Japanese title-page and 37 card leaves comprising 29 mounted monochrome sheets and eight colour lithographs all facsimile reproductions of the 1919 edition. The translation into Japanese is in a booklet at the rear. It is sometimes stated that this is in fact a reissue of the original Folkwang sheets which had somehow been transported to Japan but it has been established that there is some variation in dimensions and therefore these are in fact lithographic reproductions of a very high quality. Utopian visions of fantasy crystalline constructions. In the mid-thirties Taut in exile from Nazi Germany spent a few years in Takasaki where he wrote extensively on Japanese architecture and culture. He compared the historical simplicity of Japanese architecture with the modernist style. Near fine in very good indeed dustwrapper printed in Japanese with a tear to the front flap. Scarce especially in such brilliant condition.Offered with: the other four volumes of the Collected Works of Bruno Taut published simultaneously with the above but in a different format octavo: very good set in card slipcases. An impressive archive of albums filled with 476 photographs primarily albumen by such photographers as Epse Boddez-Rau Guillaume Brunskill Eugene Constant Francis Frith Gustave Hermans Arlo Naya J. Kuhn Carl Norman the Pettitt brothers Poulton J. Valentine G.W. Wilson and Zazzarini. These exceptional images many of them quite large document the travels and artistic interests of Warren Green. Beginning in the early 1880’s while serving as apprentice for the family printing firm The American Bank Note Company and studying with Parisian artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau he traveled extensively through Great Britain Belgium Germany Switzerland Ireland Italy Norway and South Africa. This exceptional group of photo albums offer an exceptional array of 19th-Century albumen images depicting a fin-de-siecle Europe on the cusp of modernity as revealed by many noted photographers. Unlike most “Grand Tour†albums reflecting one vacation swing through Europe young Green’s albums show years of interest and travel throughout Europe while studying art architecture and lithography at the behest of his uncle James Macdonough President of the storied American Bank Note Company based in New York. He apprenticed with the printing firm and was a pupil of William-Adolphe Bouguereau 1825-1905 under whose tutelage he appears to have worked on landscape and architectural renderings as shown by the few specimens mounted in the first volume including a pencil rendering of a half-timber Tudor home watercolour of the Blewbury Vicarage as well as pencil drawings of the Gosforth Cross in St. Mary’s Churchyard dating to the 10th Century; another of stone plinths with Norman cross shafts at Beckermet near the old St. Bridge’s Church and finally Kirk Fell from Wasdale Head. Also present are many different albumen photographs some with ferns & other botanical samples mounted alongside including Ennerdale Lake & Angler’s Crag Frith’s Windermere from the Summit Caniston & Old Man Crieff from Knockmary and more images by James Valentine and George Washington Wilson G.W. Wilson. He collected many loose albumen photos shot around Anvers by Gustave Hermans; others of pieces of sculpture by Guillaume large images of the Sistine Chapel as well as Edinburgh’s Canongate York Minster Abbotsford Rosslyn Chapel Ely Cathedral Choir Melrose Abbey and others by Valentine; views around Ghent Bruges & Brussels with streetcars cathedrals town squares and even to images of the Exposition d’Unvierselle in 1889. Switzerland is well represented in Vol. III including photos of the Breithorn Luzern Simplonstrasse St. Moritz the Maloja Palace Kursal designed by Belgian architects Kuoni & Jules Ran in Neo-Renaissance style the Morteratsch Glacier Swiss Alpine climbers and more. Holdovers and influences from the Gothic Revival movement are shown in Vol. IV photos of the St. Martin’s church Brighton whose interior was a reinterpretation of the 13th Century and whose altar would later be replaced in 1949 as well as a myriad of views of Salisbury Cathedral Lincoln Cathedral St. Joseph’s Chapel Glastonbury Durham Cathedral Ely Cathedral the Hotels de Ville in Antwerp & Ghent and more. Of interest are the series of images taken in Ireland including the Killarney the Old Weir Bridge Ross Castle Muckross Abey the Gap of Dunloe Killarney followed by a boat trip down the Rhine. The fifth album devoted exclusively to albumen photos of Venice Italy includes a number of hand-coloured examples mostly likely taken by J. Kuhn whose Compagnie Photographique was located in Paris on Rue de Rivoli or Carlo Naya both of whom often marked their images on versos. Albumen photos of the Grand Canal Riva degli Shiavoni the promenade on the basin of San Marco San Marco cathedral Palazzo ducale the famed Ponte dei Sospiri ond the Ponte di Rialto are all hand-coloured and there are also well-executed photos of many other sites around Venice. Volume VI is of particular interest encompassing a panoply of views from the Isle of Wight & Guernsey to the Cornish Coast & southern England along with significant portions devoted to South Africa and Norway. The views included of the Isle of Wight include Clarisbrooke Castle Totland Bay a rustic bridge built with antlers Tennyson’s Lane Freshwater and others. The photographer Carl Norman 1841-1927 is well represented with many fiews in and round Guernsey including Fermain Bay Couffre Harbour Saints Bay Valley of Petit Bot and others. Also present are large photos of gardens church and beaches at Felixstowe River Tamar & Cunislake Calstock Morwell Rocks Calstock Village on the River Tamar by Valentine and several photos by Samuel Poulton. These are followed by numerous views of South Africa sometime during the Boer War including the Wynberg Military Hospital structures and solider standing next to them the harbor Camp’s Bay Cape Town Dutch Reformed Church Dutch Reformed Church Wesleyan Church Batt’s Wood Mission Hall as well as Greenmarket Square Norman Arch and Medieval Arch in Cape Town. Frith’s Series views are well presented with images of the Cockington Village in Torquay Beaches Torquay the Rock Walk and many others. The album ends with images of a voyage on the RMS Viking a steamship operated by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company sometime about 1905-1910 featuring views along the Norangdal Road and Cliffs a Norwegian wedding party views of the Bondhusbreen glacier in Westland County villagers taking in hay and several of the tour troup with the Greens both onboard ship and excursions onto the glaciers. Green 1866-1919 was the son of Frank Green b. 1831 manufacturer of gas fixtures & lighting on Long Island and Antoinette Luqueer Macdounough Green who became a noted lithographer printer and finally sales manager and president of The American Bank Note Company. After marrying Jeanne Marguerite Thierry while living in Paris in 1891 he became a junior salesman and quickly rose to manage the Canadian Branch of the Company in Ottawa until 1901 when he was recalled to New York. He oversaw a significant expansion of the Company and was instrumental in the construction of the American Bank Note Company Printing Plant building still existing on Lafayette Ave. Hunts Point the Bronx designed by Kirby Petit & Green. The American Bank Note Company was officially organized under that name in 1858 but actually founded in 1809 as Murray Draper & Farman. Until the formation of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington D.C. all State and National Bank Notes as well as postage stamps were printed by The American or its subsidiary companies. They also printed many stamps and currencies in other countries as well as operated an extensive engraving and lithography operation. An incomparable architectural photo album offers a time-lapse view of 92 silver gelatin images documenting the construction of the historic J.H. & C.K. Eagle Silk Mill in Shamokin Pennsylvania through 1916 which at 500000 square feet was the largest textile building under one room in America. In addition there are views of the construction of the Dye House Addition in 1924 as well as other silk factories.

Thick oblong folio. 16 x 11.5 in. 92 linen-backed silver gelatin photographs sized 10.5 x 13.75 in. all with photographer’s stamp on versos many w/ text within negative at lower fore-edge of image and nearly all dated all images w/ linen hinge at gutter margin. Recent simulated black calf post-binder gilt lettering on front cover brass screw-posts still excellent exemplar w/ NF bright images with strong sharp contrast. This extraordinary photo album provides an indispensable week-by-week visual historical record of the building of the famed J.H. & C.K. Eagle Mill silk mills located on the site of the old John Mullen Foundry in Shamokin Pennsylvania. Taking advantage of cheap coal fuel oil and the convenience of transportation via the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad routed through the town the two brothers decided they would finance and build the largest textile factory in America in Shamokin. They commissioned Wilson Jury 1866-1933 -- former fellow boarder of Charles Eagle -- as the architect and hired the Shamokin Lumber Company as the primary contractor. The company purchased raw silk in Japan & China and then shipped back to the U.S. in large quantities where the silk fibers were dyed soaked and spun and then the silk threads were churned out in large quantities from the Shamokin “Mill.†By the mid-1920s the plant employed over 3300 employees with a monthly payroll over $ 5 million. Following the first photograph of the architectural rendering for The Mill the album continues with images from March 1916 showing the site cleared views of nearby factories snow on the ground and the construction crews were setting the forms for the foundations and piers. The images show work crews preparing and pouring footings for the massive brick building in April 1916; the erection of the structural steel began at the end of April 1916 and by May 12 workers were installing decking. In June the album shows windows installed bricklayers & mason working their way around the factory on scaffolds following the rapid expansion of flooring and structural steel. In addition architectural elements such as the massive cement eagles overshadowing the doors are installed and the crews began construction of the massive Beaux-Arts inspired power plant. The photos show the towering smoke stack for the power plant under construction windows and brick facade being installed and finally at the end of Nov. 1916 the factory and power plant completed. A short series of photos also by Thomas show the step-by-step construction of the Eagle Silk Industrial Mill Dye House Addition on Walter Street directly across from “The Mill†followed by images of the Mills in Edgewood Rock Street the Throwing Plant Kulpmont Mill and the Treverton Mill. John Eagle 1868-1943 was a New York financier banker and big game hunter who took over the silk mills in Shamokin PA in 1896 to rescue them from financial ruin. Partnering with his younger brother Charles Eagle 1875-1928 they formed the J.H. & C.K. Eagle Textile Company which would operate successfully until filing for bankruptcy in July of 1937. The company was reorganized first as the Print & Dye Works which failed in 1942 during World War II and later became the Shamokin Realty Corp. leasing the monstrous Mill for decades. Thomas 1851-1940 operated his photography studio from 1876 through his retirement in 1929 and along with his Shamokin Studio operated commercial photography studios in Mount Carmel Ashland and Tamaqua PA specializing in publicity advertising and even later aerial photography. The photographer is perhaps best remembered for having taken Thomas Edison’s favorite studio portrait considered by Edison as the best ever taken of him. The first image documents the Glenwood School and its annex located at 2nd Ave. and Alluvian and constructed in 1888 in the Richardson Romanesque style with brick facade and updates in 1896 and again in 1916 and demolished after World War II. The next three photos show the different expansion projects for the Larimer School originally designed in the Richardson Romanesque style by Ulysses J. Lincoln Peoples and shows the excavation in 1918 for the addition and then the George Rowland 400 seat auditorium which featured a streamlined Art Deco exterior and was completed in 1932. There are two images showing the excavation and site preparation for the Greenfield School which was delayed by World War I and construction would not be restarted until 1922 and completed in 1923. In addition there are a trio of photographs showing the new building for the Gladstone Elementary School which would turn it into a Junior High School adding 14 classrooms two recreation rooms a swimming pool and two gyms. The building was recently sold by the Pittsburgh School District for $ 250000 to be converted into apartments. The last image shows the beginning construction work on what would eventually become the Taylor Allderdice High School located in Squirrel Hill in 1924. The Hall & Williams Studio would operate until 1947 and are best remembered for their architectural photos in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia PA.
