Ainsi, les noms des villes de Canope, d'H racl ion, de Th nis, transmis par les auteurs anciens, v hiculaient des r ves de magnificence sans que les arch ologues ne parviennent les localiser. Ce myst re fut clairci lorsque l' quipe de Franck Goddio, avec l'apport des technologies les plus modernes, entreprit de dresser une carte g ophysique de la r gion ainsi que du grand port antique d'Alexandrie, constatant qu'une partie de la c te s' tait effondr e et gisait six m tres au-dessous du niveau de la mer. Ce fait est expliqu par la conjonction de plusieurs causes: mont e du niveau marin, lente subsidence de la c t du bassin oriental de la M diterran e, effondrements et glissements de terrains catastrophiques d clench s par des tremblements de terre et des ph nom nes de liqu faction des argiles. Une fois les sites compl tement submerg s vers le voie si cle, l' rosion naturelle et le recouvrement par d'importants d p ts d'alluvions apport es par les courants ont fini de d rober au regard des hommes seize si cles de civilisation parmi les plus riches du monde gyptien, de la Basse Epoque la conqu te arabe. Le delta du Nil, tant convoit pour ses richesses, avait vu sa civilisation influenc e par ses conqu rants: les Perses, les Grecs et la longue dynastie des Ptol m es, puis les Romains dont les amours de Jules C sar et de Cl op tre resteraient c l bres, l'apparition de la religion chr tienne qui s'exprima dans la destruction des figures pa ennes mais aussi dans leur assimilation souvent insoup onn e, et enfin la conqu te arabe. Le lent ph nom ne d'acculturation bouleversa le panth on des dieux, privil giant les cultes d'Isis et d'Osiris ainsi que de S rapis, et s'immis a dans la vie quotidienne, affectant le regard des Egyptiens sur un monde qui deviendrait le berceau de la civilisation occidentale. L'exposition rassemble 494 objets retrouv s lors des fouilles sous-marines de Canope, d'H racl ion et d'Alexandrie. Ils sont d ment inventori s et comment s dans le catalogue. Pour la premi re fois est pr sent en un m me lieu tout le mobilier d'un temple ptol ma que avec ses statues, parfois colossales, et ses objets de culte. A proximit foisonnaient toutes sortes d'artisanats et d'objets votifs, de c ramiques et de bijoux destin s aux p lerins. Cach s ou prot g s par l'eau, ces artefacts nous permettent d'approcher comme jamais auparavant l'extraordinaire brassage de cultures et de peuples qui animait le delta du Nil.‎

‎L'Antiquite est aujourd'hui a la mode, la Gaule aussi. Les reeditions de l'ouvrage stimulant de Pierre Pinon, La Gaule retrouvee, disent assez l'engouement du public pour le sujet. Dans son histoire de l'archeologie nationale, il accorde quelques pages a la Renaissance, evoquant brievement les grandes figures de Jean Poldo d'Albenas, d'Elie Vinet et de Jean Chaumeau. Les ? premieres observations archeologiques? remonteraient ainsi a la seconde moitie du XVIe siecle; quelque cinquante plus tard, Nicolas Bergier, inventeur de la premiere fouille, et Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc, ? le plus celebre des amateurs d'antiquites de son temps? , apparaissent comme les ancetres des archeologues modernes. Il faut remercier l'auteur de rehabiliter les antiquaires de la Renaissance; il est vrai que l'epoque, en depit de la fascination qu'aux temps modernes elle fut la premiere a nourrir pour l'Antiquite, n'a pas joui dans la tradition francaise d'une reputation de premier plan. C'est que les sources restent encore meconnues et peu utilisees malgre les travaux des erudits des XIXe et XXe siecles. ‎Willem Van den Blocke was one of the most accomplished sculptors of the late sixteenth century in the Baltic Region and in Central Europe. His career perfectly exemplifies the challenges encountered by Netherlandish sculptors abroad in the sixteenth century. Although entirely forgotten until the beginning of the nineteenth century, Van den Blocke was one of the most accomplished sculptors of the late sixteenth century in the Baltic Region and in Central Europe. Willem van den Blocke?s activities in the Baltic region provide an excellent basis for a case study, since his career perfectly exemplifies challenges encountered by Netherlandish sculptors abroad in the sixteenth century. Born in Mechelen around 1550 and most probably apprenticed to the studio of Cornelis Floris, he was dispatched to K nigsberg (Kaliningrad) in Prussia to erect the grand tomb of Duke Albrecht Hohenzollern in 1569. After completing this task, he settled in K nigsberg. In 1582, Van den Blocke moved to Danzig (Gda?sk) and remained there until around 1620. In the Baltic region, he created sumptuous tombs and epitaphs, commemorating e.g. the Swedish King Johan III Vasa. He worked for members of the B thory family and the Polish, Swedish, and Prussian nobility, as well as for the urban elites of Danzig, Elbl?g (Elbing), and Toru? (Thorn). Despite his importance for the artistic development in the Baltic region, knowledge about Van den Blocke?s life and activities has nonetheless remained limited. Only in recent years the artist began to feature in discussions about the impact made by Netherlandish sculptors in sixteenth-century Northern Europe. This book offers a detailed investigation of the origins of his art and design strategies, of his workshop practice, his relationship to other artists, his adaptation to the requirements encountered abroad and his patronage. In addition, a thorough analysis of Van den Blocke?s work, following these new avenues of research, allows for a better understanding of the dynamic processes shaping art and architecture during a period of profound transformation of the European artistic landscape. A study of Netherlandish sculptors working abroad is important precisely because it may extend our understanding of the process of dissemination and redefinition of new artistic languages as a dynamic and multilayered phenomenon that involved interaction and exchange among artists of diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, the transfer of artistic models and ideas into a new cultural situation required their adaptation to the requirements of another culture and in turn influenced that culture as well. Only an extended study of the cultural, social, and political context of their activities, combined with a traditional analysis of artistic forms, can reveal the significance of Netherlandish artists and their work.‎
