‎Grützner, Eduard - 1846 Großkarlowitz bei Neiße - München 1925‎ ‎Ein Mönch mit Schriftstück und Stift in den Händen im Klostergarten.‎ ‎o.J. Feder in Schwarz, über Bleistift, auf Velin; verso Figurenstudie, gerötelt. 15,6:13,2 cm. Verso mit Resten alter Verklebung. Sicher Vorzeichnung zu einer Radierung, möglicherweise aus dem Leben Franz von Assisis.‎ ‎Mit Unterstützung des Pfarrers seines Geburtsortes und des Architekten Hirschberg ging der Genremaler Eduard Grützner, dessen Talent schon früh entdeckt wurde, 1854 nach München, um ein Kunststudium zu absolvieren. Zunächst besuchte er die Vorschule der Kunstgewerbeschule von H. Dyck (1812-1874), wechselte jedoch bereits nach kurzer Zeit in die Antikenklasse der Akademie zu J.G. Hiltensperger (1806-1890) und A. Strähuber (1814-1882). 1865 ging er in die Malklasse von H. Anschütz (1802-1880), arbeitete aber zugleich unter Anleitung C.T. von Pilotys (1826-1886), in dessen Atelier er 1867 aufgenommen wurde. Etwa zu dieser Zeit wechselte er vom Historien- zum Genrefach. 1869/70 beendete Grützner die akademische Ausbildung und arbeitete in München in einem eigenen Atelier bis zu seinem Tode. Grützner, der neben C. Spitzweg (1808-1885) und F. von Defregger (1835-1921) als bedeutendster Münchner Genremaler der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet werden kann, ist in fast allen deutschen Museen vertreten.
