Madame la Princesse de Conty, Doüairière par sa très humble, très soumise et très obligée Servante M. C. Gravet Jourdain". On connaît au moins quatre autres manuscrits comparables, l'un conservé à la Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal (ms 2546), le second conservé à la Mazarine (ms. 3363), le troisième passé en vente chez Sotheby's en décembre 2003, le dernier de format in-4, daté de 1695 et passé en vente en avril 2005. Notre exemplaire et l'exemplaire de la vente Sotheby's sont indiscutablement rédigés de la même main (leurs dimensions sont d'ailleurs quasiment identiques). Un espace blanc a été réservé dans le texte au verso du feuillet 21 : à la fin de la description de l'Allée Royale est réservée une "Place d'attente pour le deuxième Terme", entre le Dieu Pan orné d'une dépouille de Panthère, et le troisième terme ("Bacchus fait par Raon"), celui-ci proche du dernier, une statue de Pomone attribuée à Le Hongre (en sculpture, un "terme" désigne une statue n'ayant que la tête de figure humaine, et terminée en gaine par le bas). La dédicataire du manuscrit est la fille légitimée de Louis XIV et de la duchesse de La Vallière ; Marie-Anne de Bourbon porta le titre de "Princesse de Conty, Doüairière" à partir de 1685, au décès de son époux le prince de Conti. pEn état d'usage (couv. frottée avec qq. ratures et calculs, exemplaire manipulé avec qq. frott. en marges et qq. petites mouill., ex-libris ms. ‎Rubens's nine paintings in the ceiling of the Banqueting Hall, in Whitehall, London, provided the main decoration of this magnificent room, which was the focal point of Stuart Court ceremonial. Commissioned by King James I and his son, the future Charles I, following the destruction of the early Jacobean Banqueting Hall, their role in enhancing court spectacle came to an end with the fire that destroyed the rest of Whitehall Palace in 1598. The delay in executing the commission was due to matters of state, in which Rubens was involved as a diplomat. His stay in London in this capacity in 1629/30 made possible the realization of this commission. Rubens would have been aware that the Stuarts owed their position to the regal union of the crowns of England and Scotland, that his royal patron had now embraced his father?s pacific policy and that he was the more determined to impose an absolute rule, which his father had eloquently expounded in speeches ad treatises. These three themes form the central core of the cycle which glorified the reign of the late king, James I. The cycle presented Rubens with a great challenge, not only because of the novelty of the subject matter, but also because of the formal problems presented by the huge scale of the work. This volume of the Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard provides the fullest review to date of the history of the commission, it also unravels the complex preparatory work and places the subject matter in the context of early Stuart political and ethical aspirations.‎

‎Gericault fragmenten van mededogen In 1908 verwierven De Vrienden van het Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent op een Parijse veiling voor een mooie prijs een schilderij van Theodore Gericault (1791 - 1824) met als titel De waanzinnige moordenaar. Bij deze gelegenheid vroeg de lokale pers zich af wie er zo gek zou zijn om in zijn woonkamer het portret van een moordenaar op te hangen! Het portret ? dat eigenlijk dat van een kleptomaan was ? maakte samen met onder andere ?de ijverzuchtige? uit het Musee des Beaux-Arts de Lyon en de ?kinderdief? uit het Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield Massachusetts, deel uit van een reeks portretten van geestesgestoorden die door Gericault in het hospitaal la Salpetriere in Parijs geschilderd waren. Door deze reeks portretten, evenals door zijn meesterwerk Het vlot van de Medusa, kreeg Gericault snel naam als de schilder van de gruwel, van de pijn, van de waanzin en van de dood. De tentoonstelling in het Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent toont door middel van schilderijen, tekeningen, prenten en documenten een andere benadering van deze door de realiteit en alle aspecten van de menselijke natuur begeesterde kunstenaar. Door een vrijwillig streven naar een dagelijks bestaan, soms gelukkig, maar in een tijdsgewricht dat ten prooi was aan de stuiptrekkingen van de geschiedenis dikwijls ook gewelddadig of dodelijk, tracht Gericault de mens in al zijn facetten te ontraadselen. Hierbij legt hij getuigenis af van een diepe empathie voor zijn modellen, van wie het gelaat de littekens van het leven draagt. Door het verdriet maar ook de hartstochten van zijn tijdgenoten vol mededogen te willen delen, raakt hij uitgeput en vernietigt hij zichzelf. Werken van andere kunstenaars zoals Fussli, Goya, Delacroix en Menzel laten ons toe om de context waarin Gericault werkte beter te begrijpen. Deze tentoonstelling werd gerealiseerd in samenwerking met de Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt.‎
