L?origine de cet aspect de l?oeuvre de Dubuffet, ou le passage de la peinture a l?architecture dans son oeuvre, provient de la commande de deux peintures monumentales pour la Nouvelle Faculte des Lettres de Nanterre, alors en construction, qui amene Dubuffet a s?interesser a de nouveaux materiaux pour transcrire les figures du cycle de L?Hourloupe dans un support plus resistant que la peinture vinylique qu'il emploie alors. Tres vite, des essais en ceramique sont realises, transformant la surface plane en bas-reliefs, offrant a L'Hourloupe sa premiere tentative d'investir la troisieme dimension.
