‎BEN GURION DAVID‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed in Hebrew 8vo Berlin Nov. 26 1924‎

‎Ben-Gurion emphasizes the importance of talented labor in Palestine. He was in Berlin trying to secure a visa into Poland. In the mid-1920s a large number of Polish Jews immigrated to Palestine due to the political and economic crises in Poland the Johnson-Lodge Immigration Act passed by the U.S. Congress which curtailed mass immigration to America. If Ben-Gurion was trying to enter Poland the country of his birth to promote immigration to Palestine he was not successful. He begins this letter telling his friends that "he is unable to get a visa to go to Poland and must return to Aretz." The letter deals with Ben-Gurion's strategy to promote immigration to Palestine and to create "a firm bond between the Histadrut and the Hehalutz." <br/><br/>Ben-Gurion says that upon his return to Aretz his first concern will be "to increase the Aliya of Halutzim pioneering aliya creating a firm bond between the Histadrut and the Hehalutz and making the central role of our movement abroad the development of Hehalutz." He continues "At the moment I see two Histadruts which contain within the creative forces of our movement: the Workers Histadrut in Aretz and the Hehalutz Histadrut abroad. The strength value talent greatness influence and success of one is tied to the other. The fates of both are intertwined." He then asks his friends to "prepare the Hehalutz for its great destiny" a job he notes as being a great responsibility and hard work. He assures them that the "Histadrut will help as much as it can." The letter is signed "D. Ben-Gurion." Israel's General Federation of Labor the Histadrut was an organization of trade unions established in 1920 during the British Mandate for Palestine. It was founded by Ben-Gurion and others to look out for the interest of Jewish workers and designed to "form a tightly controlled autonomous Jewish economic state within the Palestine economy. It functioned as much more than a traditional labor union providing. social services and security setting up training centers helping absorb new immigrants. teaching them Hebrew. "jewishvirtuallibrary section on British Palestine Mandate. As the goal at the time was to increase the number of Jews going to settle in Palestine a strong bond needed to be secured between the Histadrut and those in the Hehulutz who were helping in countries abroad to teach train and compel Jews to immigrate to Palestine. The job of the Hehalutz which was primarily a youth movement an umbrella of the Zionist Youth Movement was to bring Jews to Israel training them for pioneer life in skilled trades. As early at 1924 Ben-Gurion was trying to get more skilled immigrants to Israel. He felt that the only way was to get the Hehalutz to work hand in hand with the trade unions and to promote all that they were doing for workers in Palestine. Ben-Gurion in this letter is emphasizing his desire to see that the two the pioneers in Palestine and those abroad who were to help train skilled workers and promote the Histadrut work together to form a state that could be independent. Ben-Gurion a major Zionist leader led the Jewish community in Palestine on its struggle for an independent Jewish state. unknown books‎

‎Ben Gurion David‎

‎Ben Gurion Writes 4 Days After The 1942 The Biltmore Conference a turning point in the creation of Israel as it demanded that Palestine should serve as a Jewish State‎

‎The first prime minister of Israel and its leading personality during the first 15 years of the Jewish state. Typed Letter Signed 1 page Letter is written while Ben - Gurion is head of The Jewish Agency and written 4 days after the "Biltmore Conference". The Biltmore Conference was called was held from May 6 to May 11 1942 in the Biltmore Hotel in New York City. Ben-Gurion helped secure the adoption of the Biltmore Program which called for fulfillment of the Balfour Declaration and urged the establishment of Palestine as a Jewish commonwealth. This conference was called at the initiative of Ben-Gurion who had come to solicit the support of American Jews. Ben-Gurion was determined to seek a resolution that Jewish immigration to Palestine and the establishment of a Jewish state would proceed despite British opposition. Weizmann who objected to the idea of severing ties with Britain was outflanked at the conference. The Biltmore Program adopted at the conference and approved by the Zionist General Council in November 1942 called for unlimited Jewish immigration to Palestine and control of immigration by the Jewish commonwealth. TLS dated May 19 1942 5 x 8" on The Winthrop letterhead. Ben-Gurion writes "Thank you so much for your message of sympathy. With kind regards " Signed "D. Ben - Gurion". The Biltmore Conference was a turning point in the creation of Israel as it marked the turning away from British policies toward America as a main ally and it demanded unrestricted Jewish immigration to Palestine and that Palestine should serve as a Jewish State. unknown books‎

‎Ben-Gurion Mentions Trumpeldor: Israel’s Most Famous Military Hero‎

‎<p><b>BEN-GURION DAVID.</b> 1886-1973. Polish-born Israeli statesman who became Israel's first prime minister after proclaiming its independence in 1948. ALS. <i>"D. Ben Gurion"</i>. 1p. Postcard. Jerusalem March 6 1955. To Israeli historian and politician <b>BEN-ZION DINUR</b> 1884-1973. In Hebrew with translation. The postcard bears a postal cancellation that commemorates the 40th anniversary of the formation of Trumpeldor's famous Zionist Mule Corps.</p><p><i>"On the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of the 'Zionist Mule Corps' by Joseph Trumpeldor and his friends the youth should know more about the personal example set by the members of the Second Aliyah whose actions and heroism have become the personal educator of the people…"</i></p><p>An early Zionist Ben-Gurion moved to Palestine in 1906 to take up farming. Following his expulsion by Turkey at the outbreak of World War I he rallied British and American support to promote increased Jewish immigration to Palestine and after spending decades strengthening Palestine's Jewish community Ben-Gurion proclaimed the birth of Israel on May 14 1948. He assisted in creating the Israeli army often using military force to thwart Arab violence. After announcing his intention to leave public life Ben-Gurion moved to the newly founded Negev Kibbutz Sde-Boker in early 1954. He never completely abdicated his leadership role however and in February 1955 Ben-Gurion returned to public life first as minister of defense in which capacity he penned our letter. Following his tenure as defense minister he was reelected prime minister in November 1955.</p><p>Born in Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus <b>Joseph Trumpeldor</b> 1880-1920 abandoned his training as a dentist to join the Russian army in 1902 losing an arm during the Russo-Japanese War. He returned to active duty as quickly as possible but was taken prisoner by the Japanese. After regaining his freedom he became the most decorated Jewish soldier in the Russian army and the first Jew to be offered an officer's commission. However because of his disability Trumpeldor resigned from the military to study law. Increasingly interested in Zionism's goal of establishing a Jewish homeland Trumpeldor immigrated to Palestine Erez Israel in 1911 then part of the Ottoman Empire where he lived and worked on several collective farms while helping defend Jewish settlements in the Lower Galilee. </p><p>With the outbreak of World War I in 1914 the Russian-born Trumpeldor became an enemy alien in Ottoman Palestine and was deported to Egypt where he organized his fellow deportees into a military organization created to assist the British liberation of Palestine from the Ottomans. In 1915 Trumpeldor established the Zion Mule Corps or Jewish Legion part of the 38th and 42nd Battalions of Royal Fusiliers and the subject of our letter. Most of the Jewish volunteers were sent to the Dardanelles during the Gallipoli Campaign where they fought heroically against the Turks. They returned to Egypt and the corps disbanded in 1916. </p><p>By 1919 Trumpeldor had returned to Palestine where he was instrumental in the immigration of Russian-Jewish soldiers to British-occupied Palestine. On March 1 1920 the Jewish farming village of Tel Hai in the Upper Galilee's Hulah Valley came under attack by Shiite gangs from neighboring Lebanon who were searching for French soldiers. Anticipating trouble a militia led by Trumpeldor and organized by the Jewish defense organization Hashomer arrived and a skirmish broke out resulting in a number of casualties on both sides including the fatally-wounded Trumpeldor who had been shot in the stomach. His last words were reported to have been "Never mind it is good to die for our country" "<i>Ein davar</i><i> </i><i>tov lamut be'ad</i>artzeinu" an expression that became as famous as Nathan Hale's "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Trumpeldor remains to this day one of Israel's greatest military heroes. </p><p>Born in the Russian Empire Dinur became involved in Zionist activities around the turn of the century. He immigrated to Palestine in 1921 where he continued his academic career as a scholar of Jewish history. At the time of our letter Dinur was a professor at Hebrew University as well as a member of the Knesset and Minister of Education and Culture succeeding Ben-Gurion in that post and serving from October 1951 until November 1955. </p><p>Written on an Israel Post postcard bearing a March 8 1955 Jerusalem post mark and a second ink postal cancellation in Hebrew and English commemorating the Zion Mule Corps. ‎Ben Gurion David‎

‎David Ben-Gurion Autograph Letter Signed.‎

‎1965. Autograph letter signed by and entirely in the hand of the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. One page text in Hebrew addressed to Eliahu Eliachar a notable Sephardic Zionist and Member of the Knesset the letter reads in full "Greetings We don't need separate political lists - not those of independent Yemenite or Sephardic political parties. Those lists can only distort/falsify the democratic process in our country and the process of integration as well. We need only Israeli lists. Too many small political groups can only affect our stability. The only way to resolve it is to change our voting system from relative voting to local voting. With great respect D. Ben-Gurion." One of Ben-Gurion's most ambitious goals in the first years of statehood was the unrestricted absorption of entire communities of newly-arrived Middle Eastern and North African Jews into the Ashkenazi-dominated Israeli society. Hundreds of thousands of new immigrants fled the inhospitable environment rising in the Islamic countries between 1948 and 1954 in the wake of the burgeoning Arab-Israeli conflict settling in the economically-ravaged war-torn state. Other European Jewish communities from Bulgaria Romania and Poland were also transplanted to the Jewish State where they were forced to reside in transit villages and immigrants camps and became involved in domestic political in-fighting and became vulnerable to enticements from anti-establishment political groupings. Ben-Gurion feared that the plethora of small political parties could potentially destabilize Israel's precarious democracy and advocated for a radical change in Israels electoral system with a two-party governing system as opposed to the European proportional representational system. Above all Ben-Gurion advocated for the swift unification of the numerous ethnic groups and the creation of an integrated singular Israeli identity. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable offering a unique glimpse into the great leader's political thought. David Ben-Gurion was the primary founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. Ben-Gurion's passion for Zionism which began early in life led him to become a major Zionist leader and Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization in 1946. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935 and later president of the Jewish Agency Executive he was the de facto leader of the Jewish community in Palestine and largely led its struggle for an independent Jewish state in Mandatory Palestine. On 14 May 1948 he formally proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel and was the first to sign the Israeli Declaration of Independence which he had helped to write. Ben-Gurion led Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and united the various Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces. Subsequently he became known as "Israel's founding father." unknown books‎

‎David Ben-Gurion Autograph Letter Signed.‎

‎1965. Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. Addressed to Dr. Martin Rywell editor of Listen Magazine published in Harriman Tennessee the letter reads "Sdeh. Boker 22.6.65 Dear Dr. Martin Rywell Only the first part of the story you mention in your letter is true. I visited Burma in 1961. I met Prime Minister U Nu. We discussed Buddhism but the story about "a trick" is a pure invention. D. Ben-Gurion." The letter refers to Ben Gurion's two-week sojourn to Burma in 1961 which marked one of the longest official trips abroad for an Israeli prime minister. The first prime minister of Burma known honorifically as U Nu was a major figure among leaders of non-Western countries in the mid 20th century many of which had opposed Israel's establishment. In 1955 U Nu became the first foreign prime minister to visit the Jewish state a highly significant act of support which encouraged a mutually beneficial relationship between the two young governments. Double matted and framed with a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 15 inches. Rare and desirable. ‎David Ben-Gurion Autographed Letter Signed.‎

‎1970. Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. It reads "Sdeh. Boker 28. 2. 70 Dear Mr. George P. Viegelmann Jr. I share entirely your view that it is vitally necessary for everyone in the Middle East to live in peace. I am expressing a private view: I would be ready to give up a great Part of the areas which we hold since the six day war if this would bring peace; by peace I mean friendship with our Arab neighbors and cooperation politically economically and culturally but perhaps only Russia can bring this about. I even doubt whether the American Gov. can achieve that. In the future there may be a change in Egypt. David Ben-Gurion." This letter is a very unique piece of history particularly in regards to Israeli-Arab relations and the study of peace in general. While publicly Ben-Gurion was the undoubted leader in Zionism privately at the end of his life he began to have other opinions. He desired peace even if it meant giving up land that they had fought to obtain. Ben-Gurion's thoughts on peace in his latter years is corroborated by the recent documentary Ben-Gurion Epilogue. This movie features footage that was taken in 1968 and only recently discovered. In the footage he explains that Israel's moral compass was inexorably tied to its treatment of the non-Jews living under its rule. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 16.5 inches. David Ben-Gurion was the primary founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. ‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎No Binding. Very Good. Typed letter in Hebrew signed "D. Ben-Gurion" as Minister of Defense on State of Israel letterhead one page 6" x 8" August 26 1955. Translation of the Hebrew text: "I have no doubt that the problem of security disturbs your rest. True the problem of security at this time is the principal problem of the State. Any person - just like an entire nation - can feel the danger waiting at his door. We are a small nation and any boasting we do will only make a laughingstock out of us. But we are not powerless not in the military sense and certainly not in the moral and political sense. I however am calm and certain that when it comes to the test the Israel Defense Forces will be able to defend our peace and our sovereignty - the Israel Defense Forces is the army of the people and of all its circles and factions." File holes along right margin otherwise fine condition. A dramatic letter with excellent content from the first Prime Minister of Israel. unknown books‎
