Inro from the Collection of the Late Charles A. Greenfield
Sotheby's New York 1998 Book. Good. Hardcover. English text; Hardcover with dust jacket ; 22 x 28 cm; 0.813 Kg; 166 pages with 133 lots with colour illustrations and captions.; Used in good condition with signs of wear in the dust jacket front and back cover. Edgeworn. There is a mark of a staple removed on the front free endpaper.; Auction catalogue for the sale 7093 held at Sotheby's New York on the 25th of March 1998.; "Charles A Greenfield 1903-1997 was one of the last surviving members of what might be called the second generation of Japanese art collectors in the West. After Japan was opened to the outside world following the visit by Commodore Perry in 1853 Western collectors became enamored of various Japanese arts particularly the miniature art forms of netsuke inro and the fittings of the Japanese sword. A number of these early collections formed in France Germany Great Britain and America were dispersed during the first quarter of this century and provided fodder for the next generation of connoisseurs. Among these was Charles Greenfield who started collecting in the late 1930's. He began slowly acquiring a few netsuke then branching out to add inro and sword fittings. Among the collection offered here is an unusually large number of inro from the earliest manufacturing periods of the late 16th and 17th centuries. Included are examples of the Rimpa style with designs by Ogata Korin Tsuchida Soetsu and their followers as well as boldly decorated inro by Ogawa Haritsu "Ritsu" and his pupil Mochizuki Hanzan. From the 18th and 19th centuries we see works by various members of the Koma and Kajikawa families as well as fine inro by offshoots of these schools such as Moei Iizuka Toyo and others The later 19th centuries is represented by several works by Shibata Zeshin and by a few richly decorated gold lacquer inro of Shibayama type. The techniques used are highly varied and the catalogue has been broadly based upon the order used by Raymond Bushell in his Inro Handbook." excerpt from the introduction by Neil K. Davey.
