‎Summary This study looks at the ways in which physicians and philosophers developed Galen's philosophical legacy at the end of the Renaissance, and shows how their reading of classical medical texts moved beyond accepted patterns and conventions. By challenging a traditional historiographical account that described Renaissance Galenism in terms of decline and fall, this study argues for a new assessment of Galen's legacy, also read through the lens of those who opposed or reacted critically to it and thus contributed to the shaping of important aspects of the early modern debate on anthropology, ethics, psychology and even quantified experimentation. Among these many innovations and transformations, the notion of 'ingenuity' (ingenium) deserves particular attention. Hidden within this corporeal, inherent and heritable inclination, two major themes that side disquietingly with the development of modern subjectivity can be identified: the 'corporeality of the body', and the common destiny of humans and animals. More generally, this study offers a contribution to the ongoing debate on the role and value of medical history, arguing in favour of the concept of 'historical translatability' in balancing the longue dur e of traditions with the chaotic interactions of individual thinkers. ‎Summary This innovative collection explores the causes and effects of 'disciplined dissent' - forms of protest or political action positioned between the poles of submission and defiance. To identify the political influence of commoners, the emphasis is neither 'top down' nor 'bottom up' but on mutual influence and the interplay between rulers and ruled. Contributions concerning quite diverse polities show a careful opposition of non-elite people through an effort to respect the legislative system and to find common ground with the authorities. The aim was to emphasize aspects of the norms and institutions in favour of the benefit of the community, or to ensure adjustments of some aspects if found to be beneficial for the few and detrimental for many. The examination of non-violent pressure can help us to have a more exhaustive understanding of the protagonists, causes, and effects of socio-political changes in contexts of governmental development. The analysis includes cases of violent action that managed to secure royal approval. The premise of the book is that inequality, far from being accepted as normal and inevitable, was frequently questioned by less powerful people. When targeted by more or less evident forms of political marginalization, they laid claim to principles of justice and on this basis developed a critical comprehension of government, pursued a selective rejection of injustice, and gained recognition through negotiation. ‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original pictorial wrappers. Chromo-lithographed photo-montage collage cover with seven b/w photos of African buildings and natives, and a red map of Africa. Complete in wrappers and folded huge Africa map (size: 57 x 82 cm). Cover size: 28.5 x 20.5 cm. In Turkish. Scale: 1/20,000,000. A very rare chromo-lithographed Africa map, prepared for the geography lessons about foreign countries in Turkey in 1930. The map shows the territories of the African continent, which was still politically under European colonialism as of the 1930s. It includes Rio de Oro (Spanish territory), Fas [i.e. Morocco], Algeria, Sahara, Cameroon (French territories), Trabulus [i.e. Libya] as Italian territory; and Liberia, Egypt, East Sudan, Eritre [i.e. Eritrea], Habesistan [i.e. Ethiopia], Somali, Kenya, Belgian Kongo, Angola, Mozambique and South African land including Rhodesia (equivalent in the territory to modern Zimbabwe), Transvaal, The Orange Free State [Oranje-Vrystaat], Natal and Kap [Cape] with Madagascar. An extra panel for the same scale map showing the Suez Canal, Nile Delta, and North Egypt in the lower-left corner. Duran studied in Istanbul and Paris. He worked as a geography teacher in various high schools and afterward he undertook the positions of lecturer and administrator in Ankara Gazi Education Institute for a time. He was known for his writings on various topics and particularly for his works on geography. Born in the imperial period, Duran conducted the first cartographic studies of the Republic of Turkey after the transition to the Republican administration. Sealed. Slight foxing.
