Door haar openheid heeft Brussel een Europese rol gespeeld bij het ontstaan van het neo-impressionisme, het symbolisme en de art nouveau. In de 20e eeuw duiken interessante raakpunten op met het internationale modernisme. In de jaren 1920-1930 is Brussel één van de belangrijkste centra van het surrealisme. Toen de moderne kunst vanaf de jaren 1950 een mondiaal gebeuren werd, speelde Brussel met haar kunstgalerijen een vooraanstaande rol. Het belang van het hedendaagse Brussel als kruispunt wordt duidelijk door de inbreng van enkele actuele kunstenaars. Brussel, kruispunt van culturen heeft aandacht voor alle aspecten van de Brusselse cultuur, waarbij gepeild wordt naar een eigen Brusselse of Belgische artistieke visie of eigenaardigheid. Deze uitgave met een dertigtal bijdragen van nationale en internationale gerenommeerde historici en kunsthistorici o.l.v. Robert Hoozee, begeleidt de groots opgezette tentoonstelling Brussel, kruispunt van culturen, georganiseerd door Europalia in het kader van Brussel, Europese cultuurstad van het jaar 2000. Robert Hoozee is commissaris van de tentoonstelling Brussel, kruispunt van culturen, die plaats vindt in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten van 8 september 2000 tot 5 november 2000. Hij is directeur van het Museum voor Schone Kunsten te Gent. Bij het Mercatorfonds verschenen onder zijn leiding reeds de uitgave Moderne Kunst in België (1992) en de tentoonstellingscatalogus Parijs-Brusse/Paris-Bruxelles (1996).
