2926). Around the lower part ot the vase ornamental rocks, bamboo, chrysanthemums, peonies and orchids are scattered over the ground. The individual elements ot the design have been kept small, and in places the upper red glass has been reduced to a very thin layer suggesting the translucency of the flower petals, creating an overall impression of graceful delicacy. ? ‎Gutes Exemplar. - Text von Diana Scarisbrick. - Englisch. - Like the ancient Romans before them, Bulgari have set their stamp on an empire which reaches far beyond the confines of their native Italy. In addition to the flagships of Tokyo, Rome and New York, there are now thirty shops world-wide, two of them in London. Just as the Emperor Augustus imposed Roman law and institutions on his subject peoples, so Bulgari makes absolutely no concessions to local tastes: the stock and designs of the shops are identical everywhere. It is this universality which is the secret of their success. Bulgari jewellery can be worn with equal panache by all women, whether of oriental or western birth, of whatever type of beauty-blonde, red-head or brunette-and irrespective of age. Whereas most modern designs seem to repeat each other, and differ only in minor details, a Bulgari jewel stands out, being quite unlike anyone else's, yet striking a balance between originality and elegance. How has this come about? The story begins in 1879, when the founder, Sotirio Bulgari, came from Greece to seek his fortune as a silversmith in Rome. He prospered and by 1905 had premises not only in the Via Condotti, but branches in Naples and the resorts of Lucerne and St. Moritz. The name, 'The Old Curiosity Shop' which he chose for his enterprise, taken from the title of the novel of Charles Dickens, shows that his aim was to attract the attention of the many noble and rich British and American visitors brought by boat and railway to the towns of Italy and Switzerland. He must have made sure that a call at the St. Moritz shop would compare with the many agreeable distractions offered by the spa 'on the roof of Europe'. Die ältere Ware wurde noch kaltgebrannt, im 5. und 6. Jahrhundert produzierte man aber bereits unter Verwendung lokaler Rohmaterialien eine Art von Porzellan. ? Während der Song- und Yuan-Dynastie produzierte man Porzellan in Jingdezhen und anderen südchinesischen Brennstätten teilweise unter alleiniger Verwendung von Petuntse bei Temperaturen von ca. 1250 Grad. Im frühen achtzehnten Jahrhundert mischte man diese aber wieder zunehmend zu gleichen Teilen mit Kaolin und brannte bei 1350 Grad. So entstand ein sehr dauerhaftes Porzellan von strahlendem Weiß. In den eiförmig gebauten Brennöfen des Südens herrschten große Temperaturunterschiede, die durch Variierung des Kaolinanteils der Werkmasse ausgeglichen werden mussten. ... (wiki)‎

They are the officials of tomorrow, as bad as the officials of yesterday ..." Gauguin made this remark in 1896-1897, having long eliminated the last vestiges of Impressionist facture from his work. As the comment suggests, Gauguin was deeply concerned about the social and historical implications of advanced art. Impressionism had gained wide acceptance by the middle classes he so disdained; it was the legitimate cultural patrimony of the businessman and the flâneur. In contrast, Gauguin sought to explore the spiritual in art, identifying a redemptive role for the avant-garde in the Symbolist aesthetic he had been pursuing for eight years. Gauguin's mature style dates to his second trip to Brittany in 1888, during which time he painted L'Aven à travers Pont-Aven. In a sheltered landscape, two Breton peasant women and a male farmer carrying a hoe are nestled in hilly depressions, their presence barely detectable in the gently contoured land. The space of the composition is radically flattened and the perspective telescoped. As Gauguin compresses and simplifies the objects of the Breton landscape and its inhabitants, he invests great meaning in pictorial form and structure in order to translate his sensations before nature into symbolic form. A linear arabesque carries the eye through the visual field, weaving a kind of spatial tapestry that is echoed in Gauguin's insistent brushwork. Vertical accents provided by the trees and the edge of the house establish the outlines of a rudimentary grid that serves to lock the serpentine rhythm of the composition firmly in place. And color is heightened and carefully orchestrated in a range of analagous hues and glaring complementaries, as Gauguin constructs an ideal, synthetic order in which landscape, figure, and architecture effortlessly merge. L'Aven à travers Pont-Aven communicates the artist's longing for a spiritual union of man and nature in response to the excessive materialism of the modern world. Gauguin's Pont-Aven is the site of a lost organic unity whose formal counterpart is expressed in the artist's meandering line. The synthetic transformation of nature that Gauguin had first envisioned in Brittany, and subsequently in Tahiti, inspired an entire generation of French painters. For Henri Matisse, André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, the examples of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Signac justified formal purity and bold experiments in chromatic and spatial structure. Both van Gogh and Gauguin had been honored with memorial retrospectives at the Salon d'Automne, in 1903 and 1905 respectively; Signac, who was Matisse's mentor, presided over the Salon des Independents. Valminck studied in depth the work of all three painters during his Fauve period, but it was van Gogh and Gauguin who left the most lasting imprint on the younger artist's work. In the magnificent Paysage de banlieue of 1905-06, Vlaminck's staccato, choppy brushstroke and intense, pure palette immediately reveal his debt to van Gogh, while the structure of the composition as a series of continuous horizontal bands vertically stacked and opening into the background recalls both Gauguin and Cézanne. From the former, Vlaminck also borrowed the flat planes of color that define the rooftops of the houses in the upper right. (Introduction)‎

Picasso began Girl with a Mandolin (Fanny Tellier) (Z. 11,235, D.346, fig. 6), a work he was never to complete, though it was in fact a prelude to Femme a la mandoline. Ostensibly the young model, Fanny, quit after numerous sittings. Picasso later remarked, "It may be just as well I left it as it is." Golding considers it of great importance that Picasso saw the work as unfinished. "The legibility of this canvas demonstrates conclusively that although Cubist paintings were becoming more abstract in appearance, the artists were still deeply conditioned at least in early stages of their works, by the material existence and the physical appearance of their subjects ... the painting illustrates in a very concrete fashion the pull Picasso felt between the desire to give forms an explicit, volumetrical treatment, and the need to flatten them up onto the picture plane." Golding believed that this work, if completed, would have become "more elaborate, more abstract and more consistent in style."7 In fact, it might well have become Femme a la mandoline, an ostensibly more hermetic, less accessible, but intensely lyrical version of the same theme. But first Picasso had to undergo a crucial initiation into the realities of three-dimensional form before he was to reach what Douglas Cooper has labelled the period of "high" Cubism ? (S. 12)‎
