‎DAVID BEN GURION‎

‎David Ben-Gurion on Moshe Sharett’s Resignation as Foreign Minister‎

‎<p>"<i>I came to recognize that your service as Foreign Minister was not for the good of the country although I did not cease to value your talents and dedication.</i>"</p> <b>DAVID BEN-GURION.</b>Autograph Letter Signed to Moshe Sharett July 28 1956 Mount Carmel Israel. 3 pp. 4½ x 8¼ in.<p>Sharett served as Foreign Minister under Prime Minister Ben-Gurion from 1949 to 1954. He succeeded Ben-Gurion as Prime Minister from January 1954 to December 1955. When Ben-Gurion was reinstated as Prime Minister Sharett returned as Foreign Minister. Within months their relationship had deteriorated and Sharett resigned in protest on June 18 1956.</p><p>In 1952 Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew the Egyptian monarchy and introduced land reform. He became president in June 1956 calling for pan-Arab unity. Moshe Sharett believed that Nasser had delusions of grandeur and similarly that Ben-Gurion viewed himself as a messianic liberator. Ben-Gurion thought Sharett was being too cautious. Sharett believed Ben-Gurion was unwilling to negotiate. The cabinet voted 35 to 7 in favor of Sharett's resignation and he resigned on June 18 1956. Golda Meir succeeded Sharett as Foreign Minister and served until 1966. Three years later she became Israel's fourth Prime Minister. Over the next six weeks their correspondence resulted in this letter.</p><p><b>Complete Transcription</b></p><p><i>Mount Carmel 28 July 1956</i></p><p><i>To Moshe Sharett –peace and blessings</i></p><p><i>I hereby thank you for your detailed reply of 25 July to my letter to you of 8 July. I was pleased by your notification that your questions at the end of the letter were not intended to be given a reply. I do not believe that anyone will derive any benefit from arguments of this sort. However I feel obliged to</i> illegible <i>about two things.</i></p><p><i>A I absolutely reject the interpretation you gave on page 2 paragraph 10 of your letter to my remarks at the party Central Committee on 8 August 1955 as if "the Foreign Minister must serve as a kind of spokesman for the IDF." I did not and could not conceive of such an absurd idea. I said – and this is my considered opinion – that foreign policy needs to serve the needs of security in addition of course to trade agreements and things of that kind these too being within the bounds of its operation.</i></p><p><i>I don't have the stenogram at hand but I haven't any doubt that there is no foundation to the peculiar "interpretation" that you gave to my remarks.</i> <i>Also</i><i> when comrades disagree with one another – it's better for the disagreements not to go beyond the bounds which those in disagreement set for themselves.</i></p><p><i>B I reject the premise upon which question 9 on page 12 of your letter is based. I fear that my clarification will sadden you and as God is my witness I don't have any intention or desire to cause you any sorrow. But I regard it as my comradely duty to apprise you of my opinion in this painful matter. Little by little I came to recognize that your service as Foreign Minister was not for the good of the country although I did not cease to value your talents and dedication as before and all that I said in praise of you at the Knesset in my announcement of your resignation was not said out of courtesy and politeness</i> illegible<i> but rather out of recognition and heartfelt belief.</i></p><p><i>The stupid idea that there is only one person in Israel capable of serving as prime minister never crossed my mind and in</i> my <i>broadcast to the nation on the day of my resignation I warmly quoted Verse 1 in Chapter 131 of the Book of Psalms.</i> <i>And I admit that I'm not of the opinion that there is only a single person in Israel who is allowed to conduct foreign policy. On the contrary it became clear to me without any hesitation and I know that I am capable of error in this matter like anyone who is flesh and blood that the good of the State requires a different management at the Foreign Ministry. I am certain that you will not concur with my opinion and by no means will I try to convince you. One thing I can assure you in good faith: I didn't do what I did out of a "relationship gone awry."</i></p><p>_________</p><p><i>It seems that your letter of 24 August 1955 to Eshkol</i> <i>Beba</i> <i>Kesse</i> <i>and Namir</i> <i>never reached me. I'll look into this matter upon my return to Jerusalem.</i></p><p><i>For my part I'm not at all opposed to you showing these your answers to anyone that you wish.</i></p><p><i>With blessings</i></p><p><i>D. Ben-Gurion </i></p><p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p><b>David Ben-Gurion</b> 1886-1973 was born in the Kingdom of Poland then part of the Russian Empire as David Grün and he studied at the University of Warsaw. In 1906 he immigrated to Palestine which was part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1912 he moved to Constantinople to study law and adopted the Hebrew name Ben-Gurion. He supported the Ottoman Empire in World War I but was deported to Egypt and traveled to the United States where he remained for three years. After the Balfour Declaration of 1917 he joined the Jewish Legion of the British Army. He returned to Palestine after the war and became a leader of the Zionist movement. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935 Ben-Gurion was effectively the leader of the Jewish population before there was a nation. He accepted the 1947 partition plan as a compromise that would establish a Jewish state and declared the independence of the state of Israel in May 1948. After leading Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War Ben-Gurion won election as Prime Minister of Israel in 1948 as head of the Labour party in the Knesset. He resigned in December 1953 effective January 26 1954 then resumed office in November 1955 and served as Israeli Prime Minster until 1963. He then moved to Sde Boker a kibbutz in the Negev desert where he lived until his death.</p><p><b>Moshe Sharett</b> 1894-1965 was born in Kherson in the Russian Empire modern Ukraine and emigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906. In 1910 his family moved to Jaffa and later became one of the founding families of Tel Aviv. He studied law at Istanbul University but left to serve as an interpreter in the Ottoman Army in World War I. From 1922 to 1931 he lived in London and worked as a newspaper editor and journalist. He returned to Mandatory Palestine in 1931 and worked in the Jewish Agency of which he became head in 1933. He signed Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948 and served as the Foreign Minister in the Provisional Government in 1948 and in the first cabinet formed in 1949. When Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion retired from politics in January 1954 Sharett succeeded him as Prime Minister. In the wake of the Lavon Affair Ben-Gurion came out of retirement to resume the office of Prime Minister in November 1955 and Sharett again served as Foreign Minister. He resigned as Foreign Minister in June 1956 in protest of the new government's policies.</p> books‎

‎BOHR Aage Niels 1922 2009; Ben Roy MOTTELSON 1926 .‎

‎Collective and Individual-Particle Aspects of Nuclear Structure.‎

‎Copenhagen:: Ejnar Munksgaard 1953. 1953. 8vo. 174 pp. Original printed wrappers; joints repaired with kozo. Ownership signature of Prof. Charles Strachan. Very good. Offprint. From: Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab Matematisk-Fysiske Meddelelser Bind 27 Nr. 16. Aage Niels Bohr shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physics with Ben Roy Mottelson and Leo James Rainwater "for the discovery of the connection between collective motion and particle motion in atomic nuclei and the development of the theory of the structure of the atomic nucleus based on this connection" :: this paper. "On my return to Copenhagen in the autumn of 1950 I took up the problem of incorporating the coupling suggested by Rainwater into a consistent dynamical system describing the motion of a particle in a deformable core. Soon I was joined by Ben Mottelson in pursuing the consequences of the interplay of individual-particle and collective motion for the great variety of nuclear phenomena that was then coming within the range of experimental studies" :: Bohr's Nobel Lecture. "According to modern physics an atomic nucleus consists of nucleons - protons and neutrons. In earlier models the nucleus was depicted as being spherical but this proved to be inaccurate. In 1950 James Rainwater postulated that the atomic nucleus can be distorted. The nucleons in the outer portions of the atomic nucleus move about in paths and interact with nucleons inside causing the nucleus to be distorted. Independently of Rainwater Aage Bohr arrived at the same theory and corroborated it through experiments in collaboration with Ben Mottelson in 1952 and 1953." :: NobelPrize. PROVENANCE: Charles Strachan 1907-1993 Scottish mathematician and physicist Reader at the University of Aberdeen he mentored Sir George Paget Thomson FRS 1892-1975 the son of J.J. Thomson who earned the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1937 for his discovery of the wave properties of the electron by electron diffraction. "Quantum ideas were being shaped into a mathematical theory which could be applied to a vast range of hitherto intractable problems. Charles Strachan was to be among the young mathematical physicists who seized on the opportunities thus offered. He duly completed his undergraduate work in Aberdeen with a First Class Honours degree. At that time it was standard practice in Scottish universities for the best graduates aiming at an academic career to read for a further undergraduate degree at Oxford or Cambridge. G P Thomson arranged for him to go to Thomson's former Cambridge College Corpus Christi where he undertook an accelerated tripos attending courses by such great names in relativity and quantum theory as Eddington and Dirac. Charles Strachan achieved the distinction of becoming Junior Wrangler. He then embarked on research at Cambridge first under R H Fowler and then under J E Lennard Jones and was awarded a Cambridge PhD in 1935. Prominent among his pre-war researches were investigations the earliest in collaboration with Lennard Jones of the interaction of atoms and molecules with solid surfaces. These papers brought out some important quantum effects in the behaviour of systems of many atoms and presented mathematical procedures which made possible the application of quantum mechanics to the quantitative treatment of these effects. They represented significant early contributions not only to surface physics but more generally to aspects of solid state physics which are still the subject of extensive investigation. Part of this work was done at Aberdeen where he held an assistantship and then a lectureship between 1933 and 1937. In 1937 he was invited by Professor Max Born to take up a temporary lectureship for one year in his Department in Edinburgh and he clearly decided that the opportunity of working with this very great theoretical physicist could not be missed." :: C. W. McCombie. Ejnar Munksgaard, 1953. unknown books‎

‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎No Binding. Very Good. Typed letter in Hebrew signed "D. Ben-Gurion" as Minister of Defense on State of Israel letterhead one page 6" x 8" August 26 1955. Translation of the Hebrew text: "I have no doubt that the problem of security disturbs your rest. True the problem of security at this time is the principal problem of the State. Any person - just like an entire nation - can feel the danger waiting at his door. We are a small nation and any boasting we do will only make a laughingstock out of us. But we are not powerless not in the military sense and certainly not in the moral and political sense. I however am calm and certain that when it comes to the test the Israel Defense Forces will be able to defend our peace and our sovereignty - the Israel Defense Forces is the army of the people and of all its circles and factions." File holes along right margin otherwise fine condition. A dramatic letter with excellent content from the first Prime Minister of Israel. unknown books‎

‎Gridley Austin aka Ben Conlon‎

‎Pete Rice Pulp Magazine - The Complete Run‎

‎Pete Rice Magazine A very scarce and desirable western title. Pete Rice Magazine was one of several single character hero pulp titles published by Street & Smith. With a cover date of November 1933 for the first issue he appeared just eight months after Doc Savage appeared on the stands and nine months after Nick Carter. The title changed to Pete Rice Western Adventures with the September 1935 issue and continued as such until the end of the run. Austin Gridley was the Street & Smith house author that the Pete Rice stories appeared under however most were written by a pulp author named of Ben Conlon. In "Cheap Thrills" Ron Goulart describes the Pete Rice realm as "built around a cowboy with a coterie of distinctive sidekicks." In his book "The Pulp Western" John Dinan considered Pete Rice more a modern detective than your typical pulp fiction cowboy "as the crimes and circumstances surrounding them were modern and not particularly western e.g. counterfeiting." Nick Carr cites Link Huller as referencing telephones and cars popping up in the stories occasionally. Pete seemed to be stuck somewhere between the old west and the early 20th century. The first 26 issues had nice striking cover art by Walter Baumhofer. Starting with the January 1936 issue R.G. Harris took over and continued until the end of the run with the June 1936 issue. Pete Rice has traditionally been a very difficult run to put together and to obtain all 32 issues can be quite a daunting task. Average condition is about VG/FN with many high grade. $8500.00 Nov 1933 #1 VG Dec 1933 #2 VG sm int tp Jan 1934 #3 VG Feb 1934 FR/G Mar 1934 G int tp April 1934 G May 1934 int. tp.
