‎Zwans wordt vaak aanzien als platte, volkse humor. Zwans is echter geen plompe billenkletserij, eerder een absurde, ironische, tweedegraads humor. Zwanzers verschalken hun medemensen graag maar eerder met een subtiele kwinkslag. Grappen, zotternijen en rabelaisiaanse fopperijen vonden in het 19de-eeuwse Belgi een vruchtbare voedingsbodem. Clubjes van heren van stand als Les Agathop des, La Soci t des Joyeux, Les Crocodiles, Le Diable au Corps. haalden met regel-maat snakerijen uit: feesten, eetfestijnen, gezang, sollen met de gevestigde orde, ondermijnen van voorgekauwde en vastgeroeste gedachten. Louis Gh mar, de beroemde Brusselse fotograaf, schilderde en bouwde in 1870 een eigen Mus e Fantaisiste met pastiches van bekende eigentijdse schilderijen. En het allereerste witte, monochrome schilderij van de kunstgeschiedenis: Toile Blanche/ Peinture de l'Avenir. Met zijn persiflages werd hij de olijke gangmaker van 20ste-eeuwse kunst-tendensen. Daarmee zette Gh mar de traditie van de pre-dada stische tentoonstellingen en evene-menten van La Soci t des Joyeux van de jaren 1850-1860 voort. Brussel was daarin Parijs voor. Maffe kunst'performances' die navolging kenden in de Great Zwans Exhibitions (1885, 1887, 1914). Een pop-up museum. Tableaux, al dan niet vivants. Een poesjenellenmars. Kierewiete wetenschap-pelijke bedenksels. Schimpscheuten. Pamfletten. Verzonnen nieuws. Karikaturen. Zo borduurde dat eigengereid duimelotlandje aan die surrealistische mentaliteit en humor. Toch zijn die kwajongensstreken niet vrijblijvend. In die esbattementen en farcen van de 19de eeuw uitten artiesten n bourgeois hun kritische, vrijdenkende commentaar op de maatschappij, op het politieke en culturele beleid, op de oorlogen en de gang van zaken. Vaak met een zweem van melancholie. Zwans, een tedere guerrilla. Dit monkelende boek duikt voor het eerst - met beeld en woord - in de ongekende geschiedenis van die typisch Belgische humor, gedrenkt in zelfspot. Zwans, verdoken erfgoed.‎

‎De Tsjech Borek Sipek (Praag, 1949) is een wereldberoemde architect die vooral naam heeft gemaakt als ontwerper van glasobjecten en meubels. Na een aantal jaren in Amsterdam werkzaam te zijn geweest, woont en werkt Sipek tegenwoordig weer in Praag. Het hoogtepunt van zijn carriere vormen ongetwijfeld zijn werkzaamheden aan het Kasteel in Praag. Deze pretentieuze opdracht die hem tot 'hofarchitect' maakte, kreeg hij van Vaclav Havel, president van Tsjechie tussen 1993 en 2003. Op het gebied van de vormgeving vallen vooral zijn kleurige, barokke glasobjecten in het oog die de functie van het drinkglas een andere inhoud hebben weten te geven. ‎Summary This is the first book length examining closely Themistius' philosophical thought and his understanding of Aristotelian philosophy. Themistius, well known as an eloquent orator and political personality of Constantinople during the fourth century ad, is an influential commentator on works of Aristotle. By assessing both of these aspects of Themistius' intellectual accomplishments, the present work explores and contextualizes his thought in both his paraphrases of the works of Aristotle and in his orations. Themistius' interpretation of Aristotelian thought, deeply influential in both the Arab and Latin worlds, and his strategy for teaching Aristotle, even outside the professional schools of philosophy, are major foci of this study. In particular, this work explicates Themistius' understanding of the nature and causality of the First Principle, of the cosmic order, and of the human soul and intellect. It argues that Themistius' approach reflects not only the systematization imparted by Alexander of Aphrodisias to the doctrines of Aristotle, but also the increasing, though oftentimes silent, influence of Plotinus. This is evident in the consideration of the three philosophical issues of God, cosmos, and soul analysed in Themistius, which reveal the preponderance of Plotinus' philosophy reflected in the Themistian orations. Concomitantly, it explores how Themistius' teachings proved decisive in the medieval understanding of Aristotle both among Arabic and Hebrew readers, as well as in the universities of Latin Europe. The authors go in search of that fascination for the heroes in armor. The rise of the printing press in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries changed a lot. ‎Radiography is a technique that has been employed in the study of paintings for more than a century. The history of this method of analysis indicates that its development has been modest since the 1960s, as its use has been limited to reductive approaches that take into account no more than the immediately intelligible signs. By systematically considering the physical mechanisms involved in the creation of an image, this volume seeks to demonstrate that we can access new fields of radiological analysis by identifying two categories of 'signs': those that may be obvious but whose meaning is misleading, and those which are not immediately comprehensible. This study has been primarily based on a thorough and essential reviewing of current literature concerning the materials and processes used for the making of paintings. The semiological analysis is based on the understanding of the physical phenomena occurring in the formation of the image, and on correlations between the radiographic images of a painting and the information stemming from its observation, other scientific results, and the restoration reports. Furthermore, a number of experiments were conducted to consolidate certain assumptions regarding image-formation mechanisms. Ultimately, this book hopes to show how data resulting from radiographic analysis can be seen and set in a broader context of information on a specific work or a group of works, in order to enrich our knowledge of art history, history of technology, and conservation as well as restoration. La radiographie est une technique appliqu e aux peintures depuis pr s d'un si cle. L'histoire de cette technique d'analyse montre que son d veloppement s'est trouv limit depuis les ann es 1960 en raison d'une approche uniquement bas e sur la prise en compte de signes imm diatement suggestifs. Or ce mode d'analyse ne permet pas d'expliquer l'ensemble des images observ es sur une radiographie de peinture. En consid rant de mani re syst matique le m canisme de formation de l'image, ce travail souhaite d montrer que l'on peut acc der de nouveaux champs de l'analyse radiologique en identifiant deux autres cat gories de signes: les signes suggestifs mais dont la signification est trompeuse et les signes non imm diatement intelligibles. Cette analyse a t possible gr ce une revue de la litt rature la plus compl te possible sur les mat riaux constitutifs et les proc d s employ s pour la r alisation des peintures. L'analyse s miologique est bas e sur la compr hension des ph nom nes physiques en jeu dans la formation de l'image et sur des corr lations entre les images observ es et les informations provenant de l'observation, d'autres examens r alis s sur l'oeuvre ou encore de rapports de restauration. De plus une exp rimentation a t conduite pour conforter certaines hypoth ses de m canisme de formation de l'image. Enfin, les donn es issues de la radiographie peuvent tre replac es dans un contexte plus large de donn es ou informations connues sur une ?uvre ou groupe d'oeuvres pour enrichir nos connaissances en histoire de l'art, histoire des techniques et conservation-restauration.
