NUMBER ONE OF ONLY TEN SETS OF THIS OUTSTANDING PORTFOLIO OF EXPRESSIONIST ETCHINGS, WITH MANY OF THE ETCHINGS PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER. In 1918 German novelist Hans Bethge wrote "Satuila oder vom Zauber der Suedsee" ("Satuila or the Enchantment of the South Sea"), the story of a young woman in Samoa. It is a sensual, escapist tale: the situation in Germany was quite terrible after the defeat in WWI, and there was great demand for escapism. This novel was a hit, and a deluxe edition, with 6 original etchings by German Expressionist artist Georg Alexander Mathey, was published in Berlin in 1921. The etchings are extremely beautiful, perfectly capturing the lush sensuality of the landscape and the unabashed sexuality of the characters (similar to the depictions of Gypsies by Otto Mueller, from about the same time). This edition of the novel was limited to 250 copies. Aside from the book edition, 10 sets of the etchings were printed, with large margins. In these 10 sets, each of the etchings is signed and numbered by the artist. I OFFER ONE OF THESE 10 SETS: SET NUMBER 1, with each of the etchings numbered 1/10 and signed in pencil by the artist. FOUR OF THE SIX ETCHINGS IN THIS SET ARE PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER, AND ARE PERHAPS UNIQUE AS SUCH. Additionally, there is a signed working proof of an early version of one of the etchings, also printed on old Japanese paper. This proof is probably unique, as the etching was never published. The set is as it was issued. Each etching (sheet size 8 1/2 x 7 inches--22 x 18 cm) is individually matted, and the original parchment-backed cloth portfolio case (16 1/2 x 13 inches--42 x 33 cm). There is a little light wear to the portfolio, but the etchings are fine and bright. An important and extremely rare item (and perhaps the only German Expressionist depictions of the South Pacific!)

Slipcase is also fine strong and sturdy clean without wear. "The Handbook of Phrenology" is a collaboration between artist Hilary Lorenz an artist and printmaker whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States Europe and Asia and the co-founder of the Dolphin Press and writer Albert Mobilio a poet and literary critic whose work has appeared in The Village Voice Harper's Fortune and The New York Times Book Review n. b. artist bios from the book. <br/><br/>The book is a collection of five prose fiction pieces that revolved around the nineteenth-century science of phrenology or "the reading of one's head shape to determine personality" n. b. from website of Hilary Lorenz and is a provocative examination of what is now recognised as a pseudoscience.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Full black Japanese Asahi cloth gilt vignette and lettering on the front board hand-marbled paste-down endpapers hand-sewn binding six etchings interspersed throughout the text both etchings and text printed on the rectos only; Dante monotype on Rives Heavyweight elephant folio in size 16" by 13.5" unpaginated with 20 leaves excluding front and back blank leaves per the colophon page a limited edition of 100 copies this being number 7 per the web site for Hilary Lorenz numbers 10-100 were for sale signed by Albert Mobilio and Hilary Lorenz on the colophon. The slipcase is covered in matching cloth gilt vignette and lettering on the front which mirrors the book lined with maroon paper. With a sheet with a description of the book serving as the prospectus one sheet printed on one side.<br/> <br/>___CONDITION: Volume is fine with a strong square text block solid hinges perfectly straight corners with no rubbing the interior is clean and bright and it is entirely free of prior owner markings - crisp as new. Slipcase is also fine strong and sturdy clean without wear. Publisher's navy cloth paper spine title labels gilt top page edges all other edges deckle. With a portrait and eight etchings all present by Charles Edouard de Beaumont and two illuminated Persian designs. Montesquieu 1689-1755 was a French political thinker and philosopher as well as a social commentator during the Enlightenment. His theories of separation of powers feudalism and his perspective on the Byzantine Empire have established his role as precursor for many fields of social anthropology including slavery reformation. These volumes comprise an excellent early example of an epistolary novel. Each volume with light foxing throughout two Honduran postage stamps on the front pastedowns a few contemporary owner ink stamps and small blindstamps on some of the preliminary and rear pages a two small chips at one of the paper spine labels with light shelfwear overall else Near Fine. De petits manques de papier sur le haut et le bas du dos avec débuts de fente sur les mors, pages de garde et dernières pages insolées (achevé d'imprimé et les pages vierges suivantes), des rousseurs sur quelques pages, bon état pour le reste.
