‎Summary The rich literary production of Gaza in the fifth and sixth centuries AD has received quite some attention in recent scholarship. Yet, the figure and work of Procopius the Sophist, as author of catenae, compiler, and epitomist of patristic exegesis, have remained relatively unknown and under-explored. This collection of essays delves deeply into Procopius' exegetical work. At the outset, a strong case is made that one should distinguish between the famous orator of Gaza and "the Christian sophist" Procopius. A first large section of the book deals with the Genesis Epitome that is studied from three different angles: the limited and as a rule critical use of Origen and his tradition; the importance given to Theodore of Mopsuestia's exegesis of Gen 1-3; and the relations between Procopius' Epitome and John Philoponus' De opificio mundi. The section on the Exodus Epitome studies the specificity of Procopius' work in comparison to the Catena on Exodus, the way the material is organised, and the literary genre of the work. The volume further contains contributions on the connections between the Scholia on Kings attributed to Procopius, the type B catena, and the so-called "Catena Lipsiensis"; the relations between Procopius' Catena on Proverbs and other catenae on this book; the sources of the Isaiah Epitome that show a diligent and able compiler at work; and the comparison between the characteristic features of Procopius' Epitomes and those of the Catena III on Obadiah. As a whole, it offers a wide perspective and significantly advances research on, and our knowledge of, Procopius the Christian sophist, a still somewhat mysterious early Byzantine author and scholar. "The 28-metre-long depiction of Marmara Sea Walls, rendered in watercolour by the Istanbulite Chief Engineer Dimtriadis Effendy in 1875, has been preserved at he Istanbul Archaeological Museums since it was donated to Müze-i Hümâyûn (The Imperial Museum) in 1917. This publication was prepared in order to introduce this important document, which has been available to be studied by scholars, to a wider audience. Also within the scope of the project, to be able to allow the preservation of the original document, a one to one scale copy of the scroll was produced and presented to the Museum.". Dimitriadis Efendi is the son of Dimitri Efendi ofthe Ottoman Greeks. He studied at the Greek school in Beyoglu and later at the French Missionary Schools and received lessonsin mathematics from a private teacher. He was speaking Turkish, and able to read and write in French and Greek. In 1871, he joined the Greek Philosophical Syllogos of Constantinople. He acted as a permanent member of the Archaeological Committee of the Society between 1871 and 1876, and as a member of the Science Committee of the Society from 1876 to 1882. He gave lectures on Practical Geometry, Applied Geometry, and Applied Engineering. On 31 May, 1882, he was appointed as the Umûr-u Nâfia Mühendisi of the Province of Thessaloniki. In consideration of his services, he was later decorated with the Fourth class of the Order of Medjidie on 22 September 1890 and to being promoted to the rank of assistant chief engineer, he was also appointed as the structural ccommissioner of waterworks. His Marmara Sea Walls is a drawing and watercolour on paper, with a size of 47,7x2800 cm. The lower, righthand corner bears the signature of G. A. Demetriades, dated 1875. The scroll contains the Marmara Sea façade of the Istanbul Walls, starting from the Seraglio Point and reaching all the way to the section located just before Yedikule. It could be observed that the names of some doors, mosques, pavilions, and piers were marked on the scroll with a pencil, sometimes in Arabic and at other times in Latin letters. The expressions written in pencil on certain parts of the walls and bastions...". ‎Andre Bauchant (1873-1958) is one of those French artists long known as 'naive painters' for whom the term 'modern primitives' would be more appropriate. Besides landscapes of the Touraine countryside and pictures of flowers and birds, he painted poetic and mythical visions. A horticulturalist by profession, he did not embark on his career as a painter until he was 46. His work is marked by his close affinity with nature and his passion for ancient mythologies. In 1921, Bauchant exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, where he came to the attention of Amedee Ozenfant and Le Corbusier, who became Bauchant's mentor and a passionate collector of his work. Andre Bauchant's position in the shadow of his far more famous fellow-painter Henri Rousseau is unjustified. ‎Door zijn tijdgenoot Philippe Baert, secretaris van de Brusselse kunstacademie, werd Jan Baptist Simoens (1715-1779) als de belangrijkste Gentse architect uit de tweede helft van de 18de eeuw beschouwd. Het is de enige die is opgenomen in zijn Memoires sur les sculpteurs et architectes des Pays-Bas. In de 19de en 20ste eeuw is dat beeld geleidelijk aan afgebrokkeld. Recent onderzoek heeft echter aangewezen dat dit negatieve artistieke beeld van Simoens dient bijgesteld. Die ommekeer is vooral bewerkstelligd door de vondst van de korte biografische nota, die de neef van Simoens, August Bernaert, rond 1780 naar Baert opstuurde, vergezeld van een tekst getiteld Memorie nopende de wercken, een memorie die door Simoens zelf kort voor zijn dood is opgesteld. Omdat uit de nieuwe archiefgegevens over Simoens bleek dat een aantal van zijn belangrijkste werken in het Land van Aalst gerealiseerd werden (abdijen van Geraardsbergen, Grimminge, Ninove en Sint-Martens-Lierde; kasteel van Leeuwergem) besloot het bestuur van de geschiedkundige vereniging Het Land van Aalst om een tentoonstelling aan zijn oeuvre in het Land van Aalst te wijden en daartoe verder opzoekingswerk te verrichten. Dit onderzoek brengt een schat van nieuwe gegevens aan het licht en voert ons terug naar Gent, naar het milieu van de Gentse Tekenacademie en naar de rol die Simoens daar gespeeld heeft. Simoens introduceerde er het classicisme. Het classicisme was bij uitstek de stijl die uitdrukking gaf aan de ideeen van de Verlichting. Het was de stijl die door het Oostenrijkse gouvernement in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden gepropageerd werd. Een samenvattende bewerking van dit onderzoek, met het accent op de illustraties, vormt het onderwerp van een nieuwe publicatie in de reekst Kleine Cultuurdgidsen, uitgegeven door het Provinciebestuur van Oost-Vlaanderen.‎
