‎Summary Through the word corpus, the metaphor of the body is applied to a collection of works by the same author that are transmitted together. These works not only share the same skin, the manuscript, but also function organically thanks to a complex system of paracontents. It is possible to see this system at work in the case of only a very few medieval authors throughout history, cultures and languages; the Corpus Nazianzenum and the Corpus Dionysiacum are such instances. Both Gregory of Nazianzus and Dionysius the Areopagite are super-authors, who forged their own literary identity as much as they shaped the body of their writings. This sets both corpora apart from other collections of patristic works. They are also exceptional because of the large scale and enduring character of their cultural impact in the different cultures in which the corpora were translated, commented and annotated. ‎Summary This book is the first comprehensive publication on Scottish portraiture from the period 1644 to 1714, with an emphasis on the painters David Scougall (1625-1685), and his son John Scougall (1657-1737). It is based on in-depth art historical and archival research. As such, it is an important academic contribution to this thus far little-researched field. Virtually nothing was known about the Scougall portraitists, who also include the somewhat obscure George Scougall (active c. 1690-1737). Thorough archival research has provided substantial biographical information. It has yielded life dates and data on family relations and, also, it has become clear that David Scougall had two parallel careers, as a portrait painter and as a writer (solicitor). The legal community in which the Scougalls were embedded has been defined, as well as an extended group of sitters and their social, economic, and family networks. The book includes a catalogue raisonn of the oeuvre of David Scougall. The most important contemporaries of the Scougalls were the portraitist L. Sch neman (active c. 1655/60-1667 or slightly later), his successor James Carrudus (active c. 1668-1683 or later), whose work is identified for the first time in this book, David Paton (c. 1650-in or after 1708), Jacob Jacobsz. de Wet (1641/42-1697) and Sir John Baptist Medina (1659-1710). Their lives and work are discussed. An extensive survey of Scottish portraits, with an emphasis on the work of the Scougall painters, is presented for the period 1644 to 1714. Numerous attributions to various artists and sitter identifications have been established or revised. An overview of the next generation is provided, in which the oeuvres and biographical details are highlighted of the principal portrait painters, such as William Aikman (1682-1731), Richard Waitt (1684-1733) and John Alexander (1686-1767). Countless paintings have been photographed anew or for the first time, and have been compared in detail, which had hardly been done before, while information is also included on technical aspects and (original) frames. The resulting data have been complemented by analysing the social and (art-) historical context in which the portraits were made. ‎Summary The chronicle of Henry of Livonia has long been recognized as the single most important source on the early history of Livonia and Estonia in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The chronicler describes in great detail how the people of the region were subjected to intense campaigns of crusading and mission from the 1180s until the 1220s, primarily at the hands of ecclesiastical and secular powers of Northern Germany (Saxony), Denmark and Sweden. The chronicler himself, a German cleric named Henry (Henricus), was not only active in recording the events that happened around him. He also took a very active role as a missionary and interpreter among the indigenous population as well as joining the armies of crusaders on campaign, making this chronicle both a first-hand account and a very intriguing narrative. Papal missionary politics and theological ideas are intermingled in the chronicle with detailed descriptions of military campaigns, raids and sieges, making the entire chronicle a fascinating read. The aim of this book is to clarify the ways in which Henry construes the historical events that he describes, portraying them as the continuation of a form of sacred history that was initiated by God in biblical times and continued by clerics and crusaders among Henry's own peers. ‎L'exposition Zulma, muse et manageuse, constitue un ultime hommage cette femme exceptionnelle, qui fut non seulement la muse de Roger Raveel, mais aussi sa manageuse avant la lettre. Son nom restera jamais li l'oeuvre de cet artiste unique. Bref, sans Zulma, pas de Roger Raveel, ni de Mus e Roger Raveel. La l gende veut qu'aux c t s de chaque artiste important se tienne une femme: Georgette aux c t s de Ren Magritte, Nel de Rik Wouters, Gusta de Gustave De Smet et Marthe de Pierre Bonnard. Zulma tait la femme aux c t s de Roger Raveel. Zulma De Nijs tait tout pour Raveel. Ou, comme l'a dit Hugo Claus dans le vers de son po me Voor de poort [Devant le portail]: " tre pr sente, c'est suffisant". Et elle l'a t , tant dans la vie que dans l'oeuvre de l'artiste. D s les premi res oeuvres de Raveel, on la reconna t clairement. C'est elle qui a pos pour des tableaux d sormais classiques tels que Femme au bras rouge (1949), Femme au revolver (1950) ou Femme au miroir (1953). M me dans les oeuvres produites par la suite, il est difficile de savoir combien de fois Raveel l'a repr sent e, de face ou de dos, dans ses dessins, ses gravures et ses tableaux. Il n'y r fl chissait m me plus, tant c' tait une vidence. Il pouvait la portraiturer avec pr cision en un tour de main. Zulma assise la table, jouant aux cartes, faisant de mots crois s, la fen tre, regardant l'atelier, etc. Quasi toute son existence fut habit e par la pratique artistique de Raveel. Elle l'a toujours d fendu, a lutt ses d buts contre l'incompr hension de son oeuvre et n'a jamais h sit r primander certains critiques. Le temps - tous gards, le critique le plus fiable - lui a finalement donn raison.‎

Juan Caramuel de Lobkowitz (1606-1682) was a Spanish ecclesiastic scholar and architect, bishop of the Italian city of Vigevano since 1673. A poligrapher, he published more than 70 works on technics, science, philosophy, politics, mathematics and architecture: but the only constructions he realized and completed as an architect were the square and the façade of the cathedral, at Vigevano, where he was bishop from 1673 to his death. Born in Madrid, he was a precocious child and he completed his studies at the universities of Alcalà and Salamanca, in Spain. He became a Cistercensis monk and he was teacher at Lauven university, where he was also responsable for the military defense of the city. Then he moved to Prague, and in 1655 he moved to Italy: in 1657 he was the bishop of Satriano, and then of Vigevano, the city where he died in 1682. This rare book is the illustrated part (the plates) of Caramuel’s important work on civil architecture: as an architect, Caramuel was a strong substainer of the superiority of “oblique” architecture on the “straight” one (i.e. the Vitruvian): this book is considered the most ambitious Spanish architectural treatise to date. Author obsession with geometry and optical distortion was treated as an eccentric aptitude by the most of contemporaries: this work had a great impact in the New World, where Caramuel’s theories were spread by many scientists and the examples of “architectura obliqua” are numerous. The book begins with a “tratado proemial” on the Temple of Jerusalem (plates A-E); then we have 49 plates on the discussion of the sciences and techniques useful to architects and engineers; 65 plates illustrate either the ‘architectura recta’ or Caramuel’s improvements, and 41 plates explicate the laws or ‘architectura obliqua’: technics, architecture, mechanics and hydraulics are the main subjects of this book, the first of eight issued under the imprint “En la Emprenta Obispal por Camillo Corrado”: because of the late recognition of Caramuel’s relevance as a technics, mechanics and architecture scholar, the books were not widely distributed, and now are a notable rarity. The most of the engravings are by anonymous printmakers; on is signed by the Roman engraver Bernard Balliu (part 4, pl. 6), five by the milanese Giovanni Francesco Bugatti , seven by Cesare Laurentio and eleven by the Milanese Simone Durello. The late table on part III is not indexed and is manuscript numbered (it doesn’t appear in bibliographies).‎
