Adams Jr .bought his first 'rare book' at Yale the limited edition of Virginia Woolf's Orlando New York 1928. Further purchases followed in New Haven New York and London. The English master at St Bernard's had introduced him to the poetry of Robert Frost and Edwin Arlington Robinson and he had read his first Hardy novel at the same time. He began to collect all three authors also Virginia Woolf EM. Forster Mary Webb Willa Cather H.M. Tomlinson and John Galsworthv. On 4 March 1933 he attended with other members of the family Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration as President of the United States. The President's speech heralding the New Deal was printed in Looking Forward issued at the end of the month. This was the beginning of a Roosevelt collection: privately and publicly printed speeches Christmas pamphlets historical documents and the logs of cruises in the presidential yacht. From the introduction: "the library offered for sale is most of that which John Brett-Smith accumulated and retained as his personal collection at the time of his death supplemented by a few miscellaneous books which were the residue of his stock. It is dominated by the collection of English Literature of his favourite period: 1660-1730. Not the least important aspect of the Brett-Smith Library is the distinguished prominence of so many of the books. Indeed as the Index of Provenance below page 344 makes clear the vast range of notable collectors and libraries represented by the collection is virtually a selective guide to the history of English book-collecting over the past three-and-a-half centuries" The sale also included a group of works by "Elkanah Settle 1648-1724 self-styled "City Poet" featured in the library including a group encased in "Settle bindings'.' In the latter part of his career Settle became a purveyor of celebratory verses for the titled and wealthy and was responsible for initiating a style of binding that remained in vogue for more than two decades". Sotheby's New York auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th June 2001. Illustrated laminated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 280 pp plates some colour ills. 325 lots. From the introduction: "Coyne became intrigued with the life and career of James Madison accumulating a rich collection of manuscripts documents and printed works by our nation's fourth chief executive which includes a 32-page autograph manuscript discussing the Constitution and its framers and a partial draft of his message to Congress in which he consoles a nation stunned by the Joss of Detroit to the British during the War of 1812. From this wellhead sprang the many other historical American manuscripts in the collection which range from Pilgrim times to the present day. Mr. Coyne acquired fine examples of all the presidents including a presidential pardon signed by William Henry Harrison during his first and only month in office and a letter by Lincoln to his military aide requesting documentation on the failed Hampton Roads Peace Conference with Confederate Leaders; most of the first ladies; all the Signers of the Declaration of Independence including the elusive autograph of Button Gwinnett; all the Signers of the Constitution; legion vice-presidents cabinet members and Supreme Court justices. Major military figures from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are also amply represented. A rare example in the hand of the schoolmaster and martyr spy Nathan Hale is perhaps one of only a dozen letters by him known to survive and the first to appear at auction since 1924. There is a bright cheerful autograph letter by Continental officer and traitor Benedict Arnold to his sister written while he was in the very midst of conspiring with the British to deliver them the plans of West Point. The towering dignified figure of Robert E. Lee is represented by a very fine copy of his magnificent valedictory General Orders No. 9 with emendations by his wife Mary Custis Lee; the same lot also includes a fair copy of those orders written out entirely by Mrs. Lee. Mr. Coyne's Americana includes printed material as well including both the vellum and paper issues of the Stone facsimile of the Declaration of Independence; the first publication of the United States Constitution in the 17 September 1787 issue of the Philadelphia newspaper The Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser; a first edition in the rare original boards of Lewis and Clark's narrative of their 8000-mile journey westward to the Pacific; and the scarce Charleston broadside announcing the secession of South Carolina. From the introduction by Paul Quarrie: "There are just over 900 works in this sale in about 1000 volumes.Once again we see a single-minded no-nonsense and pretty all-embracing approach to the collection of books for practical reasons by a practically involved man. For the most part the books are on military science with some historical works and collections of plates on specific campaigns from Crete in the sixteenth century the siege of Breda in the seventeenth and the Seven Years' War in the eighteenth . There are also books on fencing duelling and the man�ge of horses including the Duke of Newcastle s famous book.as well as some works on farriery and veterinary science. There are also books on naval matters and ship building including several rare works in Dutch and a copy of John Charnock's History of marine architecture London 1800-1802 the most recent book in the collection. And there are a number of important books on fireworks. In addition to the military works there are books on architecture Vitruvius Palladio Labacco Fischer von Erlach the latter in both the Vienna printed first edition and the English translation and many others a few books on sculpture. and there are some works like Falda s Le fontane di Roma which are part architectural and part topographical.There are approximately 112 books or works printed in the sixteenth century 385 from the seventeenth century and 417 from the eighteenth. The bulk of the books are English and there are a number of previously unrecorded items of all periods but there are many in French Italian German Dutch Spanish one or two in Latin and Greek editions of the ancient writers on military matters and a couple in Russian. This part of the sale included Bradley Martin's spectacular collection of American literature including runs of first editions in fine condition association copies letters and manuscripts and his extensive collection of children's literature. The American literature was particularly strong in Edgar Allen Poe Herman Melville and Lafcadio Hearn material but with a huge range of landmark items from other authors including nearly all the literary first editions included in the Grolier "One Hundred Influential American books printed before 1900". The children's books were strong in both American and English titles including about two-thirds of those described in Blanck's "From Peter Parley to Penrod" a first edition of Tarzan in the dust-jacket and of English authors fine runs of Lewis Carroll Kate Greenaway Beatrix Potter and A.A. Cloth cover illustration 4to. unpaginated approx 500 pp profusely illustrated including many fullpage plates some in colour. 792 lots nos 2554-3345 This part of the sale comprised Bradley Martin's superb collection of English literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries. From the introduction: "As it is impracticable to list "highlights" since almost every other item is one let us mention just the William Beckford collection which spreads over 16 pages of this catalogue and includes nine first editions of one kind or another of Vathek/ An Arabian Tale a dozen other titles by Beckford or from his library and no less than 353 autograph letters from Beckford 1830-34 written from Bath to William Clark the Younger." The preliminary brochure had drawn attention to "Monuments of English literature from the sixteenth century to the present including a fine copy of the first edition of More's Utopia inscribed copies of Robert Browning's Pauline Elizabeth Browning's Battle of Marathon and Keats's Lamia as well as fine first editions of Spenser Austen Trollope the Brontes Sterne Fielding Swift Eliot and Joyce. Cloth cover ill 4to. unpaginated approx 400 pp profusely illustrated including many fullpage plates some in colour. 803 lots nos 520-1322 This part of the sale comprised Bradley Martin's superb collection of French literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries. "H. Bradley Martin was a great lover of all the literature of the Romantic period Lamartine Chenier Chateaubriand but he was also attracted by the revival of the novel at the hands of Balzac Flaubert Stendhal and Merimee. The poetry of the nineteenth century that of Hugo Baudelaire Verlaine for example naturally finds a place here. The collection moves into the twentieth century with Marcel Proust. A feature of the library is its collections of works by particular authors such as Balzac Sand and Hugo which are among the most important ever made. For Balzac the references to Pierre Duche or Gabalda are of lasting value. The two rare copies of Le Pere Goriot and La Peau de Chagrin derive from the library of Dr. Nacquart Balzac's personal physician and the library also includes his earliest works published under the pseudonyms of Saint-Aubin and Lord R'Hoone as well as numerous forgeries and first editions generally in original paper wrappers. Mr. Martin was not excessively concerned with the speculative value of his library. Alongside such prestigious items as a copy of Du cote de chez Swann inscribed to Anatole France and the various first editions of Baudelaire we find texts by less well-known authors such as Senancour 21 printed books an unpublished manuscript and letters and Corbiere. This quest for neglected authors accords perfectly with Verlaine's comment in Les Poetes Maudits where in speaking of Corbiere Rimbaud and Mallarme he states that 'one is hardly known another is unknown and the third is underestimated.'
