‎Het is een oude fantasie: dat wij op een dag even lles zouden kunnen vernemen wat zich in de hoofden van de anderen afspeelt. Als in een soort collectieve openbaring. Alle maskers af. Enerzijds denk ik, laten we hopen dat die fantasie nooit werkelijkheid wordt; we zouden het niet overleven. Anderzijds, misschien net wel. Eindelijk zouden al die duistere hoofden eens gelucht zijn. En zouden we vaststellen dat we dit natuurlijk wel wisten, dat wij inderdaad darkrooms zijn. Ik gebruik het woord darkroom niet zomaar. Ook dat kwam in me op bij het werk van Serneels. Jaar na jaar, jarenlang, heeft die het dagboek van zijn hoofd bijgehouden. Althans, zo kunnen we het zien. Vanzelfsprekend zijn deze schetsen, dit dagboek, niet zomaar een verslag van het zichtbare, herkenbare dagelijkse bestaan. Veeleer zie ik een kroniek van het nzichtbare dagelijkse bestaan. En ook, en vooral, zie ik hoe het onderscheid tussen die twee, het dagelijks zichtbare en het onzichtbare, dat ik hier nu zo schijnbaar vanzelfsprekend aanbreng, in deze schetsen oplost. En tegelijk verschijnt uiteraard.‎

‎Theo Van Rysselberghe (1862-1926) is one of the emblematic figures of Neo-Impressionism, together with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. With his delicate touch, refined chromatic sense and great elegance, above all in his portraits, he produced some of the finest works of divisionism. Yet Van Rysselberghes oeuvre is not limited to the works of his Neo-Impressionist period (1888-96), even though it is for these that he is best known internationally. Distancing himself from the strict division of colours, he subsequently moved towards a more fluid style, though always retaining great luminosity. His portraits and female nudes, the landscapes he brought back from his numerous trips (Morocco, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands) reveal insatiable curiosity and immense talent, coupled with rare sensibility. This catalogue presents a large number of works shown for the first time in public. Theo van Rysselberghes fascinating and unusually extensive correspondence has served as a point of departure for a number of the contributions to this publication. ‎Summary This volume offers the first modern edition and study of the liturgical writings of Bern, abbot of Reichenau (d. 1048). Dealing with some of the more ordinary questions facing medieval worshipping communities - such as how to find the correct date for Advent Sunday, or how to be sure that a text is liturgically or doctrinally appropriate - Bern's four tractates provide rare first-hand insights into the practices, problems and perceptions of Christian liturgy in the early years of the second millennium. Formerly attributed to Bern, a fifth work (Ratio generalis de initio Aduentus) is shown to be one of his sources and is edited in an appendix. Unlike formal liturgical expositions, Bern's writings were devoted to alleviating specific concerns, often at the request of specific people. However, the author also believed strongly in the potential of his reasoning to draw together the Christian community at large. As such, these writings are assiduously argued and researched, reaching their conclusions with the author's characteristically broad weave of citation, interpretation and anecdote. With implications liturgical, intellectual and political, the tractates are fertile sources not only for scholars of religion, but also for musicologists and medieval historians. In an extensive introduction the editor addresses longstanding questions about the shape, extent and internal coherence of Bern's liturgical oeuvre, aided by two recently rediscovered manuscripts. ‎Walter Swennen is a painter, born in Brussels in 1946. Like others of his generation, he approaches and explores the medium in new ways by applying principles from other disciplines. Swennen's work constantly challenges the viewer. His paintings demand slow and careful inspection. The layers of paint often hide a veritable battlefield of attempts, corrections, words and messages. His Dutch-speaking family suddenly began speaking French when he was five years old, and language games accordingly form an integral part of his art. A painting by Walter Swennen is not just a result, but also a process, which allows us to trace the path taken by the artist to achieve the ultimate 'visible' image. A key constant is the pleasure he derives from the battle with the paint. Non-conformist that he is, Swennen paints on anything: from canvas to wood to discarded camping tables, stoves and even washing machines. Walter Swennen's long and varied career deserves to be recognised by a wide public for its radical nonconformism and the influence that the artist still exerts on young artists today. Swennen is represented by the Brussels Xavier Hufkens Gallery and the Gladstone Gallery in New York, and won the prestigious Ultima award for lifetime services to the visual arts in 2019. His work can be found in numerous museum and gallery collections. This book offers a wonderful overview of his oeuvre and is the catalogue to an international solo exhibition which launches in Kunstmuseum Bonn (June-August 2021) before travelling to Kunstmuseum Den Haag (autumn 2021) and Kunstmuseum Winterthur (spring 2022).
