‎De in Mechelen geboren kunstenaar Narcisse Tordoir ( 1954) herdenkt permanent de betekenis van schilderkunst. Al van de start van zijn artistieke carri re in 1976 kiest Tordoir voor een scherpe bevraging en een doorgedreven onderzoek van de schilderkunst. Deze zoektocht resulteert in een complex maar consequent oeuvre. Zijn recent werk bestaat uit composities, vaak op zeer groot formaat, waarin allerlei elementen en figuren samenkomen. Meestal ontstaan ze uit foto?s, tekeningen en zelfgemaakte ensceneringen in het atelier. In zijn schilderijen maakt hij ook onder meer gebruik van zeefdruktechnieken, airbrush en drippings, die samen een complex visueel spel cre ren.‎

‎Leo Gestel en Gustave De Smet, vluchtelingen ? zielsverwanten Gestel (1881-1941) en De Smet (1877-1943) kregen beiden de eerste schilderlessen van hun vader en kozen op jonge leeftijd voor een leven als vrij kunstenaar. Ze behoorden elk in eigen land al gauw tot de voorhoede, die het klassieke academische wilde afschudden en op zoek gingen naar stijlvernieuwingen. In Nederland waren dat Gestel, Sluijters en Mondriaan; in Vlaanderen De Smet met onder meer van den Berghe en Permeke. De Duitse inval in Belgi deed De Smet in 1914 naar Nederland vluchten waar hij Gestel ontmoette, die hem introduceerde in de Amsterdamse kunstwereld. De vernieuwingsdrift bracht beiden uiteindelijk tot het expressionisme, waarbij De Smet sterk be nvloed werd door de Nederlandse modernen. Begin jaren twintig keerde hij terug naar Belgi , waar hij met enkele medestanders de in Nederland opgedane ervaringen uitdroeg. Kort daarna zocht Gestel na een buitenechtelijk avontuur zijn toevlucht tot de Leiestreek en woonde hij in het Heilig Huizeken te Drongen. In die periode 1925-1927 kwam hij tot rust te midden van zijn Belgische vrienden en onderging hij op zijn beurt de invloed van het Vlaams expressionisme. Dit boek vertelt hoe beide kunstvrienden actief betrokken waren in de stormachtige vernieuwingen in de kunstwereld van begin twintigste eeuw, over het komen en gaan van kunstenaarsverenigingen in Vlaanderen en Nederland, en hoe hun werk evolueerde van het academische naar het expressionisme en zij daarbij ?onderweg? de invloed ondergingen van impressionisme, luminisme, pointillisme, kubisme en fauvisme. We zien hoe zij zich gesteund voelden in het land van de ander, we lezen in hun brieven over hun ups en downs, en we komen iets meer te weten over hun vriendschap en hun persoonlijkheid. Nederlanders en Vlamingen maken aan de hand van De Smet en Gestel kennis met de hevig in beroering zijnde kunstenaarswereld van begin twintigste eeuw en zullen meer zicht krijgen op wat zich aan de andere kant van de grens afspeelde. Dit boek is het sluitstuk van een drieluik, dat Hans Hagen over Leo Gestel heeft gemaakt. ‎Summary In 1997 the canonesses regular of Soeterbeeck moved from their convent in Deursen (the Netherlands) to a nursing home in Nuland. They left behind an old library of considerable size and historical significance that is now the core of the Soeterbeeck Collection at Nijmegen University Library. It is a suitable starting point for telling the story of the historical library of a women's convent with roots in the Modern Devotion, from the community's humble beginnings in 1448 to the present day. This study describes the collective history of all manuscripts and early printed books that are known to have been in communal or personal ownership at Soeterbeeck. It investigates the books' production and delves into their traces of use. Many of these are connected to each other, usually because they were left by the same person or had the same purpose. Such units transcend the level of individual volumes and reveal what might be called the stratification of the historical library as a whole. They can be interpreted in the context of the sisters' personal lives and the convent's communal history. This approach provides insight in the multiplicity of meanings that the books had for their users. For the first time, theoretical principles of modern archaeology are used to map a historical library as an archaeological site. It might contain an intriguing combination of words or an isolated letter of the alphabet, a fractured message or a semi-recognisable phrase.
