From the introduction: "Fred Adams . gradually patiently and with the utmost discrimination succeeded in building up one of the greatest Hardy collections ever assembled - not the largest in sheer size but unsurpassed in its overall quality and importance.it must surely be the last such collection ever to be in private as distinct from institutional hands. Although Fred was acquiring significant Hardy editions from early on - the three original first editions of The Dynasts for example including the 1903 issue of Part First that he bought from Heffers's during his brief Cambridge University experience - he seems to have turned decisively to the collection of truly unique materials only in 1934 after he had summoned the resolution to seize a classically irresistible but "unaffordable" opportunity to acquire a long sequence of Hardy to Gosse letters that had originally been put together by T. J. Wise. He subsequently captured Hardy's youthfully purchased copies of The Boy's Own Book and Shelley's Queen Mab at the J. M. Barrie sale in 1937 and made several shrewdly judged purchases at the Hodgson sale of Hardy's library in 1938. Following the death of his friend Carroll Atwood Wilson in 1947 he actively assisted in the compilation of the two-volume posthumous catalogue of Wilson's large and various collection and was later successful in securing some of the very best of Wilson's many Hardy items including several that had been in the Grolier Club's Hardy exhibition of 1940. At the Sydney Cockerell sale in 1956 he carried off among other things the very first lot comprising the presentation set of the Wessex Edition with Hardy's own corrections in some volumes and Cockerell's insertions throughout of letters from Hardy and others. He bought also at other sales including those of the A. Edward Newton and Paul Lemperly collections and although he came away empty-handed from both of the Sothebv sales of the extraordinary Howard Bliss collection - the New York dealer Lew Feldman having swept up all the lots at the first sale and all but one at the second - he did obtain during that collection's final negotiated dispersal just those materials that he had especially coveted.Fred of course was by no means entirely dependent upon the saleroom for his acquisitions. In the nineteen-thirties and forties and even well into the post-war years there were still people around who had known worked for or corresponded with Hardy and Fred directly or indirectly gathered in much interesting material from such sources: Hardy's own working drawings for the family tombstones at Stinsford for example the originals of the Macbeth-Raeburn illustrations to the Osgood Mcllvaine "Wessex Novels" edition and programmes and script materials related to the dramatisations of Hardy's novels performed by the Dorchester amateurs known as the Hardy Players.It is scarcely surprising that such a man should have been so strongly and consistently drawn towards the more biographical and immediately' human aspects of collecting - to letters manuscripts and inscribed and association copies all categories richly represented in the present sale. Fred's basic holdings of Hardy editions from magazine printings and first editions to Clement Shorter's and Florence Hardy's privately printed pamphlets were of course extensive and very nearly comprehensive but the first editions in particular had been selected and purchased almost without exception for the sake of their inscriptions - and the personal relationships thus evoked - rather than for any significance they might have as items checked off on a "wants" list Slight creasing to fore-edges otherwise Very Good. The English master at St Bernard's had introduced him to the poetry of Robert Frost and Edwin Arlington Robinson and he had read his first Hardy novel at the same time. He began to collect all three authors also Virginia Woolf EM. Forster Mary Webb Willa Cather H.M. Tomlinson and John Galsworthv. On 4 March 1933 he attended with other members of the family Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration as President of the United States. The President's speech heralding the New Deal was printed in Looking Forward issued at the end of the month. From the introduction: "Coyne became intrigued with the life and career of James Madison accumulating a rich collection of manuscripts documents and printed works by our nation's fourth chief executive which includes a 32-page autograph manuscript discussing the Constitution and its framers and a partial draft of his message to Congress in which he consoles a nation stunned by the Joss of Detroit to the British during the War of 1812. From this wellhead sprang the many other historical American manuscripts in the collection which range from Pilgrim times to the present day. Mr. Coyne acquired fine examples of all the presidents including a presidential pardon signed by William Henry Harrison during his first and only month in office and a letter by Lincoln to his military aide requesting documentation on the failed Hampton Roads Peace Conference with Confederate Leaders; most of the first ladies; all the Signers of the Declaration of Independence including the elusive autograph of Button Gwinnett; all the Signers of the Constitution; legion vice-presidents cabinet members and Supreme Court justices. Major military figures from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are also amply represented. A rare example in the hand of the schoolmaster and martyr spy Nathan Hale is perhaps one of only a dozen letters by him known to survive and the first to appear at auction since 1924. There is a bright cheerful autograph letter by Continental officer and traitor Benedict Arnold to his sister written while he was in the very midst of conspiring with the British to deliver them the plans of West Point. The towering dignified figure of Robert E. Lee is represented by a very fine copy of his magnificent valedictory General Orders No. 9 with emendations by his wife Mary Custis Lee; the same lot also includes a fair copy of those orders written out entirely by Mrs. Lee. Mr. Coyne's Americana includes printed material as well including both the vellum and paper issues of the Stone facsimile of the Declaration of Independence; the first publication of the United States Constitution in the 17 September 1787 issue of the Philadelphia newspaper The Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser; a first edition in the rare original boards of Lewis and Clark's narrative of their 8000-mile journey westward to the Pacific; and the scarce Charleston broadside announcing the secession of South Carolina. From the introduction by Paul Quarrie: "There are just over 900 works in this sale in about 1000 volumes.Once again we see a single-minded no-nonsense and pretty all-embracing approach to the collection of books for practical reasons by a practically involved man. For the most part the books are on military science with some historical works and collections of plates on specific campaigns from Crete in the sixteenth century the siege of Breda in the seventeenth and the Seven Years' War in the eighteenth . There are also books on fencing duelling and the man�ge of horses including the Duke of Newcastle s famous book.as well as some works on farriery and veterinary science. There are also books on naval matters and ship building including several rare works in Dutch and a copy of John Charnock's History of marine architecture London 1800-1802 the most recent book in the collection. And there are a number of important books on fireworks. In addition to the military works there are books on architecture Vitruvius Palladio Labacco Fischer von Erlach the latter in both the Vienna printed first edition and the English translation and many others a few books on sculpture. and there are some works like Falda s Le fontane di Roma which are part architectural and part topographical.There are approximately 112 books or works printed in the sixteenth century 385 from the seventeenth century and 417 from the eighteenth. The bulk of the books are English and there are a number of previously unrecorded items of all periods but there are many in French Italian German Dutch Spanish one or two in Latin and Greek editions of the ancient writers on military matters and a couple in Russian. Webster's was one of the few private collections to contain copies of all four folios of Shakespeare's plays. His collection also featured illuminated manuscripts as well as many first editions of English and American classics. Among the highlights were: The four folios of Shakespeare; The Pickwick Papers presented by Dickens to Hans Christian Andersen; A presentation copy of Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter; First editions of Pride and Prejudice Jane Eyre and Frankenstein; A presentation copy of Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; Keats' copy of Thomas Sackville's poems; A copy of A Christmas Carol inscribed by Swinburne to Watts-Dunton; A presentation copy of Flaubert's Madame Bovary to Champfleury; Uncle Tom's Cabin in a red 'gift' binding; A complete set of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence; A complete set of Presidential autographs from George Washington through Franklin Delano Roosevelt; A 1791 George Washington letter discussing plans for the new capital city; Franklin Delano Roosevelt's federal inlaid mahogany secretary circa 1820. Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 6th November 2001. Laminated wrappers 4to. 218 pp colour plates ills. 369 lots. From the introduction: "Frederick B. Adams Jr .bought his first 'rare book' at Yale the limited edition of Virginia Woolf's Orlando New York 1928. Further purchases followed in New Haven New York and London. The English master at St Bernard's had introduced him to the poetry of Robert Frost and Edwin Arlington Robinson and he had read his first Hardy novel at the same time. He began to collect all three authors also Virginia Woolf EM. Forster Mary Webb Willa Cather H.M. Tomlinson and John Galsworthv. On 4 March 1933 he attended with other members of the family Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration as President of the United States. The President's speech heralding the New Deal was printed in Looking Forward issued at the end of the month. This was the beginning of a Roosevelt collection: privately and publicly printed speeches Christmas pamphlets historical documents and the logs of cruises in the presidential yacht. Cloth cover ill 4to. unpaginated over 400 pp profusely illustrated including many fullpage colour plates. 528 lots nos 1978-2505 With an introduction by G. Thomas Tanselle. This part of the sale included Bradley Martin's spectacular collection of American literature including runs of first editions in fine condition association copies letters and manuscripts and his extensive collection of children's literature. The American literature was particularly strong in Edgar Allen Poe Herman Melville and Lafcadio Hearn material but with a huge range of landmark items from other authors including nearly all the literary first editions included in the Grolier "One Hundred Influential American books printed before 1900". The children's books were strong in both American and English titles including about two-thirds of those described in Blanck's "From Peter Parley to Penrod" a first edition of Tarzan in the dust-jacket and of English authors fine runs of Lewis Carroll Kate Greenaway Beatrix Potter and A.A.
