Sotheby's London auction catalogue 1988. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 41-88 pp plates some in colour. Lots 32-39. A separate catalogue for the eight extremely important early manuscripts included in the sale "The following eight lots are the property of the J.Paul Getty Museum in Malibu. Half of them are earlier than the mid-ninth century. They form a small part of the great Sammlung Ludwig the most outstanding library of medieval manuscripts assembled in the last half century. The collection was formed mostly through the agency of Mr. H.P. Kraus by Dr.Peter Ludwig of Aachen and was at one time on deposit at the Schntgen-Museum in Cologne. In early 1983 the entire Ludwig manuscript collection comprising nearly 150 items was sold en bloc to the Getty Museum . The lots are described in the order of their listing in Anton von Euw and Joachim M. Plotzek Die Handschriften der Sammlung Ludwig I-V Cologne 1979-1985. They begin with primitive fragments of a Theodulf Bible and of St.Aldhelm. Two outstanding secular manuscripts of the ninth century follow from the two great centres of Carolingian learning the schools of Auxerre and Laon. Both are illustrated with many schematic diagrams and are in almost perfect condition. The next lot is an Ottoman Macrobius with a world map and two further maps follow - an extremely rare fifteenth-century portolan and an entire renaissance atlas. The group concludes with the oldest manuscript to come for sale in over fifty years the celebrated Canons from the Phillipps and Bodmer libraries of the third quarter of the eighth century.
