From the introduction: "Just as today 'brand image' is a vital part of the promotion of fashion and style at the world exhibitions and fairs regular exhibitors became household names. In the field of ceramics the firms of S�vres Minton Doulton Berlin and Meissen amongst many others contributed to almost every event bringing new products and styles to public attention. The famous glass artist Emile Gall� rose to prominence through his evolving designs for furniture cameo glass and jewellery. In furniture Pugin Unke Gillows and Bugatti are household names. For silver the British firm of Elkington's and the Frenchman Morel rubbed shoulders under the glazed roofs of the pavilions of Paris London and New York. Sculpture abounded. Special room settings representing nations designers and new architectural styles - such as the Finnish Pavilion designed by Saarinen for Paris in 1900 - were introduced. Exhibitors sought to improve their selective products at each new event and by so doing added to the development of design and created a history of style. Indeed some international styles such as those of Art Nouveau Paris 1900 and Art Deco Paris 1925 grew directly out of these exhibitions. The expositions exhibitions and fairs have been truly inspiring and have left their legacy in the form of architecture - especially the Eiffel Tower Paris Exposition 1889 and the Philadelphia Museum of Art the site of the Centennial Exhibition in 1876 - and of course the products of the international manufacturers and designers. Their exhibits have been officially and internationally endorsed and widely collected. From the introduction: The Sunderland sale in March 1883 afforded Bishop John Virtue a copy of the Jenson 1472 editio princeps of the Latin agricultural writers in a handsome early eighteenth-century English binding done for the collection of Charles Spencer the third Earl of Sunderland and from then on he seems to have bought fairly consistently from sales or from the purchases made by booksellers at these in London. From the Wodhull sale in 1886 there are several books and in 1891 books from the sale of Cornelius Paine. Indeed at this sale he purchased an edition of Nicolaus de Tudeschis Super Clementinas which in 1815 had been in the MacCarthy Reagh sale. This handsomely bound volume in a binding by Richard Wier for the count was printed in Toulouse lot 157. The splendid large copy of Simplicius Venice: Aldus 1526; lot 168 also in the MacCarthy Reagh sale seems to have been bought from a bookseller and in several volumes there are slips of catalogues: in one there is an undated note by Quaritch. Several books bought at the Syston Park sale 1884 and the Edward Sullivan sale May 1890 are to be found. An index of provenances is appended.Whilst many others at this period concerned themselves solely with classical texts Bishop Vertue spread his net wider. Nor did he limit himself to Italian presses: there are a number of rare and unusual items from the early Dutch presses including items from the Delft press of Jacob Jacobszoen van der Meer and in the sale are four English incunables from three presses those of Theodoric Rood William of Machlinia and Wynkyn de Worde. There are a number of volumes with contemporary manuscript annotations which show how they were read and used such as the copy of Acciaiolus on the Nicomachean Ethics Florence 1478; lot 1 or the Propertius Catullus and Tibullus Venice 1488; lot 88 which is provided with detailed indexes. Ces reliures de sentiment peuvent �galement porter un secret comme celle que Paul Bonet dessina en 1966 pour lui-m�me n'en pouvant plus d'attendre qu'on lui confie l'�dition originale des Fleurs du mal qu�il r�vait d'habiller depuis le d�but de sa carri�re. Le discours de l'�me en reliures de sentiments : les livres de Marcel De Merre sont des exemplaires qui ont la paix. From an advertisement for the sale: "The sale is dominated by large groups of watercolours of outstanding quality by three French artists. Nicolas Robert 1614-1685 was certainly the finest Natural History artist of the 17th Century and his work usually watercolour on vellum is extremely rare; this is by far the largest group of watercolours by him left in private hands. Jacques Barraband 1767-1809 is best known for his illustrations to Le Vaillant's ornithological books examples of which are included in the sale. Some 120 of Barraband's large preparatory watercolours which are of breathtaking quality and in superb condition. A large group of watercolours by Edouard Travies 1805-after 1866 from the 1830's for editions of LeBuffon .is followed by a smaller group of working studies for lithographs which date from the end of the next decade and clearly show the artist's development. The first section comprises medieval charters including those of Halesowen Abbey and historical letters and documents running from the twelfth century to the Glorious Revolution. Among them are Royal Letters Patent of Kings John and Henry III each with magnificent impressions of the Great Seal of England and with rare examples of medieval seal bags and those granted by Philip and Mary Elizabeth I and James I embellished with initial letter portraits of the monarchs one of James I with the superb coloured portrait which is illustrated as the frontispiece. Poignancy at least is served by the touching autograph �Memoriall� of Elizabeth I by the documents signed by Robert Dudley and his ill-used spouse by Richard Duke of York and George Duke of Clarence and by the bill for a monument in Magdalen College Oxford by the celebrated sculptor Nicholas Stone erected to the memory of the brothers Lyttelton who died together by drowning. Standing on its own is the autograph manuscript of the greater part of the first history of Worcestershire. Thomas Habington its author and godson of Elizabeth I. was a neighbour of the Lytteltons and like members of that family was heavily implicated in the Gunpowder Plot. The remainder of the catalogue is arranged as the papers of individual members of the family in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Sons and grandsons natural and legitimate of Sir Thomas Lyttelton d. 1751. Those of William Henry known affectionately as 'Billy' or more formally as 'Governor' reflecting his successive employments as Governor of South Carolina and Jamaica include letter books of the greatest historical importance providing. ineer alia unpublished information about his dealings with the American Indians. The papers of Admiral Thomas Smith known as �Tom of ten thousand� the illegitimate son of Sir Thomas are a panorama otlife in the navy in the eighteenth century. Bachelor Dean Charles follows the unmarricd Admiral. The letters from Horace Walpole to him are charming; those to his brother more waspish. Mrs Montagu is revealed as his friend; to his brother she was the 'Madonna'. That brother George first Lord Lyttelton poet scholar and Chancellor of the Exchequer gathered round him a galaxy of literary and political stars: Boswell Johnson a letter about George though addressed to his brother Garrick Swift Voltaire Pope James Thomson the elder Pitt Pelham Newcastle Bolingbroke Chesterfield Rodney Shenstone and William Warburton. The fourth Baron's papers include letters by Dickens and Macready about prostitution in the theatre and by Carlyle about the choosing of the librarian of the London Library. His brother.in-law W. E. Gladstone appears in the unlikely guise of poet but also as letter-writer; Queen Victoria as mourner for Albert a subject she rarely touched upon in her letters. Newman on his conversion and Cobden on the Corn Laws are among other correspondents with Manning Macaulay Tennyson Trollope and Browning. Minor marks to rear board otherwise near Very Good. From the introduction: "The Longueville Collection is a remarkable private collection formed over a period of fifteen years comprising printed books manuscripts and charts which relate to the first European encounters discoveries and eventual exploration and settlement of successively Terra Australis New Holland and the continent of Australia. It begins with the first publication of Rotz's great manuscript atlas from 1542 and concludes exactly four hundred years later with the publication of Frank Clune's biography of Donald Mackay. Present in the collection are books describing the early European voyages into the Pacific a unique group of First Fleet presentation and association copies first editions contemporary histories maps and manuscripts all of which combine to tell the story of the early development of Australia. The collection begins with the pre-settlement period the attempts to find Terra Australis by the Portuguese Spanish Dutch English and French navigators prior to the arrival of the First Fleet.
