About the Book:- The Present volume is supplementary to my “ Indian Architecture: its Psychology, Structure and History, “which the Muhammadan and British periods, but it has a wider scope as a study of the political, social, religious and artistic aspects of Indo-Aryan civilisation, as revealed in the ancient and medieval monuments of India. For the chronological and statistical framework of it. I have mostly used the data furnished by such well-known authorities as professor T. W. Thys Davids “Buddhist India,” Mr. Vincent Smth’s “ Early History of India,: and Dr. Barnett’s “Antiquities the architecture sculpture and painting here illustrated. If my reading is wrong my critics will convict me of error from the same sources. About the Author:-Ernest Binfield Havell (1861 –1934), who published under the name E.B. Havell, was an influential English arts administrator, art historian and author of numerous books about Indian art and architecture. He was a member of the Havell family of artists and art educators. He was the principal of the Government School of Art, Calcutta from 1896 to 1905, where, along with Abanindranath Tagore, he developed a style of art and art education based on Indian rather than Western models, which led to the foundation of the Bengal school of art. He published two valuable articles on Indian art in the October 1902 and January 1903 issues of a well known art journal of London, The Studio. In January 1906 he left for England on long leave and finally in 1908, he was removed from the post. He married Angelique Wilhelmina Jacobsen, daughter of a Danish navy officer in 1895 at St Giles, London, Middlesex, England. The couple had a daughter, Sonia Joyce Havell in 1902. Very Good French This attractive color lithographed map shows the Imperial Ottoman territories in the Balkan Peninsula, Anatolia, also North African shores and Maghreb countries, Egypt and Vilayet de Tripoli (Libya) and Liva de Benghasi. It has small views with a small scale of Tripoli, Europe, Egypt, and Nubia with the Arabian Peninsula. This map reflects the territories and situation of the last period of the Ottoman Empire soon after the Second Constitutional Era in 1908. Inside the red lines in this map shows the Ottoman territories in 1909 with its maximum extent, just before the Balkan Wars, (1912-1913). In Europe, Western Thrace territories up to Montenegro including Adrianople are within the borders of the Empire. E. Nardin was a French cartographer who prepared more than sixty maps in the early 19th century, especially mapping Middle Eastern, North African, Sub-Saharan African areas. In the Christian art of western Europe images survive from as early as the sixth century that show figures of founders or donors bearing a model of the building they caused to be constructed, renovated or embellished. Previous studies have tended to turn on the question of how accurately these models represent the buildings they were intended to portray. But the donors' model cannot be explained exclusively by comparison with its built equivalent. The sculptors, goldsmiths, minters, mosaicists, painters, weavers and sealmakers who created these little buildings were not always aiming to produce a straightforward likeness of the edifice in question but rather to represent its significance. The donor's model could underline the function or symbolic importance of a building or be an expression of support for a particular ruler. It could document real or fictive family ties, validate a patron's position or enhance his prestige. It could operate as a policy statement by lords temporal and spiritual, be deployed as a weapon in ecclesiastical rivalries, or serve as a visual charter to underpin the lawfulness and legality of gifted privileges, properties and possessions. About The Author : Ernest Binfield Havell (1861-1934), who published under the name E.B. Havell, was an influential English arts administrator, art historian and author of numerous books about Indian art and architecture. He was a member of the Havell family of artists and art educators. He was the principal of the Government School of Art, Calcutta from 1896 to 1905, where, along with Abanindranath Tagore. In India, Havell initially served the Madras School of Art as Superintendent for a decade from 1884.
