The Continental library of Archibald 5th Earl of Rosebery and Midlothian K.G. K.T Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 25 May 1995
Sotheby's London Aeolian Hall auction catalogue for the sale held on 25th May 1995. Printed boards 4to. 222 pp plates some colour ills. 408 lots. Catalogue of books from the "Durdans" library of Archibald Philip Primrose 1847-1829 statesman sportsman biographer and noted bibliophile who succeeded his grandfather as the 5th Earl of Rosebery in 1868 and after two spells as Foreign Secretary in Gladstone's government served as Prime Minister from 1894 to 1895. In 1878 Lord Rosebery married Hannah Rothschild who in 1874 had inherited Mentmore from her father Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild. "Lord Rosebery had shown himself to have a precocious love of reading from a early age spending much of his time when at Chevening his mother's family house alone in the splendid library. His passion for buying books began while he was at Eton. He bought heavily at most of the finest late nineteenth-century sales. The 5th Earl's interests ranged widely and are amply reflected in his collection of continental books Perhaps its most striking feature is the number of landmarks of French literature and thought from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries; first editions of works by Marguerite de Navarre Montaigne Molire Pascal Montesquieu Marat and Madame de Stal; works relating to the Ligue the Fronde Quietism Jansenism the eighteenth-century philosophers and the Revolution. With such interests Lord Rosebery rivalled the finest French bibliophiles of his day." - from the introduction. With indexes of Authors and Provenances. Near Fine in dustwrapper.
