‎Summary The volume offers the first critical edition of the medieval Latin translation of Aristotle's Physiognomonica. This treatise, nowadays considered pseudo-Aristotelian, is translated into Latin between 1258 and 1266 by Bartholomew of Messina and deals with physiognomy, a discipline which connects outward appearance and inward character traits. The translation received wide circulation at the University of Paris by means of several exemplaria. The Physiognomonica has survived in 128 manuscripts, which makes it Bartholomew's most diffused translation. The introduction of the volume first discusses the text and manuscript tradition and then the relation to the Greek model. It appears that the Latin translation contains a unique version of the text compared to the extant Greek manuscripts, which makes it an important witness for the Greek tradition as well. ‎Roelant Savery (1578-1639) belonged to the large group of Flemish artists who ended up in the Northern Netherlands around 1600, during the 80 Years' War. There they stood at the cradle of the great flowering of art in the seventeenth century. Savery was a very versatile draftsman and painter, specialized in landscapes, animal pieces and floral still lifes. He depicted countless different species with encyclopedic precision: animals, flowers but also people from various regions, from Bohemian farmers to Jewish worshipers in the synagogue. Savery became the painter of the extinct dodo from Mauritius. For more than ten years, Savery worked in the service of the Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, who sent him to document the landscapes and people of his empire. Originating from the Low Countries, the waterfalls in the Alps must have made a deep impression on the artist. After returning to the Netherlands, Roelant Savery settled in Utrecht, where he created a garden behind his house with precious flowers and plants. This way he did not have to leave home to find inspiration for his flower still lifes.‎

‎Summary Roman Imperial denarii from the first-third cen turies AD are, almost without exception, the most common ancient coinage to be found in Central, Northern, and Eastern Europe beyond the Roman limes. Perhaps surprisingly, however, a signifi cant percentage of these coins are in fact coun terfeit, comprised largely of denarii subaerati (plated denarii, fourr es) and denarii flati (base-metal cast copies). Moreover, these fake coins were not only manufactured by Romans them selves, but also by barbarian peoples in Eastern Europe, far from the Roman limes, in what should be considered a mass-scale phenomena. This volume draws together archaeologi cal, numismatic, and historical research in order to offer a new assessment of the production and use of counterfeit Roman Imperial denarii both within the European provinces of the Roman Empire and in European Barbaricum. Drawing on the results of the research project Barbarian Fakers. Bacon portrayed the ordeal of the vulnerable, defencelessly exposed body like no other artist of his generation. His individuals are usually alone, isolated from their surroundings, trapped in empty, windowless rooms or behind the bars of cages. Bacon?s figures act on stage-like platforms, doubled over in torment, sliding into formlessness. By wiping, scratching and erasures, Bacon converted the picture surface into a field of perpetual activity ? and in the process, created images of great forcefulness, sensibility and beauty. Bacon found his models not only in the history of art, but also in photographs of athletes, soccer players, or boxers in combat. He also betrayed a strong interest in the photographic sequences through which Eadweard Muybridge, in the later 19th century, registered the phases of a path of animal movement. Such instinctively performed motions disclosed to Bacon actions of an original sensuality which he strove to capture in his pictures.‎
