Sotheby's New York auction catalogue for the sale held on 23rd April 1994. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 38 pp 38 full-page colour plates. 38 lots. From the introduction: "Glenbow Museum's preeminent collection of natural history books with some of the finest 19th-century colour-plate books includes rare 19th-century folios by John Gould and Daniel Giraud Elliot and an outstanding 18th-century work by Cornelius Nozeman . Most of the natural history books were purchased from British dealers in the early 1960s mainly from Wheldon and Wesley in London. A few were purchased in New York. The subjects are primarily ornithological and combine scientific research with fine decorative art. The book collection has an almost complete set of John Gould's publications. This includes Gould's first multi-volume ornithological work the second of the folio series The Birds of Europe 1832-1837 the drawing for which was based on the important private and institutional collections of specimens in Europe. Gould's eight-volume magnum opus which occupied over half of his career is The Birds of Australia 1840-1869. A Monograph of the Trochilidae 1849-1887 considered Gould's masterpiece with its magnificent illustrations of hummingbirds as well as The Birds of Asia 1850-1883 unfinished at the time of his death and the popular five-volume The Birds of Great Britain 1862-1873 are included. Gould focused with obsessive clarity on the spectacle of the birds presenting striking forms and breathtaking plumage in carefully detailed renditions. Also in the collection is Richard Sharp's Monograph of the Jaradiseidae 1891-1898 which reproduces some plates from Gould's Birds of New Guinea. Another important work in the collection is Daniel Giraud Elliot's celebrated A Monograph of the Tetraoninae 1864-1865 for which he provided most of the drawings. As well as fine folios the collection includes full sets up to the late 1960s of the journals The Ibis 1859-1967 and The Auk 1884-1968. Near Fine top foreedge corner a trifle bumped.
