‎This book offers an elaborative examination of Aubin-Louis Millin?s Antiquites Nationales, a collection of dissertations describing the history of individual buildings and monuments that were threatened by vandalism during the early years of the French Revolution. Cet ouvrage a gagne la premiere medaille du concours des Antiquites de la France (avril 2014). This is the story of a book, a book about a book. The Antiquites nationales constitute, to say the least, an enigmatic publication. Written at the time of the French Revolution, by an author who had until then been known principally for his works on natural history, it is a book about which very little is known. A series of sixty-one dissertations of varying lengths, gathered into five volumes, describes and relates the history of individual buildings or monuments which were, according to the author, threatened by the waves of vandalism occurring in France during the early years of the French Revolution. Neither the circumstances of the book?s writing nor of its printing and marketing are easily elucidated, and the very form in which it was issued is one that requires careful investigation by a bibliographer. A careful collation of the Antiquites reveals that the traditional book form was subtly modified in an attempt to allow readers better to appropriate it for themselves. Amongst the more intriguing aspects of this book is the story of its reception. Hailed at the time of its publication as being a work of the greatest importance which should find a place in every library, the Antiquites very quickly fell from public favour. By now, it is generally familiar only to those engaged in research on the history of French architectural heritage or who are trying to find engravings illustrating a building at the time of the Revolution or before.‎

‎Summary The work of the fifteenth-century Italian painter Pisanello has long proven resistant the interpretative procedures of art history, in ways that point to the limits of those procedures as they evolved in the period after the Second World War. Taking Pisanello's art as an example of a larger theoretical issue, the book proposes a model of interpretation that addresses the realm of imitative practice. Using Cennino Cennini's Il Libro del' Arte as a primer,the author argues for an approach that confronts the evidence of the artist's self-tempering work, and then tests that model through an examination of Pisanello's drawings and medals. She exposes the drawings as primary evidence of the ontological groundwork within which the painter finds his own habits of invention, and also demonstrates the value of looking for the groundwork in a selection of Pisanello's official works, including the surviving wall paintings in Veronese churches. In the end, the author contends that the self-reflexive recognition of creative agency is a prerequisite for the apprehension of Pisanello's art, especially the agonistic scenario staged in his panel of The Virgin and Child with Saints George and Anthony and its enigmatic signature. ‎La Salle aux Tresors du Musee du Cinquantenaire presente des oeuvres medievales comptant parmi les plus belles, les plus precieuses et les plus rares conservees aux Musees Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire. Nombreuses sont les pieces qui proviennent de tresors d'eglise comme celui de Tongres ou de Maastricht. L'art Mosan, qui fut florissant entre 950 et 1250 et dont le musee possede une collection mondialement reputee, constitue la base de cette collection. Celle-ci rassemble, en effet, un ensemble unique de pieces d'orfevrerie, de sculptures polychromes et d'ivoires precieux. L'art Mosan, comme son nom l'indique, est originaire de la vallee de la Meuse: les centres principaux furent Liege, Aix-la-Chapelle, Maastricht, Cologne et Stavelot. Il fut fortement influence par les styles carolingien, ottonien, byzantin et antique et fut particulierement florissant aux XIIe et XIIIe siecles. Les pieces principales sont, sans aucun doute, le chef reliquaire du Pape Alexandre, date de 1145, et le superbe autel portatif de Stavelot de 1160 environ. Ce dernier est decore de scenes de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament. Ce sont des reliquaires de grande valeur realises, en cuivre et en argent dore, en laiton, ornes de pierres precieuses et emaux. Le culte des reliques etait particulierement developpe au Moyen Age. Pour transporter et conserver celles-ci, les orfevres de l'epoque ont realise des coffrets, des croix ou des reliquaires somptueux. Leur conservation a exige l'amenagement de salles aux tresors ou de sanctuaires dans les eglises. Les deux plats de reliure en ivoire de Genoels-Elderen, uniques et celebres dans le monde entier, datent du VIIIe siecle. Des tissus precieux, comme l'Antependium de Rupertsberg de 1230, font partie de l'ensemble: la soie rouge sert de support a une representation d'Hildegarde de Bingen, resplendissante de beaute.‎
