(MARCUNE, Ben Fortunato)
Original Art: Five Concept Drawings for "Great American Fry Machine" French Fry Vending Machines
Unbound. Fine. Five concept drawings. Gouache and airbrush with some cut-out elements. Each drawing is approximately 16.5" x 22" mounted on slightly larger card boards. Unsigned but accomplished by important industrial designer Ben Fortunato Marcune who later shifted his focus to sculpture and art. Each painting is on paper tipped-on to artist's board with a plastic overlay sheet. Three of the drawings are for vending machines the other two are designs for a trade show booth incorporating the machines. The condition of each is fine. As ludicrous as it seems French fry vending machines actually enjoyed a brief vogue in the 1980s and 1990s first appearing in 1982 in Australia and still exist today albeit in scattered locations. The machine used boiling cooking oil and had a built-in fire extinguisher. More recent versions use hot air to heat the fries. These drawings date appear to be from the early to mid-1980s and are striking whimsical and pleasing and shed light on various innovations in marketing and processing foods. unknown
