De stadsbesturen van Haarlem, Leiden, Delft, Amsterdam, Gouda, Rotterdam en Schiedam was er in de achttiende eeuw veel aan gelegen hun publieke bouwwerken optimaal te beheren. De stevige concurrentie tussen de verschillende steden vroeg om voortdurende investeringen. Hoewel dit niet voor elke stad eenvoudig was, moest de facade van macht en welvaart altijd overeind blijven. Liet de groeiende economie van Rotterdam en Schiedam belangrijke verbeteringen van het stadsbeeld toe, steden als Leiden, Haarlem en Delft zagen zich juist geconfronteerd met diepgaande economische problemen en alle (ruimtelijke) gevolgen van dien. Publieke bouwwerkzaamheden bleken zeer fraudegevoelig. Stadsbesturen zochten de oplossing onder andere in verbeterde aanbesteding en het benoemen van hoogopgeleide bouwkundig functionarissen. De publieke architectuurontwikkeling in de achttiende eeuw is tot op heden weinig belicht. Ten onrechte, want binnen de stadsbesturen en stedelijk bouwbedrijven bestond voortdurend aandacht voor verbetering van de publieke ruimte en voorzieningen. Achter de facade van de Hollandse stad brengt de organisatie van de stedelijk bouwbedrijven en de verantwoordelijke bouwkundigen in beeld en beschrijft, geillustreerd met talrijke oorspronkelijke bouwtekeningen, belangrijke architecturale, stedenbouwkundige en waterstaatkundige projecten uit de achttiende eeuw.

Besides creating many fine works of art Ernst Geissendorfer served as Town Councillor of Rothenburg during the 1960's. Before World War Two Ernst Geissendorfer usually produced small uncoloured etchings. After 1950 however he created much larger etchings to which he applied hand-colouring. "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" Rothenburg over the Tauber dates from this latter period. This original hand-colored etching depicts one of Germany's most picturesque places. Situated in Bavaria on the Tauber River Rothenburg is virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages. Medieval towers and walls of defence still stand within the city. Etching. Approx. 9" x 12" .
