An unproduced screenplay adaptation of Ben Hecht's short story "The Shadow" in which the magician Sarastro seeks vengeance against his brother for the alienation of his wife. The script is uncredited but at least one reference i.e. Wikipedia attribute this script to Australian-born screenwriter and playwright Ivan Goff and his frequent collaborator Ben Roberts. While it generated interest particularly on the part of Warner Bros. it didn't see production. This example copy #10 is a duplicate from the Selznick archives. B&W photographs facsimiles A collection of long out-of-print pieces by Hecht assembled within a kind of artist's-book format with numerous illustrations many of which are glued in by hand they are referred to by the publisher as "color appliques" and were replaced in later editions with printed versions; a few are printed on clear mylar. Artists and illustrators whose work is reproduced include Herman Rosse Frank Charles Peyraud Wallace Smith George Grosz and Jerome Blum; there is also some biographical information about Rosse and Grosz. Per the limitation page this is one of "75 copies of which this is Number 3. Numbers 1-24 comprise a uniform edition after which there will be a color change on the inner cover." Two NOTES: 1 the leaf containing pages 63/64 is bound in upside down; 2 the publication information refers to a "hand-painted frontispiece by Sheila Crider" but in the acknowledgements it's referred to as "our exuberant cover of Sheila Crider's paint on hand made paper"; it is quite clearly the latter not a pictorial "frontispiece" as that term is generally understood; at any rate it's very nice -- but it's the inner cover not the outer cover and is positioned beneath a clear mylar page on which the title of the volume is printed. . Benny Hecht is coming too - I work like hell have to do one hundred drawings for Benny’s new book 1001 Afternoons in N.Y. Viking Press. Hence I have so little time work day & night so little time to come to N.Y. and call on you. If you like to come give me a word Artie - it is okay too if you have something for the evening to drive out later - just at your convenience with all my best wishes George Grosz.†This one page letter is beautifully penned in purple ink. It has two drawings by Grosz. One is a drawing involving musical notes and the second is an arm and hand with finger pointing out the Grosz telephone number. In one Hecht imagines a soul imprisoned in a steel girder; in another he considers the fate of an angel come down from heaven. <br /> <br /> His story The Little Candle predicts the Holocaust opening "on that dreadful July morning" when "we learned that overnight some five hundred thousand Jews had been murdered in Germany Italy Rumania and Poland." The killing continued; an American rabbi commits suicide and a miracle results. "The meaning of the miracle was that when all the rages of man had spent themselves and the world lay in unholy chaos.out of the unconsumed soul of the Jew God's light would rise again."<br /> <br /> Hecht the son of Russian Jews is best known as one of the leading screenwriters of the mid-20th century.<br /> <br /> 465 pages. First edition first printing stating "First published in June 1939" on the copyright page. A very good copy minor stains to a few pages; paper adhesion on the rear pastedown in a good gold dust jacket chipped at the edges missing a shallow piece at the top of the spine and with scratches on the rear panel. A few tape repairs on the back verso of the jacket.<br /> <br /> This copy has a bookplate inscribed by the author mounted on the half-title page using picture corners "To James Gallagher Ben Hecht." <br /> <br /> Provenance: The collector James Strand with his small estate bookplate on the front free endpaper. Cloth shows minor fraying at top of spine. Previous owner's bookplate on fpep mostly covered by jacket flap. Some aged scotch tape remnants on title page resulting from an old inscription card being taped in. Overall a very bright and attractive copy of this extremely rare first printing.
