BEN GURION DAVID
Ben-Gurion Mentions Trumpeldor: Israel’s Most Famous Military Hero

BEN-GURION DAVID. 1886-1973. Polish-born Israeli statesman who became Israel's first prime minister after proclaiming its independence in 1948. ALS. "D. Ben Gurion". 1p. Postcard. Jerusalem March 6 1955. To Israeli historian and politician BEN-ZION DINUR 1884-1973. In Hebrew with translation. The postcard bears a postal cancellation that commemorates the 40th anniversary of the formation of Trumpeldor's famous Zionist Mule Corps.

"On the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of the 'Zionist Mule Corps' by Joseph Trumpeldor and his friends the youth should know more about the personal example set by the members of the Second Aliyah whose actions and heroism have become the personal educator of the people…"

An early Zionist Ben-Gurion moved to Palestine in 1906 to take up farming. Following his expulsion by Turkey at the outbreak of World War I he rallied British and American support to promote increased Jewish immigration to Palestine and after spending decades strengthening Palestine's Jewish community Ben-Gurion proclaimed the birth of Israel on May 14 1948. He assisted in creating the Israeli army often using military force to thwart Arab violence. After announcing his intention to leave public life Ben-Gurion moved to the newly founded Negev Kibbutz Sde-Boker in early 1954. He never completely abdicated his leadership role however and in February 1955 Ben-Gurion returned to public life first as minister of defense in which capacity he penned our letter. Following his tenure as defense minister he was reelected prime minister in November 1955.

Born in Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus Joseph Trumpeldor 1880-1920 abandoned his training as a dentist to join the Russian army in 1902 losing an arm during the Russo-Japanese War. He returned to active duty as quickly as possible but was taken prisoner by the Japanese. After regaining his freedom he became the most decorated Jewish soldier in the Russian army and the first Jew to be offered an officer's commission. However because of his disability Trumpeldor resigned from the military to study law. Increasingly interested in Zionism's goal of establishing a Jewish homeland Trumpeldor immigrated to Palestine Erez Israel in 1911 then part of the Ottoman Empire where he lived and worked on several collective farms while helping defend Jewish settlements in the Lower Galilee.

With the outbreak of World War I in 1914 the Russian-born Trumpeldor became an enemy alien in Ottoman Palestine and was deported to Egypt where he organized his fellow deportees into a military organization created to assist the British liberation of Palestine from the Ottomans. In 1915 Trumpeldor established the Zion Mule Corps or Jewish Legion part of the 38th and 42nd Battalions of Royal Fusiliers and the subject of our letter. Most of the Jewish volunteers were sent to the Dardanelles during the Gallipoli Campaign where they fought heroically against the Turks. They returned to Egypt and the corps disbanded in 1916.

By 1919 Trumpeldor had returned to Palestine where he was instrumental in the immigration of Russian-Jewish soldiers to British-occupied Palestine. On March 1 1920 the Jewish farming village of Tel Hai in the Upper Galilee's Hulah Valley came under attack by Shiite gangs from neighboring Lebanon who were searching for French soldiers. Anticipating trouble a militia led by Trumpeldor and organized by the Jewish defense organization Hashomer arrived and a skirmish broke out resulting in a number of casualties on both sides including the fatally-wounded Trumpeldor who had been shot in the stomach. His last words were reported to have been "Never mind it is good to die for our country" "Ein davar tov lamut be'adartzeinu" an expression that became as famous as Nathan Hale's "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Trumpeldor remains to this day one of Israel's greatest military heroes.

Born in the Russian Empire Dinur became involved in Zionist activities around the turn of the century. He immigrated to Palestine in 1921 where he continued his academic career as a scholar of Jewish history. At the time of our letter Dinur was a professor at Hebrew University as well as a member of the Knesset and Minister of Education and Culture succeeding Ben-Gurion in that post and serving from October 1951 until November 1955.

Written on an Israel Post postcard bearing a March 8 1955 Jerusalem post mark and a second ink postal cancellation in Hebrew and English commemorating the Zion Mule Corps. With normal wear and a file hole in the right margin. In excellent condition.

books

BEN GURION DAVID
Autograph Letter Signed in Hebrew 8vo Berlin Nov. 26 1924
Ben-Gurion emphasizes the importance of talented labor in Palestine. He was in Berlin trying to secure a visa into Poland. In the mid-1920s a large number of Polish Jews immigrated to Palestine due to the political and economic crises in Poland the Johnson-Lodge Immigration Act passed by the U.S. Congress which curtailed mass immigration to America. If Ben-Gurion was trying to enter Poland the country of his birth to promote immigration to Palestine he was not successful. He begins this letter telling his friends that "he is unable to get a visa to go to Poland and must return to Aretz." The letter deals with Ben-Gurion's strategy to promote immigration to Palestine and to create "a firm bond between the Histadrut and the Hehalutz."

Ben-Gurion says that upon his return to Aretz his first concern will be "to increase the Aliya of Halutzim pioneering aliya creating a firm bond between the Histadrut and the Hehalutz and making the central role of our movement abroad the development of Hehalutz." He continues "At the moment I see two Histadruts which contain within the creative forces of our movement: the Workers Histadrut in Aretz and the Hehalutz Histadrut abroad. The strength value talent greatness influence and success of one is tied to the other. The fates of both are intertwined." He then asks his friends to "prepare the Hehalutz for its great destiny" a job he notes as being a great responsibility and hard work. He assures them that the "Histadrut will help as much as it can." The letter is signed "D. Ben-Gurion." Israel's General Federation of Labor the Histadrut was an organization of trade unions established in 1920 during the British Mandate for Palestine. It was founded by Ben-Gurion and others to look out for the interest of Jewish workers and designed to "form a tightly controlled autonomous Jewish economic state within the Palestine economy. It functioned as much more than a traditional labor union providing. social services and security setting up training centers helping absorb new immigrants. teaching them Hebrew. "jewishvirtuallibrary section on British Palestine Mandate. As the goal at the time was to increase the number of Jews going to settle in Palestine a strong bond needed to be secured between the Histadrut and those in the Hehulutz who were helping in countries abroad to teach train and compel Jews to immigrate to Palestine. The job of the Hehalutz which was primarily a youth movement an umbrella of the Zionist Youth Movement was to bring Jews to Israel training them for pioneer life in skilled trades. As early at 1924 Ben-Gurion was trying to get more skilled immigrants to Israel. He felt that the only way was to get the Hehalutz to work hand in hand with the trade unions and to promote all that they were doing for workers in Palestine. Ben-Gurion in this letter is emphasizing his desire to see that the two the pioneers in Palestine and those abroad who were to help train skilled workers and promote the Histadrut work together to form a state that could be independent. Ben-Gurion a major Zionist leader led the Jewish community in Palestine on its struggle for an independent Jewish state. unknown books

Printed letterpress by Patrick Reagh in an edition of 500 copies. The Antinomian Press was established by Ben Kinmont in 1996 to print and distribute books and ephemera in support of project art. To date there have been more than 150 items published. DELAWARE RIVER AND BAY 1600-1999: A SELECTIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY.THE
New Castle Delaware: Oak Knoll Press 2008. Hardcover. 8.5 x 11 inches. Hardcover. 276 pages. First edition. This work is a new bibliography on the Delaware River and Bay by Ben Cohen the author of similar bibliographies on the Thames and the Clyde. The author first became interested in the Delaware River when he read D.B. Tyler's The Bay and River Delaware which refers to the Delaware as the "American Clyde." Tyler writes poetically of the Delaware: "Its upper reaches have the beauty and vigor of youth. When at Trenton it turns adventurously westward growing bigger and straighter it has the solidity and single-mindedness of maturity. At the end when it swings southward to lose itself in the greater ocean it takes on the grandeur and dignity of age conscious of its past." This comparison to the Clyde in Scotland where Cohen was born ignited the bibliographer's interest in the Delaware. The Delaware River and Bay bibliography includes chapters on photographs bridges maps fish ports and commerce of the Delaware containing hundreds of annotated entries and concludes with four useful appendices including one on Delaware River shipwrecks. As with his other books original title spellings have been retained for historical purposes. Author Ben Cohen F.R.C.S. is a graduate of Glasgow University and bibliographer of The Thames 1580-1980: A General Bibliography first published in 1985 and The River and Firth of Clyde 1549-1993: A Selective Bibliography first published in 1995.
