‎Summary The book analyzes the origin and development of the notion of the will in Saint Augustine's oeuvre. Organized chronologically, this study starts with an overview of the notion of the will in philosophical and Christian traditions anterior to Augustine as well as in Manichaeism (part 1). Part 2 shows that Augustine turns to the notion of the will in his early works in order to explain the origin of evil. At this stage, inspired by Stoicism and the works of Cicero, Augustine equates human will to power, potestas, and believes that good will is always capable to accomplish a good action on its own. Later, in the midst of anti-Manichaean polemics, Augustine recognizes the power that good and bad habits possess over the human soul, but continues to assert will's dominance over passions and habits (part 3). Subsequently, an extensive reading of the Scripture, especially of Paul's Epistles, leads Augustine to assert that will's capacity to act well or badly depends on the source where will takes its delight, rather than on its obedience to the mind (part 4). At the time when he writes his Confessions, Augustine is convinced that after original sin, human will lost its capacity to delight in the spiritual reality. By consequence, human will is unable to act well on its own. Only divine grace can restore will's capacity to delight in God freely and to act well. Entreprise selon un axe chronologique, cette tude fait appara tre les tapes d terminantes travers lesquelles la notion de volont a pris forme dans la pens e d'Augustin. Elle commence par une analyse br ve de la notion du vouloir dans les traditions philosophiques et chr tiennes ant rieures Augustin, ainsi que dans la pens e manich enne. La deuxi me partie met en lumi re qu'Augustin commence s'int resser la notion de la volont autour de 388 afin de r soudre le probl me de l'origine du mal. Au d but, inspir par le sto cisme et les travaux de Cic ron, Augustin per oit la volont comme pouvoir, potestas, et consid re que la volont bonne est toujours capable d'agir de sa propre force. Par la suite, au milieu de la controverse anti-manich enne, Augustin reconna t la puissance que les habitudes bonnes ou mauvaises ont sur l' me humaine, mais, il reste persuad que la volont domine toute habitude ou passion (partie 3). Plus tard, la lecture de l' criture, en particulier des p tres pauliniennes, am ne Augustin consid rer que c'est la source dans laquelle la volont trouve une d lectation, delectatio, plut t que sa soumission la raison, qui d termine la capacit d'agir bien ou mal (partie 4). Au moment de la r daction des Confessions il est persuad que, suite la chute d'Adam, la volont humaine a perdu sa capacit trouver la delectatio en Dieu. La volont est donc incapable d'agir bien par sa propre force, et seule la gr ce divine est capable de restaurer l'unit interne du vouloir et sa capacit aimer Dieu librement et agir selon le bien. ‎Summary Early medieval manuscripts were commonly annotated not only by glosses but also by annotation symbols. These graphic signs inserted in manuscript margins provided manuscript text with layers of additional meaning and functionality. From the most common signs marking biblical quotations and passages of interest to the sophisticated systems of signs used by some of the early medieval scholars, annotation symbols represent perhaps the most common form of marginalia encountered in early medieval books. Yet, their non-verbal character proved a serious obstacle to their understanding and appreciation. This book represents the first systematic study of annotation symbols used in the Latin West between c. 400 and c. 900. Combining paleographic evidence with the evidence of written sources such as late antique and early medieval lists of signs, this book identifies the most important communities of sign users and conventions in use in the early Middle Ages. It explores some of the notable differences between regions, periods, linguistic communities and classes of users and reconstructs a fascinating history of the practice of using signs, rather than words, to annotate text. Those who work with early medieval manuscripts will, furthermore, find this book to be a practical handbook of the most common annotation symbols attested in early medieval Western manuscripts or discussed in ancient and medieval sources. ‎<p>an 1865 Professionaly bound in Hubbed Quarter Leather Binding of "Transactions of the Exeter Diocesan Architectural Society" This came from an estate in Aiken South Carolina. This contains the Pedigree of the Gibbs family and the spine of the leather has this in gold gilt. The original wraps of the Transactions is intact internally. This contains lots of woodblock prints and black and white plates. Title page states that this is Volume 1 Part II Second Series. These were not intended for general publication but a copy was furnished to each member whose subscription was not in arrears. It contains The Parish of Clyt S. George Statue of S. Peter Annual Report June 12 1863 pedigree of the family Gibbs A paper on Powderham Castle mural decorations of the church of S. John Baptist quarterly report December 1863 Quarterly report October 6 1864 notes on the chuches of Jersey treasurers account. There is a bookplate on the inside of a Lewis Gibbs. There is no writing. There is some foxing to a few of the woodcuts. Some rub to the hubs on the spine. Points of the boards have rubs. A very nice collectors copy.</p> hardcover‎

‎De schilder Jo Delahaut is een van de spilfiguren van de geometrische abstractie in Belgi . Hij volgt zijn opleiding aan de Luikse academie waar hij ook een doctoraat in de kunstgeschiedenis behaalt (1939). Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog is zijn werk nog figuratief. Na een tentoonstelling in Charleroi (1942) maakt hij zijn eerste abstracte werken. Binnen de groep van La Jeune Peinture Belge is hij in 1947 de enige vertegenwoordiger van abstracte kunst. In 1946 wordt hij lid van R alit s Nouvelles in Parijs. Onder invloed van het werk van Auguste Herbin evolueert hij meer en meer naar de geometrische abstractie. In 1952 richt hij samen met o.a. Pol Bury, Jean Milo, Georges Collignon en Albert Saverys Art Abstrait op. Vervolgens richt Delahaut Art abstrait-Formes (1956) en Art Construit (1960) op. Met Bury schrijft hij in 1954 het manifest Le Spatialisme. Een van zijn laatste grote retrospectieve tentoonstellingen wordt in 1990 gehouden in het Mus e d?Art wallon. Bron: Letterenhuis Antwerpen‎
