‎Willem Van den Blocke was one of the most accomplished sculptors of the late sixteenth century in the Baltic Region and in Central Europe. His career perfectly exemplifies the challenges encountered by Netherlandish sculptors abroad in the sixteenth century. Although entirely forgotten until the beginning of the nineteenth century, Van den Blocke was one of the most accomplished sculptors of the late sixteenth century in the Baltic Region and in Central Europe. Willem van den Blocke?s activities in the Baltic region provide an excellent basis for a case study, since his career perfectly exemplifies challenges encountered by Netherlandish sculptors abroad in the sixteenth century. Born in Mechelen around 1550 and most probably apprenticed to the studio of Cornelis Floris, he was dispatched to K nigsberg (Kaliningrad) in Prussia to erect the grand tomb of Duke Albrecht Hohenzollern in 1569. After completing this task, he settled in K nigsberg. In 1582, Van den Blocke moved to Danzig (Gda?sk) and remained there until around 1620. In the Baltic region, he created sumptuous tombs and epitaphs, commemorating e.g. the Swedish King Johan III Vasa. He worked for members of the B thory family and the Polish, Swedish, and Prussian nobility, as well as for the urban elites of Danzig, Elbl?g (Elbing), and Toru? (Thorn). Despite his importance for the artistic development in the Baltic region, knowledge about Van den Blocke?s life and activities has nonetheless remained limited. Only in recent years the artist began to feature in discussions about the impact made by Netherlandish sculptors in sixteenth-century Northern Europe. This book offers a detailed investigation of the origins of his art and design strategies, of his workshop practice, his relationship to other artists, his adaptation to the requirements encountered abroad and his patronage. In addition, a thorough analysis of Van den Blocke?s work, following these new avenues of research, allows for a better understanding of the dynamic processes shaping art and architecture during a period of profound transformation of the European artistic landscape. A study of Netherlandish sculptors working abroad is important precisely because it may extend our understanding of the process of dissemination and redefinition of new artistic languages as a dynamic and multilayered phenomenon that involved interaction and exchange among artists of diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, the transfer of artistic models and ideas into a new cultural situation required their adaptation to the requirements of another culture and in turn influenced that culture as well. Only an extended study of the cultural, social, and political context of their activities, combined with a traditional analysis of artistic forms, can reveal the significance of Netherlandish artists and their work.‎

On Holy Ground: Liturgy, Architecture, and Urbanism in the Cathedral and in the Streets of Medieval Florence asks just one question: had the Florence Duomo never been excavated, what could we have known of the legendary cathedral of S. Reparata below it? The answer comes through the transcription of two key texts: one, never published until now, was written for the cathedral clergy around 1190; the other was composed around 1230, and printed just once, in the eighteenth century. English translations bring to life the liturgical year in medieval Florence, from the gorgeous pageantry of Christmas to the plaintive rites of Easter. The archaeological finds now make sense of the chapels, altars, and hallowed tombs that are cited in the texts. The volume then reconstructs the canonry (torn down around 1840), where the officiating priests lived, and the neighboring buildings on the cathedral square: a hospital, a school, and a prominent city gate that long ago disappeared, and a Baptistery, bishop's palace, and confraternity headquarters that are still standing. One chapter is devoted to the religious processions that ventured forth from S. Reparata to wind through the streets of Florence. Here the old texts are brought to life by the towers, bridges, churches, and monuments that survive from medieval Florence. The processional routes are examined for their social, political, and economic importance to the cathedral clergy, and the way the routes delineated the main lines of Roman Florence. The final chapter explores the food that poured onto the tables of the cathedral clergy from the farms and villages of the Florentine countryside. ‎By the time of its completion in 1621, the former Jesuit church in Antwerp was one of the most brilliant achievements in the Southern Netherlands, particularly due to the ceiling paintings after Rubens? designs and his two altarpieces. Nevertheless, from the seventeenth century to the present day, the precise extent of Rubens? involvement in the architecture and the architectural sculpture of the church has been a point of discussion. Rubens was in close contact with the Jesuit Francois de Aguilon, designer of the ground plan of the Antwerp Jesuit church, and with lay brother Pieter Huyssens who made most of the drawings for the church. Known to be by Rubens? hand are a limited number of drawings and a sketch in oil for architectural ornaments and sculptures that relate both to the exterior and to the interior of the structure. Despite its numerous restorations, the iconographic scheme of the church is even today visibly influenced by Rubens? jaunty visual language which goes back to examples of ancient antiquity and its Christian interpretations in early Baroque churches in Rome. Some of the church?s decorative designs were also modelled after works by contemporary Italian artists such as Cherubino Alberti. In this critical catalogue, the design drawings and oil sketches attributed to Rubens, a number of which later served as models for religious as well as profane architectural decoration, including that of Cardinal-Infant Ferdinand's Pompa Introitus in 1635, are extensively discussed.‎

‎Summary This study looks at the ways in which physicians and philosophers developed Galen's philosophical legacy at the end of the Renaissance, and shows how their reading of classical medical texts moved beyond accepted patterns and conventions. By challenging a traditional historiographical account that described Renaissance Galenism in terms of decline and fall, this study argues for a new assessment of Galen's legacy, also read through the lens of those who opposed or reacted critically to it and thus contributed to the shaping of important aspects of the early modern debate on anthropology, ethics, psychology and even quantified experimentation. Among these many innovations and transformations, the notion of 'ingenuity' (ingenium) deserves particular attention. Hidden within this corporeal, inherent and heritable inclination, two major themes that side disquietingly with the development of modern subjectivity can be identified: the 'corporeality of the body', and the common destiny of humans and animals. More generally, this study offers a contribution to the ongoing debate on the role and value of medical history, arguing in favour of the concept of 'historical translatability' in balancing the longue dur e of traditions with the chaotic interactions of individual thinkers.
