‎Summary The Holy Trinity forms a cornerstone of Christian belief, and references to it abound in the liturgy. Every Psalm ends with the invocation of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost in the Doxology supplied as the final verse. But around the turn of the tenth century, clerics decided to devote the first Sunday after Pentecost to the veneration of the Trinity. They created a new liturgy for the day, and evidence suggests that Stephen, Bishop of Li ge (? 920) revised an earlier form of the Office into the version that saw wide dissemination in the Latin West from the end of the tenth century. The abbey of Saint Martial in Limoges exhibited considerable enthusiasm for the feast and its Office beginning in the early eleventh century. Its scriptorium prepared no fewer than five copies of the Office, including four fully neumed versions between ca. 1010 and 1050, including the earliest extant transcribable copy with music in the hand of Ad mar de Chabannes, musician, scribe, homilist and historian. This edition presents a critical text of the Office as it was practised at Saint Martial during the first half of the eleventh century, beginning with Ad mar's version, but also considering the other witnesses from the abbey. It includes full critical and explanatory commentary with an Introduction that discusses the role of Stephen of Li ge in the authorship of the Office, the witnesses from Saint Martial and their relationship to other early witnesses of the Office, and its musical and literary style. ‎Summary Christians have observed vigils in both East and West from earliest times. In the broad liturgical tradition of Christianity, the idea of keeping vigil appears to manifest the Church's eschatological nature. Documentary evidence from the earliest centuries reveals that some Christians kept a night watch at the graves of martyrs and other heroes of the faith as to anticipate that dawn when the rising Sun of Justice would return in fulfilment of his promise. Eventually, vigils appear not just for Easter, Pentecost and saints' days, but also for Christmas, the dedication of a church building, and on Saturday evening of the uniquely Roman quarterly Ember Weeks. Liturgical sources of the sixth, seventh, and eighth centuries reveal that such practices became relatively standardized with the assignment of specific Mass texts and scriptural readings, yet we know very little about the precise elements which comprised a vigil liturgy and of their theological significance. At the same time these vigils were so important that they attracted to themselves the celebration of major sacramental liturgies during them. Hence, the Paschal Vigil, which existed for centuries as a vigil liturgy of scriptural readings and prayers gradually became the setting for the annual baptismal celebration. This book examines the nature of Roman vigil liturgies in the early centuries of Christianity to unravel the most primitive structure of keeping vigil and to provide a better understanding of the Paschal Vigil, which Augustine of Hippo affirms as the 'mother of all vigils.'‎

‎About The Book : The belief that a selection of views from Gujarat and Rajputana would meet with public support, and help to spread a knowledge of the beauties of Indian Architecture and Scenery, has led the publishers to put forth the present volume of photographs, selected from a larger series taken by Mr. C. Murray, partner of the firm, during a tour in these provinces in the months of December 1872, January, February, and March 1873. I accompanied him, for the benefit of my health, through Ahmedabad, Pahlanpur, and the miserable remains of Chandravati, to Mount Abu, and thence through Sirohi to Sâdrî, by the Desuri Pass across the Aravali Hills, to Komalmer, Kailwa, Rajnagar, Nathdwara, Dilwâdâ, and Eklinga to Udaipur, and then to Chittur, where, leaving Mr. Murray to go by Bhainsrorgadh, Baroli, Kotâ, Bundi, Deoli, Rajmahal and Bisalpur to Ajmer, I went direct to Ajmer and Puskaren route for Jaypur and Agra. Instead of drawing entirely on my own notes for the materials of the letterpress, which would thereby have been more antiquarian in character, I have designedly drawn largely on the masterly criticisms of Mr. J. Fergusson in his Picturesque Illustrations of Ancient Architecture in Hindostan, and History of Architecture,-works of the highest interest to every student of the History of Oriental Architecture, and from which I have been kindly permitted to use some of the woodcuts. I have also availed myslf of the accounts of Tod, Heber, and Jacquemont, and the references appended to some of the articles will help the reader to fuller sources of information respecting many of the places noticed. I regret that these notes have been written so hurriedly, and without the care, I could have otherwise wished to bestow on a subject so interesting and attractive. The 1855 work was reissued ten years later in a much more extended form in three volumes, under the title of A History of Architecture in all Countries from the Earliest Times to the Present Day. The chapters on Indian architecture, which had been considered at rather disproportionate length in the Handbook, were removed from the general History, and the whole of this subject treated more fully in a separate volume, The History of Indian and Eastern Architecture, which appeared in 1876, as the fourth volume to The History of Architecture. The 1876 work was later revised with additions by James Burgess and Richard Phené Spiers in 1910 and published in two volumes The Title 'History of Indian and Eastern Architecture written/authored/edited by James Fergusson', published in the year 2022. ‎About The Book : Text to Accompany the Folio Volume of Plates; When the paper which forms the principal part of this volume was read to the Royal Asiatic Society, it was not my intention to publish illustrations of the Rock-cut Temples apart from the other buildings of the same age and style. I, at that time, proposed to bring out, in a series of about one hundred plates, a complete set of illustrations of the Buddhist, Hindoo, and Mahomedan styles, including not only those cut in the rock, but also the structural buildings, from the earliest date to the present day. About The Author : James Fergusson FRS (1808 –1886) was a Scottish-born architectural historian, mainly remembered for his interest in Indian historical architecture and antiquities. He was an important figure in the 19th-century rediscovery of ancient India. He was originally a businessman, and though not formally trained as an architect, designed some buildings and decorative schemes. His observations on Indian architecture were first published in his book on The Rock-cut Temples of India, published in 1845. The task of analysing the historic and aesthetic relations of this type of ancient buildings led him further to undertake a historical and critical comparative survey of the whole subject of architecture in The Illustrated Handbook of Architecture, being a Concise and Popular Account of the different Styles of Architecture prevailing in all Ages and Countries, a work which first appeared in 1855 in two volumes. It was followed in 1862 by one entitled A History of the Modern Styles of Architecture, being a sequel to the Handbook of Architecture. Fergusson died in London on 9 January 1886 and is buried with his father on the west side of Highgate Cemetery.‎
