"They are made of artificial stone; the solid substance the heavy weight and the clean squareness of each block combine to make admirable building material." Astonishingly nothing is missing from this set including the original brochures. The box contains the elements to construct six different structures: A country house tower cottages garage library and parish hall. In short representatives of the most familiar buildings in an English village may be made. M. H. TILTON FURNITURE COMPANY
Lincoln Nebraska: 1927. Oblong folio 14.5" by 10.5" 221 pages bound in a scrap-book style similar to large fabric and wallpaper sample books. Maroon cloth over boards held together with brass screws. Trade catalogs of American furniture are far more difficult to find than house plans. It is most unusual to find one of this size with this range of items. Obviously intended to be used as a sample book by a retail establishment rather than as a promotional mailer to individuals. The book is organized in seven sections each with a heavy card cover sheet listing the category and page numbers of the section with printed tabs for easy reference. One of the tabs lists "Congoleum" but there is no material about the floor covering included and the page number has been left blank indicating that part of the catalog had yet to be printed rather than removed. There are the expected oversuffed chairs and turned spindle table legs.but a substantial portion of the sample book is dedicated to Arts and Crafts and Mission style. Of particular interest relating to bungalow decor are twenty-seven pages of "Fiber Reed Goods" featuring outstanding wickerwork furnishings and lamps for sunporches. The finishes available for these settles chairs swings lamp bases and shades et al are delectable. "Satin Finishes: Natural Fumed Nut Brown and Green" and "Enamel Finishes: Old Ivory Frosted Brown Frosted Mahogany Cafe au Lait Royal Blue Chinese Blue Bronze and Blue Bronze and Green Black and Gold and Verdi Copper." The last section of the book is dedicated primarily to "Baby Cabs" and Toys including wicker carriages and strollers. Fine illustrations of cycles metal cars wagons and scooters. The binding has quite a bit of staining and wear including some fraying of the cloth but both covers are complete and totally sound. The name of the firm is bright and clear against a background of metallic silver. The last reference tab is chipped and the others browned else the contents are fine. The M. H. Tilton Company founded in 1886 sold furniture and floor coverings to the trade from their location at 6th and L Streets Lincoln Nebraska. Large oblong folio 18 by 24 inches original blue paper wrappers original morocco portfolio with snap tab. $2500.First edition of this early guide to modernist architecture and design for retail profusely illustrated with drawings and diagrams.""In the early 1940s the Kawneer storefront company invited architects Ketchum Gina & Sharp to remodel a full block of old commercial buildings along main street in Niles Michigan home of the company's plant; this new architectural firm was not ashamed to incorporate bold graphics. Store after store received the open-front treatment in the firms 1944 proposal� Most of the storefront designs suggested a first story composed entirely of glass with either a side wall or ceiling plane projecting beyond this glazing like freestanding panels out over the sidewalk. Free-floating display cases some as low as coffee tables rested in the void between the sidewalk and entrance. New wall sign lettering significantly larger than the old and displaying great variety from business to business announced the purpose of this design approach: to be accessible appealing and profitable. These were machines for selling as the Kawneer ads for that year trumpeted. First edition of this beautifully printed work on Arts & Crafts ornament and decorations for churches at the beginning of the 20th Century by a noted New York designer of decorative sketches and manufacturer of stencils pounce tools and Vitrophane stained glass. These designs contain emblems corner pieces and breaks for ceilings Diaper “all over†patterns for chancel walls borders mosaic patterns classical and colonial designs. Mayhew fl. 1900-1906 was located at 44 W. 29th St. in 1904 when this book was issued according to contemporary advertisements in Painter & Decorator along with the Vitrophane Stained Glass sample catalogue and later moved to 56 W. 31st St. by 1906. No date. Ca. 1883. 30 black and white plates sheet size approximately 11 3/8 x 14 5/8 inches loose in 15 1/4 x 11 3/4 inch cloth covered board portfolio with cloth ties. A scarce publication the Plates portfolio is in very good condition discolored streak to front of portfolio; only one of three tie clasps serviceable while the plates themselves are overall in excellent condition with the slightest toning to edges first plate has light edge wear. Thirty plates to illustrate the concepts outlined in William Ware’s famous "Modern Perspective: A Treatise upon the Principles and Practice of Plane and Cylindrical Perspective" copyright 1882. In the preface Ware of Columbia University writes: "A new treatment of so old a theme would be uncalled for did not even the elaborate treatises seem to be deficient in comprehensiveness and scientific simplicity while the practical handbooks fail to make the reader acquainted with some methods that are found in experience to be among the most convenient and practical of all."
