It states on the contrary that the political and economic rise of the bourgeoisie accounts for the decline of Latin in secondary education during the last two centuries. Although Latin kept its dominant position in the curriculums throughout the nineteenth century, its supremacy was increasingly challenged by certain exponents of the bourgeoisie, who demanded school learning to be more markedly connected to the professional world. Jan Spoelder, "The decline of Latin as the academic language at Dutch universities and its consequences for education in Latin" In the eighteenth century, Latin lost its status as the universal scholarly language in countries like France, Germany and Britain. ‎Summary This book collects papers presented at two multi-disciplinary gatherings which sought to examine concepts belonging to the semantic field of religious belief. The collection sets out from the observation that the relevant terms are ambiguous and equivocal, and indeed that this ambiguity persists in the scholarly literature in the humanities. It is therefore important to historicise these terms adequately and to clarify their development and transformation over time. This involves a sustained engagement with key discourses - logic, history of religion, epistemology, political history - of significant intellectual heterogeneity. Platonism fundamentally informs classical and patristic Christian reflections as well as the thought of their medieval heirs. It carries with it a tension between 'opinion' and supra-rational certitude which is exploited by Christian thinkers up to and including scholastic theologians. These thinkers insist above all on the existential dimension of a certitude which seeks to establish a privileged link with the divine. It involves the attempt to harmonise the ritual and social aspects of religious practice with the individual urge towards transcendence, a quest which has been bequeathed to modernity and still largely defines the nature of contemporary Western social engagement with religion. ‎Geert Bekaert (1928) is de meest productieve en gezaghebbende architectuurcriticus uit de twintigste eeuw in het Nederlandse taalgebied. Tegelijkertijd is hij een van de meest literaire publicisten. Door de brede interesse en methode van Bekaert, en door de gerichte thematische analyse van Van Gerrewey, biedt het tegelijk een overzicht op de debatten en de onderwerpen binnen de Belgische, Nederlandse en Europese architectuurcultuur sinds 1950. ‎Labyrinth takes us on a walk through the spaces constructed within the pages of the book and visualises a world in which the exit can?t be found. With the morphology of the house (windows, doors, steps and curtains) and the theatre (curtains, stage, perspective), a world is evoked in which nothing can serve as a point of reference. The experience is similar to surfing on the internet, scrolling through instagram, unfolding the gallery map of Art Brussels or shopping in a French supermarket. All images in the book are woodcuts. Christophe Van Gerrewey has written a text that actually creates an imbroglio. The entire book is printed in letterpress.
