Dustjacket has edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small closed tears along bottom edge. ; The Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome Volume XXXVII; 431 pages; Cosa was a Latin colonia founded under Roman influence in southwestern Tuscany in 273 BC, perhaps on land confiscated from the Etruscans. One of the last textual references to Cosa comes from the work of Rutilius Claudius Namatianus in his De reditu suo. In the passage 1.285-90, Rutilius remarks that by 416 the site of Cosa was deserted and could be seen to be in ruins. In the 20th century, Cosa was the site of excavations carried out under the auspices of the American Academy in Rome, initially under the direction of the archaeologist Frank Edward Brown. Excavations (1948-54, 1965-72) have traced the city plan, the principal buildings, the port, and have uncovered the Arx, the forum, and a number of houses. Unexcavated buildings include a bathing establishment, but no trace of a theater or an amphitheater has been found. In the 1990s a limited series of excavations were carried out under the direction of Elizabeth Fentress, then associated with the American Academy in Rome. This latter campaign aimed at understanding the history of the site between the imperial period and the middle agest. Sample excavations took place over the whole site, with larger excavations on the Arx, the Eastern Height and around the Forum.

Consists of two unpaginated parts bound in one cirlox-bound volume. Part 1 consists of 100 one-sided pages encompassing the textual component of the report, supplemented with occasional diagrams of roundhouse layouts and photocopies of photos. The report is divided into: Introduction; The Building, its Elements, Materials and Construction; Roundhouse Memorabilia; and Conclusions, plus a bibliography. The heart of the report lies in the Memorabilia section which provides historical and diagrammatic information about the roundhouses at North Bend, Revelstoke, Field, Cranbrook, Nelson, Trail, Penticton, Coquitlam, Vancouver, and Victoria. Part 2 consists of approximately 75 one-sided pages of black and white photocopied reproductions of photos of roundhouses from across British Columbia. Average wear. Unmarked. A sound copy. Presumably most, if not all, the roundhouses documented here have since been demolished, thus this report, prepared by students of the UBC School of Architecture, serves as an important historical and architectural record. Issued (by subscription). Sixty original parts. Complete. Magazine-format. Large 8vo. 195 x 270 mm. Numerous woodcut illustrations. This set is generally in wonderful condition. A great monument to the variety of lands in the British Victorian Empire. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal (mainly in the 19th century) over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at 6 pence or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. They also qualified for mailing at a cheaper rate. Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser, very few have survived into our present era. The first guide to Browsholme Hall and one of the rarest and finest of the genre. The guide was compiled by Thomas Lister Parker and "privately printed by the author for distribution among his friends. The sale was afterwards limited to 100 copies."?Upcott, p. 1410. The next historical guide was written by Colonel Robert Parker in 1957 when Browsholme Hall was opened to the public. Thomas Lister Parker (1779?1858) was born at Browsholme Hall and obtained possession of the family estate as soon as he came of age at the age of twenty-one. "He went on his grand tour in 1800, visiting France, Italy, and Russia, and returned home in 1801 with a collection of paintings, drawings, and prints. In 1805?7 he altered the sixteenth-century Browsholme Hall, using Jeffry Wyatt (later Sir Jeffry Wyatville) as architect to rebuild and extend the west wing: this provided a new drawing-room and dining-room, suitable for the display of his growing picture collection. Landscape gardening and forestry also engaged his interest. In the house he displayed a collection of antiquities, a feature of which was the creation of interiors evoking Browsholme's mainly Jacobethan past."?(Oxford DNB). Boyne CXCI; Upcott, pp. 1408-10.
