‎A leur epoque, Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck et Vermeer etaient percus comme des artistes modernes. Trop souvent, nous oublions qu'un jour, l'art ancien a ete revolutionnaire. Grace a lui et a leur talent, ils eurent tous l'honneur de frequenter David, Ingres et Girodet-Trioson. Certains eleves de Suvee travaillerent meme pour Napoleon et le roi de Hollande, Guillaume Ier. Avec leurs tableaux historiques surprenants, leurs splendides portraits et leurs carrieres impressionnantes, Suvee, Ducq, Odevaere et Kinsoen sont des representants majeurs de l'art des annees 1800. Bruges - Paris - Rome. Joseph Benoit Suvee et le neoclassicisme parait a l'occasion de l'exposition du meme nom qui se tient a Bruges et a Enschede. ‎Marten Melsen werd te Brussel geboren op 11 juli 1870. Hij was een echte Brusselaar met roots in de Antwerpse Polder en Ossendrecht (Nederland). Voor een uitgebreide biografie kunt u terecht op http://martenmelsen.free.fr/index_N.htm Na eerst in 1894 een lange zomerperiode met een vriend-kunstschilder rond Stabroek en Berendrecht te hebben geschilderd n gefotografeerd, beslist Melsen om rond 1896 permanent naar Stabroek te trekken. Hij huurt een stuk in de driewoonst van de enorme boerin Mie Pot, die hij daarna regelmatig op zeer sappige en originele wijze heeft vereeuwigd op doek. Melsen?s oeuvre wordt bekend, hij verkoopt vanaf 1907 aan musea en wordt bevriend met Stijn Streuvels en James Ensor. Na zijn huwelijk in 1909 met de nicht van zijn boezemvriend, de befaamde toondichter August De Boeck, koopt hij rond 1912 twee huisjes aan het Hoogeind te Stabroek, die hij liet ombouwen tot kunstatelier ?t Vossevelt genaamd. De daarop volgende prille gezinsjaren worden een mooie periode van regelmatige tentoonstellingen en persoonlijk succes, dat plots door elkaar geschud worden in het oorlogsjaar 1914 door het drama van het verschrikkelijk conflict, dat jaren gaat duren. Deze thematentoonstelling in het Poldermuseum toont hoe de kunstenaar tijdens die harde oorlogsjaren heeft kunnen overleven, waarin hij nieuwe inspiratie heeft gevonden, en welke kunstwerken hij maakte in een tijd dat schildersmateriaal moeilijk verkrijgbaar was en reizen praktisch onmogelijk werd. De tentoonstelling toont ook unieke documenten, brieven en foto?s uit het persoonlijk archief van de kunstenaar dat voor de eerste maal aan het publiek getoond.‎

‎The country house, chateau or rural palazzo set in extensive grounds may have been the ultimate badge of social pre-eminence but invariably their owners spent much of the year in the city. To this extent urban living was common to all elites worthy of the name, whatever their origin or source of wealth or power. Needless to say, though, how different elite groups experienced town life varied greatly. Focussing on the most basic aspect of urban living, this collection is concerned with the study of the places and types of residence of urban elites. Recently a number of historians have begun to explore the residential choices made by elites in the urban context, both as an important constituent of lifestyle and as a marker of elite identity and difference. However, whereas these studies have tended to focus on one particular elite group, a single place or one type of urban residence - such as aristocratic hotels - the current volume is original in exploring the patterns and logic of residential choices made by different elite groups in a variety of urban settings, in Britain, France and Italy, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Each of the book?s nine substantive chapters is written in either English or French (with an abstract in the other language) by a leading specialist either on elites or in the field of urban history. The volume arises out of two meetings of the specialists concerned, which gives it a degree of coherence rarely achieved in collections of this sort. A substantial essay by the editors points to similarities and contrasts between the specific cases and identifies key issues requiring further research.‎

En 1898 il entre à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Il visite l’Italie, l’Afrique et l’Amérique (où il fut appelé pour étudier un grand projet d’architecture à Chicago) et obtient le grand prix de Rome d’architecture en 1910. Il meurt à Marsillargue en 1912, âgé de 32 ans, des suites d’une malaria contractée à Paestum. Son éloge funèbre prononcée par V. Laloux est reproduit dans le livre, ainsi que le catalogue de ses principales œuvres.Exemplaire de Gaston CASTEL, ami de jeunesse de F. Janin. Il avait obtenu le 3e prix de Rome la même année que Janin. Sur les gardes on trouve une grande photographie prise à la Villa Médicis en 1910 réunissant tous les pensionnaires, avec les signatures de ces derniers et des annotations marginales faites par Castel en 1966 (ceux qui sont morts, ceux qui restent). Une autre grande photographie (pliée) montre la classe 1910 aux Beaux-Arts ; sur le dernier plat, grande photographie originale de F. Bianchi montrant un groupe d’élèves des Beaux-Arts en 1913.La planche 19 manque mais le volume est enrichi de nombreuses planches et documents divers. Plusieurs planches déreliées.
